The prerequisites are calculus, some knowledge of ordinary differ…ential equations, and knowledge of computer programming using Fortran. Normally this should be half of a two semester course, the other semester covering numerical solution of linear systems, inversion of matrices and roots of polynomials. Neither semester should be a prerequisite for the other. This would prepare the student for advanced topics on numerical analysis such as partial differential equations. We are philosophically opposed to a one semester surveyor 'numerical methods' course which covers all of the above mentioned topics, plus perhaps others, in one semester. We believe the student in such a course does not learn enough about anyone topic to develop an appreciation for it. For reference Chapter I contains statements of results from other branches of mathematics needed for the numerical analysis. The instructor may have to review some of these results. Chapter 2 contains basic results about interpolation. We spend only about one week of a semester on interpolation and divide the remainder of the semester between quadrature and differential equations. Of all surgical interventions aiming at revascularisation of the myocardium the aorto…coronary bypass operation is the one which indoubtedly has earned its place in cardiac surgery. The most suitable candidates for this operation are those with a normal left ventricular angiogram and a good peripheral vascular pattern. Even in these people the question still remains whether the vein can stay patent for many years; moreover what happens to the proximal coronary arteries is as yet uncertain. In the case of poorly contracting ventricles little good is to be expected from the by pass operation. Possible, anastomosis of the internal mammary artery with a stenotic coronary artery merits preference over a venous bypass. To demonstrate the ultimate influence of this type of surgical intervention on life expectance and on a secondary pre vention of angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, Chalmers (1972) and Spodick (1971) favour follow-up studies of patients who are divided at random into a surgical and a non-surgical group. 1.1. OBJECT The object of this investigation is to establish on basis of the results and complications of saphenous vein bypass grafting (briefly termed bypass surgery): - reliable indications for this operation; - to provide the surgeon with a guide to the choice of surgical technique. 84 pp. Englisch.

Consequently, of all the major manifestations of solar activity only prominences are without a comprehensive and unified treatment in the current literature. The present book is written in an attempt to remedy this situation, and to furnish an account of some of the most spectacular and most beautiful aspects of solar activity. Our ultimate aim is an understanding of the physical processes involved. I hope that this book may provide if only a small step toward this goal. After an historical introduction and some general definitions Chapter I proceeds with an account of several classification schemes for prominences. Most of the observational material is presented in Chapter II and forms the basis on which different models of prominences are built in Chapter III. Chapters IV and V give most of the physics of prominences, treating, as they do, the formation and stability of these objects. The interaction of prominences with other manifestations of solar activity is the subject of Chapter VI, and the final Chapter VII considers prominences in the larger context: as an integral part of the corona. 176 pp. Englisch.

The in tent of the course was not only to introduce students to the more modern, state-space approach to multivariable control system analysis and design, as opposed to the classical, frequency domain approach, but also to draw analogies between the two approaches whenever and wherever possible. It is therefore felt that the material presented will have broader appeal to practicing engineers than a text devoted exclusively to the state-space approach. It was assumed that students taking the course had also taken, as a prerequisite, an undergraduate course in classical control theory and also were familiar with certain standard linear algebraic notions as well as the theory of ordinary differential equations, although a substantial effort was expended to make the material as self-contained as possible. In particular, Chapter 2 is employed to familiarize the reader with a good deal of the mathematical material employed through out the remainder of the text. Chapters 3 through 5 were drawn, in part, from a number of contemporary state-space and matrix algebraic references, as well as some recent research of the author, especially those portions which deal with polynomial matrices and the differential operator approach. 372 pp. Englisch.

Today's means of propaganda are books, newspapers, radio, movies, television, public schools, and lastly the rostrum. Molders of opinion believe that words, sounds, and pictures accomplish little unless they are carefully organized and inte grated into a well-conceived plan. Once this is accomplished, the ideas 1 conveyed by the words will become part of the people themselves. Special techniques, such as the employment of fear and the play on prejudices, have been used quite succesfully by modern states to impose their own dogmas and policies. Probably, the reader will find more than one gap in the…biblio graphy. The author would like to point out that in no case are such gaps due to the voluntary omission of any information, interpretations, or views. The gaps are due only to the difficulties met in trying to master such a vast literature consisting of so many contributions which have appeared over more than a century. An endeavour has been made to report not only the morphological data, but also, whenever possible, information derived from histochemical and biochemical studies. 11. Origin 01 the Spinal Ganglia Before 1868 it was generally thought (see, e.g., Remak, 1851; Bidder and Küpffer, 1857) that the spinal ganglia arise from the mesoblast of the protoverte brae (old term for somites). In 1868 His showed that the nerve cells of the spinal ganglia take their origin from the ectoderm, and more precisely from a thin band of ectoderm (Zwischenstrang, neural crest) flanking each side of the neural plate (Fig. 1 a) and interposed between it and the somatic ectoderm (Hornblatt). On this subject His (1879) wrote in a later paper ' . die spinalen Ganglien . aus einem schmalen Substanz streifen hervorgehen, welche zwischen der Medullarplatte und dem Hornblatte gelegen ist und dessen Material ich als Zwischenstrang bezeichnet habe'. 104 pp. Englisch.

Consequently, of all the major manifestations of solar activity only prominences are without a comprehensive and unified treatment in the current literature. The present book is written in an attempt to remedy this situation, and to furnish an account of some of the most spectacular and most beautiful aspects of solar activity. Our ultimate aim is an understanding of the physical processes involved. I hope that this book may provide if only a small step toward this goal. After an historical introduction and some general definitions Chapter I proceeds with an account of several classification schemes for prominences. Most of the observational material is presented in Chapter II and forms the basis on which different models of prominences are built in Chapter III. Chapters IV and V give most of the physics of prominences, treating, as they do, the formation and stability of these objects. The in tent of the course was not only to introduce students to the more modern, state-space approach to multivariable control system analysis and design, as opposed to the classical, frequency domain approach, but also to draw analogies between the two approaches whenever and wherever possible. It is therefore felt that the material presented will have broader appeal to practicing engineers than a text devoted exclusively to the state-space approach. It was assumed that students taking the course had also taken, as a prerequisite, an undergraduate course in classical control theory and also were familiar with certain standard linear algebraic notions as well as the theory of ordinary differential equations, although a substantial effort was expended to make the material as self-contained as possible. In particular, Chapter 2 is employed to familiarize the reader with a good deal of the mathematical material employed through out the remainder of the text.
