The course was directed to graduate students in the Division of Biological Sciences w…ith interests in population biology and neurobiology. Only a slight acquaintance with probability and differential equations is required of the reader. Exercises are interwoven with the text to encourage the reader to play a more active role and thus facilitate his digestion of the material. One aim of these notes is to provide a heuristic approach, using as little mathematics as possible, to certain aspects of the theory of stochastic processes that are being increasingly employed in some of the population biol ogy and neurobiology literature. While the subject may be classical, the nov elty here lies in the approach and point of view, particularly in the applica tions such as the approach to the neuronal firing problem and its related dif fusion approximations. Up to that date, numerous studies had been published on the functional analysis of the human…placenta. One shortcom ing common to all these studies, however, was the fact, that the human placenta was not absolutely suitable for morphological research, owing to fIxation difficulties, and for experimental investigations virtually unsuitable. Since other hemochorial villous placentae, like that of the anthropoid apes (primates) were practically unobtainable, a possible alternative was sought among the I;tcunal placentae. The numerous studies on the guinea-pig placenta undertaken at the turn of the century favoured the choice of this organ as it also belonged to the discoidal hemochorial type, like that of man. The fact that its structure was not villous but lacunal and therefore showed a different cir culation seemed even advantageous in this case. The lacunal system facilitates differen tiation in morphologically distinct areas, which allow independent functional analysis. The morphological and histochemical studies made during the past decade by Enders (1965), Vollrath (1965), Miiller and Fischer (1968), Kaufmann (1969a), Davidoff and Schiebler (1970a, b), King and Enders (1970b, 1971), Davidoff and Gospodinoff (1971), Davidoff (1973), Kaufmann (1974) have led to the discovery of a large amount of new information on this organ, thus rendering it one of the most precisely examined placentae so far. 100 pp. Englisch.

The book…is not intended, however, to arouse public concern. It has been known for some time that each therapeutic measure has a risk-benefit ratio, the estimation of which requires an understanding of carcinogenic side-effects. The number of iatrogenic tumors published so far is not large; however, we assume that there are a number of cases that have not been registered. In the past it was not generally recognized that medical treatment might involve carcinogenic risks; moreover, various therapeutic measures are often used simultaneously so that it may be difficult to trace the cause of tumor formation to a specific agent. Animal experiments and clinical observations during the past few years have contributed to our knowledge of the possible hazards of drugs. We have compiled the most important literature on the subject without, however, attempting completion. The present book may help the pharmacotherapist balance the benefit of a drug against its potential risk, and is thus consistent with the medical principle of nil nocere. We thank Mrs. M. Almost all the students were either undergraduates in mathematics or graduate students in the biologica…l sciences. The only prerequisites were calculus and matrices. As is done in these notes, biological background and additional mathematical techniques were covered when they were required. I have included the relevant problems assigned in the course. My aim in these notes is to formulate the various models fairly generally, making the biological assumptions quite explicit, and to perform the analyses relatively rigorously. I hope the choice and treatment of topics will enable the reader to understand and evaluate detailed analyses of specific models and applications in the literature. No attempt has been made to review the literature or to assign credit. Most of the references are to papers directly germane to the subjects and approaches covered here. Almost all the students were either undergraduates in mathematics or graduate students in the biolo…gical sciences. The only prerequisites were calculus and matrices. As is done in these notes, biological background and additional mathematical techniques were covered when they were required. I have included the relevant problems assigned in the course. My aim in these notes is to formulate the various models fairly generally, making the biological assumptions quite explicit, and to perform the analyses relatively rigorously. I hope the choice and treatment of topics will enable the reader to understand and evaluate detailed analyses of specific models and applications in the literature. No attempt has been made to review the literature or to assign credit. Most of the references are to papers directly germane to the subjects and approaches covered here. While leukemias are already being 'phenotyped' routinely in clinical centers, continued research o…n the developmental sta ge of cells and cell membranes, expanding into a malignant clone, permits new snap shots on hemopoietic differentiation. Thus the discovery of leukemia-associated anti gens, which so far have not been found on subpopulations of normal cells, has greatly stimulated the discussion on 'differentiation antigens versus tumor antigens'. The proceedings reflect the considerable success which has been achieved very re cently in the classification of hemoblastomas. Consequently the number of leukemias which are unclassifiable by immunological methods have dwindled down to a small mi nority. New facts give rise to new questions. By including the main points of the discussions in the proceedings, we wanted to give the reader an opportunity to get an impression of the questions and conclusions raised and drawn by the participants on the basis of new - and frequently still unpublished - data. It is concise, clear, and - in Findlay's words - 'amazingly rich in ideas. 'l It is therefore… a paradigm of what some contemporary philosophers approvingly call 'analytic philosophy. ' But Twardowski's book is also of considerable historical significance. His views reflect Brentano's ear lier position and thus shed some light on this stage of Brentano's philo sophy. Furthermore, they form a link between this stage, on the one hand, and those two grandiose attempts to propagate rationalism in an age of science, on the other hand, which are known as Meinong's theory of entities and HusserI's phenomenology. Twardowski's views thus point to the future and introduce many of the problems which, through the influence of Meinong, HusserI, Russell, and Moore, have become standard fare in contemporary philosophy. In this introduc tion, I shall call attention to the close connection between some of Twardowski's main ideas and the corresponding thoughts of these four philosophers. 1. IDEAS AND THEIR INTENTIONS Twardowski's main contention is clear. He claims that we must dis tinguish between the act, the content, and the object of a presentation. Goheen's course on Dewey in the Spring of 1968 at Stanford University where I was a second-year graduate student. The paper went unchanged into my thesis 'Four Studies in Phenomenology and Pragmatism,' which I eventually submitted in 1971, and it is here reprinted with no alteration except for the title. A first version of the two essays on Sartre was written in the Spring of 1969 during my first year of teaching at Princeton University. Even tually I decided to break the essay into two parts. Dies ist der Fall bei Messungen an realen Systemen oder bei der Auswertung von umfangreichen System simulationen (s. auch Anhang). Gesucht ist dann eine analytische Funk tion, die diese Werte mit einer vorgeschriebenen Genauigkeit einhalt, den Bedingungen fUr eine Wahrscheinlichkeits- Verteilungsfunktion ge nUgt und auBerdem fUr eine verkehrstheoretische Analyse geeignet ist. Aus der Sicht der Verkehrstheorie solI ten Aussagen Uber gemessene An kunftsabstande, Bedienungs- oder Transportzeiten sich nicht nur auf den Verlauf der VFn, sondern auch auf die Werte der Momente niedriger Ordnung erstrecken. Diese Forderung beruht auf der folgenden Beob achtung: 1) In vielen Bedienungssystemen sind wichtige charakteristische GraBen (mittlere Wartezeiten, Belastungen, Verluste, etc.) ausschlieBlich oder hauptsachlich von bestimmten (meist niedri gen) Momenten der VF von Ankunftsabstanden oder Bedienungs zeiten abhangig. So ist z.B. die mittlere Wartezeit im System M/G/1 nur abhangig vom ersten und zweiten Moment der Bedienungs zeitverteilung. 2) Auf der anderen Seite gibt es aber auch hinreichend viele FaIle, in denen charakteristische GraBen erst durch die Angabe der voll standigen VF von Ankunftsabstanden oder Bedienungszeiten festge legt sind.
