Part II deals with the movement of labor productivity measures through time. The papers in this part of the book study productivity changes as uni variate time series and analyze some of the characteristics of the patterns displayed. The papers in Part III address the issues of measurement of capi tal, the relation of capital formation to productivity growth, and the rela tion of imported intermediate inputs to U.S. productivity performance.

Eight papers followed by eight com ments were delivered on the topic of 'Economics of Informa tion.' These papers and comments are published in this volume along with a brief introduction. This publication has been made possible by income from the Harry Schwager Fund. My colleagues in the Economics Department have been generous when called upon to read and evaluate the papers. Professor Morris Silver, chairman of the department, was helpful at each stage of the project. Bob Leiter, my colleague and joint editor of these papers, died on August 19, 1976, while we were in the process of editing this volume. He was instrumental in organizing the Economics Department's annual conferences from their beginning in 1973 and for editing or jointly editing the con ference volumes. The Economics Department's Memorial Resolution, which follows, best expresses our sense of loss at his premature death.

The latter is a very stringent requirement. The oral and other physiological environments are designed by nature to break down many organic substances. Also of importance is the requirement that materials used in the prosthesis not have a deleterious effect on body tissues. Most foreign (to the body) substances are somewhat toxic to human tissues; in fact, few factors are more limiting in the medical prosthesis field than the biocompatibility problem. Some of these problems and the attempts to solve them are discussed in this volume.

Much interest has been focused on this group of animals in general and on the rhesus monkey in particular because of its close phylo genetic relationship with man. In some fields of research, however, such as embryology and microscopic anatomy, much less attention has been paid to nonhuman primates, probably because of the expense involved in the collection of the extensive material needed. On the other hand, teratological and experimental embryologic studies must be based upon a thorough knowledge of the normal ontogenesis since only in that way can a reliable distinction be made between normal and abnormal or induced develop ment. Each ontogenetic study essentially consists of a comparison of different deve lopmental stages. In most reports dealing with the development of individual organs or their subunits the material used is classified according to the estimated age or the length of the embryos. These criteria, however, are not valid, since considerable varia tion in developmental stage occurs between animals of the same age even between littermates and between animals of the same length. Therefore a method is needed for assigning embryos to successive developmental stages that are defmed on the basis of extemal and internal characteristics.
