'Australasian Studies in History and Philosophy of Science' aims to provide a distinctive publication outlet for Australian and New Zealand scholars working in the general area of history, philosophy and social studies of science. Each volume comprises a group of essays on a connected theme, edited by an Australian or a New Zealander with special expertise in that particular area. Papers address general issues, however, rather than local ones; parochial topics are avoided. Further more, though in each volume a majority of the contributors is from Australia or New Zealand, contributions from elsewhere are by no means ruled out. Quite the reverse, in fact -- they are actively encour aged wherever appropriate to the balance of the volume in question.

In the 60 years since adenosine was first shown to be a potent hypotensive agent, a considerable investment has been made by several pharmaceutical companies-including Abbott, Byk Gulden, Takeda, Warner-LambertlParke Davis, Boehringer Mann heim, Boehringer Ingelheim, Nelson/Whitby Research and CffiA Geigy-as well as John Daly's laboratory at the National Institutes of Health, to design new adenosine receptor ligands, and both agon ists and antagonists with the aim of developing new therapeutic entiities. Numerous research tools have derived from these efforts including: 2-chloroadenosine, R-PIA (~-phenylisopropyladeno sine; NECA (5' N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine); CV1808; CI936; PD 125,944; ~-benzyladenosine; PACPX; CPX; CPT; XAC; CGS 15943 and CGS 21680. Yet in the realm of therapeutics it was only in 1989 that adenosine itself was approved for human use in the treatment of supraventricular arrythmias.

Environmental contamination by DDT, Aldrin, Dieldrin, mercury, PCBs, organotins and many other sub stances are all part of the public consciousness and have led to widespread attention to this topic. Some… of the concerns have arisen because human health has been affected when contaminants have been consumed via the food chain-for instance in the case of 'Minimata disease' in Japan. In other cases, direct effects on other components of ecosystems have given cause for alarm. The toxic effects which any chemical can cause are a function of exposure and innate toxicity, i.e. of the ability to reach in sufficient quantity a site where a biological process can be disrupted and of the tendency to cause disruption when it gets there. The processes by which chemicals reach sites of toxic action are the subject of this book, and are a fundamental consideration in ecotoxi cology. When a chemical enters the environment e.g. via a spillage or in an effluent, it is potentially subject to a wide variety of processes which may eliminate it from the environment completely, modify it into a more or less harmful substance, or transfer it to another part of the environment. The processes involved are complex and highly variable, but it is essential to increase our understanding of them.

It is fitting and proper that a volume on European Neogene mammal chronology is produced at this time, to ensure that new interpretations of vertebrate evolution and chronology are based on the most accurate and current data. Vertebrate paleon tologists believe that the fossil record is the only secure data for measuring the actual course and tempo of vertebrate evolution. Knowledge of the fossil record must keep pace with advances in other areas of science so that inferences on vertebrate evolu tion are accurate and meaningful.

The symposium also commemorated the 150th anniversary of the founding of Pulkovo Observatory. The scientific pro…gram was presented in ten half-day sessions. Most sessions were held at the Pulkovskaya Hotel, but one session which highlighted Pulkovo's current programs was held at Pulkovo Observatory. The sessions were organized into general categories pertaining to the legacy of Pulkovo for inertial systems; current programs at Pulkovo Observatory; concepts, definitions and models; and the realization and comparision of reference frames. More than 140 scientific papers were presented, either orally or in poster form. Extensive use was made of electronic mail and computer-readable communications, and more than two-thirds of the authors made use of the opportunity to submit papers for formatting by the editors. The meeting was truly a symposium in the Greek sense of the word-a free-flowing exchange of ideas and opinions. The final two papers presented at the symposium by Wilkins and by Westerhout are presented at an eady stage in the published proceedings, in order to help focus the reader's attention on the concepts and problems explored in subsequent papers. The interest of mixing results from fields as different as neurobiology, physics (spin glass theory), mathematics (linear algebra, s…tatistics . ), computer science (software engineering, hardware architectures . ) or psychology has attracted a large number of researchers to the field. The perspective of dramatic improvements in many applications has lead important companies to launch new neural network programs and start-ups have mushroomed to address this new market. Throughout the world large programs are being set-up: in Japan the government has committed more than $18 million per year to its 20 year Human Frontier Science program; the DARPA and the US Navy have alloted more than $10 million per year each and other US government agencies are contributing to important but less ambitious programs. Neural networks are also a major research are in the supercomputing initiative. Europe has from the beginning taken an active part in funding major projects in the new field with BRAIN, BRA, ANNIE and PYGMALION (Esprit). Approximately $20 million has been invested to date since 1988 and new programs of nearly $30 million are being funded for the next 3 years. National projects in certain countries may globally double these amounts. Neural network conferences are attracting larger audiences than ever before. Prior to 1987 attendance never surpassed 300. We are glad to report that visibility of the workshop continues to expand and that virtual environment researchers and practitioners from allover the world are submitting papers. This year, 40 papers and case studies were submitted of which 20 were accepted. In addition, we are glad to see that the focus of the workshop is also expanding. We accepted 6 research papers on evaluation of virtual environments and there was a broad sampling of other topics. We would like to thank all those involved in organizing the symposium. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When the eyeball is indented in total darkness, within less than 200 mil liseconds an oval or quarter-moon shaped spot of light is perceived in the part of the visual field corresponding to the indented region of the retina. In the… seconds following, this phosphene extends across the whole visual field and alters in structure during further eyeball indentation. It is then seen as irregular large bright spots of light, finely structured moving light grains ('light nebula') and stationary bright stars. Regular geometrical patterns appear only when both eyes are indented simultaneously [1]. When the eyeball deformation is released, part of the retina again lights up for another one or two seconds and curved light lines are seen following the course of the larger retinal vessels (Fig. 1). In the following we will review the history of this phenomenon, which played an important role during the first 2200 years of vision theories and in the development of models to explain normal vision. 2. Pre-Socratic philosophers, Plato and Aristotle Alcmaeon of Croton (6-5th century B. C. ), who was a member of the Pythagoraean sect and one of the founders of Greek medicine, was the first to describe mechanical deformation of the eyeball leading to light sensa tions. According to Aristotle's pupil Theophrast of Eresos, Alcmaeon report ed that 'the eye obviously has fire within,for when the eye is struckfireflashes out' [2, p. 88]. 160 pp. Englisch.

Currently the subject is of great practical importance because the use of nitrogenous fertilizers has re…sulted in unacceptable levels of water pollution; also these fertilizers are becoming steadily less economic both in cash terms and in utilization of fossil fuels for their manufacture. The number of papers published and the frequency of national and international meetings to discuss research into nitrogen fixation have both increased steadily during the 1970s and 1980s. Specialist monographs and review papers are often too detailed to be of real use to undergraduates in biology or related areas such as agriculture and forestry, and even for graduates and research workers newly entering the field of nitrogen fixation. For people in these categories, the senior author wrote The Biology of Nitrogen-fixing Organisms published by McGraw Hill in 1979. This book has similar aims. It incorporates new findings that have not only resolved some of the uncertainties reported in that earlier text hut, more importantly, it reflects the influence on the subject of recent developments in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetic engineering and other biotechnologies. We have devoted more attention to quantitative aspects of the subject, but unfortunately the many practical difficulties for accurate field assessment of nitrogen fixation and its contribution to nitrogen cycles means that many assessments are either in contlict with each other or must be accepted as tentative. 268 pp. Englisch.
