On the one hand I had the great advantage of having found the first rough draft of the manuscript La Religion du Chretien, corrected and often recorrected. Authorship could eventually be established beyond shadow of doub…t, and in the corrections one could see de Vallone changing his opinions as he wrote. On the other the sheer length of the manuscript - about 140,000 words - plus the num ber of corrections - well over 3,000, many of them lengthy - the enormous number of references in the text to the Classics, to the Scriptures and Apochrypha, to the Fathers, to Philosophers, ancient and contemporary or near contemporary to de Vallone, and to a considerable number of other contem porary authors, all of which would require a footnote (not to speak of other footnotes necessary as comments on the text itself) made the production of a critical edition a financial impossibility. Instead I decided, for the sake of scholars interested in this type of manuscript, to give a full, i. ndeed meticulous perhaps too meticulous - digest of the manuscript with a running commentary, showing the influences working on de Vallone, the intellectual atmosphere in which he lived, indicating the significance of all the major revisions and correc tions in his text and commenting on what one can only describe as his own world-theory and on his use of his authorities and of their influence upon him.

Periodicity is an extremely important concept in our field, therefore, it should not be unexpected that our NATO Advanced Study Institute is enjoying a period of three years. Since 1972 we conducted four Institutes with increasing interest and en thusiasm displayed by the participants, lecturers and by this Director. Celestial Mechanics or Dynamical Astronomy is part of Astronomy dealing mostly with the motion of natural celestial bodies. Astrodynamics or Orbital Mechanics is the application of dynamics to problems of Space Engineering and it treats mostly the dynamical behavior of artificial satellites and space probes. The underlying mathematical and dynamical principles are, of course, the same for Celestial Mechanics and for Astrodynamics. This Director of the Institute and Editor of the Proceedings was extremely fortunate to have obtained the cooperation of out standing lecturers who were clear, thorough, understandable, patient to answer questions, but above all, had knowledge of the ix V. Over forty years ago on April 15, 1938 the first Symposium on Lattice Theory was held in Charlottesville, U.S.A. in conjunction with a meeting of the American Mathematical Society. The principal addresses on that occasion were Lattices and their applications by G. Birkhoff, On the application of structure theory to groups by O. Ore, and The representation of Boolean algebras by M. H. Stone. The texts of these addresses and three others by R. Baer, H. M. MacNeille, and K. Menger appear in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, Volume 44, 1938. In those days the theory of ordered sets, and especially lattice theory was described as a 'vigorous and promising younger brother of group theory.' Some early workers hoped that lattice theoretic methods would lead to solutions of important problems in group theory.

Materials of interest in the…se fields range through single-component to multi-component sys tems, the latter often being very complex. While many industrially im portant systems can be represented adequately by binary equilibrium diagrams, ternary diagrams provide a basis for studying a wide range of the more complex systems, such as are encountered in certain industrial alloys, and in slags and ceramics. A number of texts dealing with ternary systems are already available (see for example references 2-8). Some of these are very comprehensive and include many diagrams, and their use will take the student of the sub ject to an advanced and detailed level of understanding. The present mono graph is intended primarily as an introductory text, which it is hoped will prove useful for undergraduate and postgraduate students of metallurgy and ceramics, in particular. Special attention is given to the requirement of the metallurgist and ceramist to use phase diagrams as a means of under standing phase changes that occur during heating and cooling, as in solidi fication and heat treatment of alloys. This aspect is emphasized in terms of the principles of solidification reactions in relation to solid state constitu tion, particularly making use of liquidus and solidus projections. 160 pp. Englisch.

While many industrially im portant systems can be represented adequately by binary equilibrium diagrams, ternary diagrams provide a basis for studying a wide range of the more complex systems, such as are encountered in certain industrial alloys, and in slags and ceramics. A number of texts dealing with ternary systems are already available (see for example references 2-8). Some of these are very comprehensive and include many diagrams, and their use will take the student of the sub ject to an advanced and detailed level of understanding. The present mono graph is intended primarily as an introductory text, which it is hoped will prove useful for undergraduate and postgraduate students of metallurgy and ceramics, in particular. Special attention is given to the requirement of the metallurgist and ceramist to use phase diagrams as a means of under standing phase changes that occur during heating and cooling, as in solidi fication and heat treatment of alloys. Neuware -The aim of this investigation is threefold: (a) to determine the time of origin of neurons of the rat cranial nerve ganglia; (b) to reexamine the embryonic development of the cranial nerve ganglia in the light ofthese dating results; a…nd (c) to attempt to relate the chronology of these peripheral events to developmental events in those nuclei of the medulla that are intimately associated with the cranial nerve ganglia. Although thymidine-radiography has been used for over 2 decades to investigate the time of origin of neurons, most of these studies dealt with central nervous struc tures. There are relatively few studies available concerning the birth dates of neurons in the peripheral nervous system. In fact, to our knowledge, there is only a single thymidine-radiographic report available dealing with the time of origin of neurons of a cranial nerve ganglion in a mammal; this is the recent study by Forbes and Welt (1981) of neurogenesis in the trigeminal ganglion of the rat. In the present study we determined the birth dates of neurons of the trigeminal, facial, vestibular, 'glosso pharyngeal, and vagal ganglia of the rat. We utilized the progressively delayed com prehensive labeling procedure, a method which, in contrast to the single-pulse labeling procedure, allows the exact quantification of the proportion of neurons formed on a particular day.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 104 pp. Englisch.
