Complimentary to this purpose is the opportunity the Seminar structure gives me to invite those… particularly interested in the subject chosen to come together, share experiences and ideas in an unhurried, unpressured atmosphere for four con tinuous days - an oasis for me and, I am told, also for the faculty and registrants. This year's subject choice is an expression of my perennial interest in the kidney of the newborn. A step back to view the steps forward reveals unwittingly intertwined associations and actions which now fall into focus. When I was just beginning my pediatric nephrology training with Sol Kaplan at Downstate in Brooklyn, we discussed Bob Usher's pioneering thought that there was something wrong with the kidneys of babies with RDS. Without really knowing what needed to be done, I started looking at the kidneys of those babies. Subsequently, Dick Day who was Chairman of the Department of Pedia trics there, stopped me in the hall, and asked me to come into his office. Glowing in quiet introspection, he extolled the joy of working with one's hands, then hurried away to his laboratory. He had been the Director of the Newborn Nursery at Babies Hospital before coming to Downstate, and (as I later found out) was trying to do something with oxygen electrodes.

This volume presents 20 carefully selected papers that were pre sented at the International Symposium on Semi-Infinite Programming and Applications, The University of Texas at Austin, September 8-10, 1981. A total of 70 papers were presented by distinguished participants from 15 countries. This was only the second international meeting on this topic, the first taking place in Bad Honnef,Federal Republic of Germany in 1978. A proceedings of that conference was organized and edited by Rainer Hettich of the University of Trier and published by Springer Verlag in 1979. The papers in this volume could have been published in any of several refereed journals. It is also probable that the authors of these papers would normally not have met at the same professional society meeting. Having these papers appear under one cover is thus something of a new phenomenon and provides an indication of both the unification and cross-fertilization opportunities that have emerged in this field. Its aim was to provide a practical pocket-sized guide on diagnosis, investigation, and general m…anagement of some of the more common medical problems. The success of the original book in Dr Mitchell's unit lead to its introduction in other units and hospitals and through the help of Johnson and Johnson to junior hospital doctors throughout South Africa. We (PNP and CW) have taken Dr Mitchell's original book and have attempted to modify it to the needs of medicine in Britian. The basic concept of the book remains the same, i.e. to provide a practical pocket reference guide for final year medical students through to registrars. Within the limits imposed by a pocket book it is obviously impossible to be comprehensive. We have attempted to cover common problems, but have also covered some less common cionditions we considered important, or where we felt rapid referrence was not readily available. The views presented represent an up-to date consensus of thinking, which we have had to present in a rather dogmatic form due to the constraints of space. We have given details of drug doses in the book but have assumed that the British National Formulary will be readily available for reference on drug side-effects and interactions. We would like to acknowledge the help and advice of many colleagues in the Newcastle area hospitals. 192 pp. Englisch.

It set out to present a simple, concise and reasonably comprehensive introduction to some of the theoretical and…empirical criteria which may be used to define rock as a structural material. The objectives - reinforced by the change in title - remain the same, but the approach has been changed considerably and only one or two sections have been retained from the first edition. The particular aim in this edition is to provide a description of the mechanical behaviour of rocks, based firmly upon experimental data, which can be used to explain how rocks deform, fracture and yield, and to show how this knowledge can be used in design. The major emphasis is on the behaviour of rocks as materials, although in the later chapters the behaviour of discontinuities in rocks, and the way in which this can affect the behaviour of rock masses, is considered. If this edition is an improvement on the first edition it reflects the debt lowe to numerous people who have attempted to explain the rudiments of the subject to me. The basic concept of the book remains the same, i.e. to provide a practical pocket reference guide for final year medical students through to registrars. Within the limits imposed by a pocket book it is obviously impossible to be comprehensive. We have attempted to cover common problems, but have also covered some less common cionditions we considered important, or where we felt rapid referrence was not readily available. The views presented represent an up-to date consensus of thinking, which we have had to present in a rather dogmatic form due to the constraints of space. We have given details of drug doses in the book but have assumed that the British National Formulary will be readily available for reference on drug side-effects and interactions. The subject matter has now been studied with changing points of emphasis for over a hundred years, the most rece…nt developments being connected with the theory of 3-manifolds: see, for example, the papers of Poincare [77] and Thurston [101]. About 1940, the now well-known (but virtually unobtainable) Fenchel-Nielsen manuscript appeared. Sadly, the manuscript never appeared in print, and this more modest text attempts to display at least some of the beautiful geo metrical ideas to be found in that manuscript, as well as some more recent material. The text has been written with the conviction that geometrical explana tions are essential for a full understanding of the material and that however simple a matrix proof might seem, a geometric proof is almost certainly more profitable. Further, wherever possible, results should be stated in a form that is invariant under conjugation, thus making the intrinsic nature of the result more apparent. Despite the fact that the subject matter is concerned with groups of isometries of hyperbolic geometry, many publications rely on Euclidean estimates and geometry. However, the recent developments have again emphasized the need for hyperbolic geometry, and I have included a comprehensive chapter on analytical (not axiomatic) hyperbolic geometry. It is hoped that this chapter will serve as a 'dictionary' offormulae in plane hyperbolic geometry and as such will be of interest and use in its own right. 356 pp. Englisch.

Originally these papers were pre sented at the Fifth International Wrocfaw Symposium on Electromagnet…ic Compatibility. At that time, the symposium organizers selected a few persons of recognized authority and invited them to organize special sessions. Session organizers were given a free hand in the choice of topics and speakers. As a result, several impressive papers originated and a number of interesting people came to Wroclaw to discuss the recent results of their research. Professor Hiroshi Kikuchi from the Nihon University (J apan) was among them, serving as one of the most effective invited session chairmen/organizers at the symposium. The papers presented here were read at Prof. Kikuchi's session. At the symposium they received considerable attention not only because of the fascinating personalities and temperaments of the authors, but mainly because of the timeliness and soundness of their content. Their topic links both scientific and engineering fields in making attempts to resolve these kinds of specific hybrid problems. The problems discussed appear to be of interest not only to the EMC\* community but also to a broader forum of persons interested in the areas of electrical and space science, and engineering in general.
