Neuware - Anthropological approaches to the sciences have developed as part of a broader tradition concerned about the place of the sciences in today's world and in some basic sense concerned with questions about the legitimacy of the sciences. In the years since the second World War, we have seen the emer…gence of a number of different attempts both to analyze and to cope with the successes of the sciences, their broad penetration into social life, and the sense of problem and crisis that they have projected. Among the of movements concerned about the earlier responses were the development social responsibility of scientists and technological practitioners. There is little doubt that this was a direct outgrowth of the role of science in the war epitomized by the successful construction and catastrophic use of the atomic bomb. The recognition of the deep social utility of science, and especially its role as an instrument of war, fostered curiosity about the earlier develop ment of scientific disciplines and institutional forms. The history of science as an explicit diSCipline with full-time practitioners can be seen as an attempt to locate science in temporal space - first in its intellectual form and second ly in its institutional or social form. The sociology of science, while certainly having roots in the pre-war work of Robert K.

In view of this, our initial task will consist in examining the origins of modern technology, which Heidegger descries in the primordial 'experience' of Bei…ng as cpvO'u;, together with the human manners of comportment to this the primordial manifestness of Being. We will begin in Part One by attending primarily, but not exclusively, to the subjective dimen sion, allowing thereby the manner of the historical 'progression' of Being, that is, its transforming self-showing, to stand in the background. This procedure seems to us not merely appropriate with respect to our purpose as a whole, but moreover cor responds to the matter at issue, for Being in its own progression is essentially self-concealing, which in turn brings to prominence the 'subjective' in union with the varied modes of the 'Being of beings', termed 'beingness'. In conformity with Heidegger's interpretation of 'Metaphysics', there can be but little doubt that Being itself persists throughout in presence only as absence. Thus, we will trace out this manner of Being's presence in absence and the respective dominating human manners of relatedness to Being's beingness, that is, we must observe the transformation of original vo6v (or I,SYElV, TSXV1J), into Platonic i6slV ( 'j6S!Y. ).

Viele Ärzte arbeiten nicht mit dem Begriff 'Refluxkrankheit' , sondern sehen des Problem einzig im Zusammenhang mit der Hiatushernie. Andere führen Refluxbeschwerden automatisch auf eine 'Gastritis' zurück. Dementsprechend herrschen auch über die therapeutischen Möglichkeiten Unklarheiten. Während die einen auto matisch beim Vorliegen einer Hiatushernie eine chirurgische Therapie anstreben, beginnen die anderen beim Vorliegen von 'Hyperaziditäts beschwerden' nicht einmal mit einer Diagnostik, sondern begnügen sich mit halbherzigen palliativen Maßnahmen. Es schien uns deshalb angezeigt, eine Gruppe von Sachkennern dieser Materie zusammenzurufen, eine Bestandsaufnahme vorzunehmen und therapeutische Richtlinien zu erarbeiten. Solche Bemühungen sind bedeutungsvoll, da die Refluxkrankheit bei ähnlicher Symptomatologie im einen Fall eine harmlose, fast zu vernachlässigende Störung dar stellt, im anderen Fall aber zu einer bedrohlichen Erkrankung fort schreiten und im schlimmsten Fall sogar der Schrittmacher eines malignen Tumors sein kann. 588 pp. Englisch.

THE EDITOR INTRODUCTION TO THE SE…COND IMPRESSION The articles included in this collection represent what may be called the standard modal approach to deontic logic (the logic of normative concepts), in which deontic logic is treated as a branch of modal logic, and the normative concepts of obligation, permission (permissibility) and prohibi tion are regarded as analogous to the 'alethic' modalities necessity, possi bility and impossibility. In his recent paper [16] Simo Knuuttila has shown that this approach can be traced back to late medieval philosophy. Several 14th century philosophers observed the analogies between deontic and alethic modalities and 4iscussed the deontic interpretations of various laws of modal logic. A relatively simple deontic system of this kind (called the system D or K D; cf. Lemmon and Scott [17], pp. 50-51, Chellas [10], p. 131) is obtained by adding to propositional logic two deontic axioms (or axiom schemata), (K) O(A :::J B) :::J (OA :::J OB) and (D) OA :::J ~ 0 ~ A, where '0' is the obligation operator, and the deontic variant of the 'rule of necessitation' (0) From A, to infer ~A. 204 pp. Englisch.

Die Reflux-Therapie erschien uns als interdisziplinäres Thema besonders geeignet. Mehr…noch als bei der Ulcus-Therapie ist die Grenzlinie zwischen konservativer und operativer Therapie verwaschen. Während bei der Ulcuskrankheit zumindestens gewisse Vorstellungen über die Definition des Krankheitsbildes und die Häufigkeit der Er krankungen bestehen, besteht hierüber - auch heute noch - bei der Refluxkrankheit Unklarheit. Viele Ärzte arbeiten nicht mit dem Begriff 'Refluxkrankheit' , sondern sehen des Problem einzig im Zusammenhang mit der Hiatushernie. Andere führen Refluxbeschwerden automatisch auf eine 'Gastritis' zurück. Dementsprechend herrschen auch über die therapeutischen Möglichkeiten Unklarheiten. Während die einen auto matisch beim Vorliegen einer Hiatushernie eine chirurgische Therapie anstreben, beginnen die anderen beim Vorliegen von 'Hyperaziditäts beschwerden' nicht einmal mit einer Diagnostik, sondern begnügen sich mit halbherzigen palliativen Maßnahmen. Es schien uns deshalb angezeigt, eine Gruppe von Sachkennern dieser Materie zusammenzurufen, eine Bestandsaufnahme vorzunehmen und therapeutische Richtlinien zu erarbeiten. Solche Bemühungen sind bedeutungsvoll, da die Refluxkrankheit bei ähnlicher Symptomatologie im einen Fall eine harmlose, fast zu vernachlässigende Störung dar stellt, im anderen Fall aber zu einer bedrohlichen Erkrankung fort schreiten und im schlimmsten Fall sogar der Schrittmacher eines malignen Tumors sein kann.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 588 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The existence of so many strangely puzzling, even contradictory, aspects of 'time' is due, I think, to the fact that we obtain our ideas about temporal succession from more than one source - from inner experience, on the one side, and…from the physical world on the other. 'Time' is thus a composite notion and as soon as we distinguish clearly between the ideas deriving from the different sources it becomes apparent that there is not just one time-concept but several. Perhaps they should be called variants, but in any case they need to be seen as distinct. In this book I shall aim at characteri sing what I believe to be the three most basic of them. These form a sort of hierarchy of increasing richness, but diminishing symmetry. Any adequate inquiry into 'time' is necessarily partly scientific and partly philosophical. This creates a difficulty since what may be elementary reading to scientists may not be so to philosophers, and vice versa. For this reason I have sought to present the book at a level which is less 'advanced' than that of a specialist monograph. Due to my own background there is an inevitable bias towards the scientific aspects oftime.
