Neuware - These Proceedings are from the Fifth Annual Meeting of the American Section of the International Society for Heart Research held at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, September 21-24, 1983. The program and abstracts were published in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, Vol. 15, Supplement 4, September 1983, Academic Press. This Symposium Proceedings consists of three sections. Section I deals with the mechanical factors and their i'nfluence on coronary blood flow in the normal and failing heart. Section II is developed around the area of vascular smooth muscle and the factors that may control it which ultimately play such an important role in the regulation of coronary blood flow. Section III is primarily devoted to the mechanical aspects of the function of the heart in both hypertrophy and failure including the molecular changes in the myocyte, alterations in neural control, and in inotropic responsiveness of the hypertrophied and failing heart. The editors hope that these three areas encompass a significant body of new and ongoing information that will be helpful to those who work in these areas as well as those who treat patients with varying degrees of myocardial failure or with compromised coronary circulations. The editors express their appreciation to all the contributors and to Ms. Jeri B. McClain for assisting in the organization and compiling of this volume. Francis L. Abel, M. D. , Ph. D. Walter H. Bleuler Institut fur Theoretische Kernphysik der Universitat Bonn NuBallee 14-16, D-5300 Bonn, West-Germany I. INTRODUCTION The recent, most impressive verification of the Salam -Weinberg theory of electro-weak interactions through the experimental discovery of the so-called inter mediate bosons represents, at the same time, a success of the general gauge theoretical viewpoints in modern particle physics (quantum chromodynamics, 0CD). This theory leads to a deeper and by far more natural inter pretation of particle interaction and induces, as we shall see, also a profound change in our understanding of nuclear structure.

During rapid growth phases within any field, it is desirable to reflect on the current 'state of the art'. It is difficult even for experts in reputed areas of advancement to distinguish true advances from false leads, but it is far more difficult yet for those whose expertise lies in other areas to evaluate important advances. Thus, an objective assessment of evolving areas of investigation in the form of a comprehensive review is of considerable value. we have attempted to provide the reader with an over In this volume, view of some of the current areas of investigation in urologic oncology by experts in each area. There often is a tendency for invited papers in books of this nature to lack important critical peer review and therefore, suffer from a lack of objectivity. We have attempted to diminish this problem by the selection of two experts to discuss each subject. We believe that this format has improved the overall quality of the book for two reasons: 1) the know ledge of each contributor that his or her work would be reviewed by a peer 2) the fact that contributions by encourages more rigorous scholarship, and two experts, including the individual insights of each, provides a better per spective for the reader.

As I sought my way in Buenos Aires, I visited Carlos Gianantonio whom I had met in Caracas the year before during the Pan American pediatric meetings. At that time he was actively working on HUS which had become an epidemic in Buenos Aires and other parts of Argentina. I was impressed by the team effort and devotion of his group to such heavy demands. They obviously were meeting the challenge at an amazingly high level under a very crippling physical situation with shortages of space, laboratories and equipment. His group together with Dr. Becu, at the time the pathologist at the Children's Hospital of Buenos Aires (we had met through his mother who was instrumental in arranging my return to Buenos Aires), wrote some of the classic papers on HUS. Through the years as Dr. Gianantonio became more involved in general pediatrics, the administrative aspects and its orientation in Latin America, he became known for his deep philosophical questions as to what we are doing and where we are going. His questions have obvious implications regarding an agressive approach to our pediatric nephrology patients.

Neuware - Responsibility for the diagnosis and management of disorders of the pulmonary circulation has become the shared domain of the pulmonologist, cardiologist, surgeon, radiologist, pathologist, and, perhaps most important of all, the internist. It is the general internist who is most likely to care for the majority of patients with lung diseases that secondarily give rise to pulmonary heart disease, and it is the internist who will first evaluate the patient with primary pulmonary hyperten sion or recurrent pulmonary thromboembolism who presents with nonspecific complaints and may manifest subtle and nondiagnostic findings on preliminary evaluation. The burgeoning medical literature concerning aspects of the pulmonary circula tion, both clinical and investigative, is a reflection of the reawakening of great interest in this field and has led to many new developments, both in our understand ing of cardiopulmonary pathophysiology and in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary vascular diseases. This book is an attempt to provide the clinician with a comprehensive overview of pulmonary heart disease from the perspective of experts representing a variety of disciplines. It is intended to be thorough yet clinically relevant. Individuals familiar with some facets of pulmonary heart disease may gain insight into other aspects of this condition, whereas those unfamiliar with this disorder may find this work useful as a general reference or as a resource to address a specific question.

This is reflected in the number of manufacturers now in volved in the field of robotics. Thanks to pioneers such as Joseph Engelberger of Unimation Inc, industry has seen their rapid deployment in all areas of manufacturing. Manufacturers of robots and robotic equipment have increased their production levels and at the same time have made great efforts to improve and adapt their pro ducts to allow them to be used for a wider range of appli cations. The demand for ever more sophisticated robotic devices has made the choice of robot for a particular application an extremely hard one. Industrial Robot Specifications has been compiled to enable users to assess robotics in the context of their own needs. The book contains detailed information on over 300 robots manufactured and distributed under licence throughout Europe. More than 90 companies are cov ered, and details are given of their distributors and agents, regional addresses and names of key contacts. Information is provided on robots as diverse as simple teaching machines, costing perhaps Pds. 1500, to those highly sophisticated computer-controlled robot devices commonly found in flexible manufacturing systems, costing tens of thousands of pounds each. Introduction Industrial Robot Specifications is divided into three sec adjustable mechanisms that command manipulation. 360 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A working knowledge of differential forms so strongly illuminates the calculus and its developments that it ought not be too long delayed in the curriculum. On the other hand, the systematic treatment of differential forms requires an apparatus of topology and algebra which is heavy for beginning undergraduates. Several texts on advanced calculus using differential forms have appeared in recent years. We may cite as representative of the variety of approaches the books of Fleming [2], (1) Nickerson-Spencer-Steenrod [3], and Spivak [6]. . Despite their accommodation to the innocence of their readers, these texts cannot lighten the burden of apparatus exactly because they offer a more or less full measure of the truth at some level of generality in a formally precise exposition. There. is consequently a gap between texts of this type and the traditional advanced calculus. Recently, on the occasion of offering a beginning course of advanced calculus, we undertook the expe- ment of attempting to present the technique of differential forms with minimal apparatus and very few prerequisites. These notes are the result of that experiment. Our exposition is intended to be heuristic and concrete. Roughly speaking, we take a differential form to be a multi-dimensional integrand, such a thing being subject to rules making change-of-variable calculations automatic. The domains of integration (manifolds) are explicitly given 'surfaces' in Euclidean space. The differentiation of forms (exterior (1) Numbers in brackets refer to the Bibliography at the end. 164 pp. Englisch.

They are mainly concerned with regularity theory for obstacle problems, and with the dam problem, which, in the rectangular case, is one of the most in teresting applications of Variational Inequalities with an obstacle. Very little background is needed to read these notes. The main re sults of functional analysis which are used here are recalled in the text. The goal of the two first chapters is to introduce the notion of Varia tional Inequality and give some applications from physical mathematics. The third chapter is concerned with a regularity theory for the obstacle problems. These problems have now invaded a large domain of applied mathematics including optimal control theory and mechanics, and a collec tion of regularity results available seems to be timely. Roughly speaking, for elliptic variational inequalities of second order we prove that the solution has as much regularity as the obstacle(s). We combine here the theory for one or two obstacles in a unified way, and one of our hopes is that the reader will enjoy the wide diversity of techniques used in this approach. The fourth chapter is concerned with the dam problem. This problem has been intensively studied during the past decade (see the books of Baiocchi-Capelo and Kinderlehrer-Stampacchia in the references). The relationship with Variational Inequalities has already been quoted above. 132 pp. Englisch.

The group consists educators. The main purpose of these meetings has been to provide scientists in this field with an informal and efficient channel for mutual discussion. Meetings have previously been held in the Federal Republic ofGermany, Czechoslo vakia, Israel, Belgium, Canada, and Sweden. This time, it was a great honor us to be entrusted with the organization ofthe Tenth Symposium ofPaediatric Work Physiolo gy. The congress took place in Joutsa, a small community in central Finland. It was our wish to bring the group together in the middle of the Finnish summer in a forest hotel by one of our thousands of lakes, providing a peaceful and stimulating atmos phere for discussions on recent research activities. The meeting was fInancially assisted by the Finnish Ministry ofEducation, the com munity of Joutsa, the Rantasipi Joutsenlampi Hotel, Joutsa, as well as Tunturipyorii, Turku, Finland. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to all the sponsors. We would like to thank all the participants for their valuable contributions. We believe that the papers presented will greatly enhance further understanding and re search in the work physiology of children and adolescents. 300 pp. Englisch.

Before reaching the doctor, the substance is examined by chemists, pharmacologists and pharmacists - just to mention a few of the most important stages in a whole research sequence. Before the drug is finally made available on the market, the findings resulting from animal experiments must be confirmed in clinical studies. The expectations involved in its development must be met, and sufficient evidence has to be established as to the drug's effects and side effects, indications and contraindications, and the questions of safe use and appropriate dosage. Only then may the drug be registered and introduced to the market. In this respect Metipranolol eye drops, which have recently been launched on the market, formed no exception and had likewise to go through all these various stages. A series of investigators at many different centers participated in this procedure, and at the invitation of the manufacturers, Messrs. Dr. Gerhard Mann, they assembled for discussions at a symposium held in Berlin in January 1983, and reported on the substance and their experiences with it. 188 pp. Englisch.
