Neuware - The Chilton Conference on Inositol and Phosphoinositides, held on January 9-11, 1984 at Southwestern Medical School, University of Texas Health Science Center, Dallas, Texas, was the third in a series of conferences on cyclitols and phosphoinositides. The first took place in 1968 in New York [Ann…. New York Acad. Sci. (1969), 765,508-819] and the second was held in 1977 in East Lansing, Michigan [eyclitols and Phosphoinositides, Wells, W. W. and Eisenberg, F. , eds. , (1978) Academic press, New York, pp. 1-607. ] In the interim since the previous conference, not only has the pace of research in the field accelerated markedly, but the physiological importance of phosphoinositide metabolism has become apparent to an increasing number of investigators from diverse fields in the life sciences. Thus it seemed to us timely for both recent and established workers in this area, as well as others whose interests impinged on it, to meet in order to disseminate new information, to review, and perhaps arrive at, a consensus of our current understanding of the role of inositol and phosphoinositides, and to establish new directions for research for the next few years. The expansion of the field since the last meeting made it mandatory to restrict the scope of the topics covered at the conference, primarily to aspects dealing with mammalian systems. We sincerely regretted the exclusion of recent research on cyclitols and phosphoinositides in microbes and plants and hope that these areas will be included in future conferences.

The term can refer to a process or to the damage caused by such a process. According to this general definition, material…s other than metals, such as ceramics, plastics or concrete, may also be subject to corrosion (or corrode). When no particular reference is made to the material, however, it is normally understood that a metal is being attacked. It is entirely in this limited sense that the term is used in this book. There are good reasons for treating the corrosion of metals separately, apart from deterioration or decay of other materials. Since metals have a high electric conductivity, their corrosion is usually of an electrochemical nature. The chemical deterioration of electrically non-conducting ma terials, such as plastics and ceramics, is governed by other physico-chemical principles. It is necessary to devote more attention to metallic corrosion nowadays than earlier, due to 1. An increased use of metals within all fields of technology. 2. The use for special applications, e.g. within the atomic energy field, of rare and expensive metals, whose preservation requires particular precautions. 3. A more corrosive environment due to the increasing pollution of air and water. 4. These seminars will be devoted to interdisciplinary topics related to the v…ast variety of DFVLR activities in the fields of fluid mechanics, flight mechanics, guidance and control, materials and struc tures, non-nuclear energetics, communication technology, and remote sensing. The purpose of the series is twofold, namely, to bring modern ideas and techniques to the attention of the DFVLR in order to stimulate internal activi ties, and secondly, to promulgate DFVLR achievements wi thin the international scientific/technical community. To this end, prominent speakers from Germany and other countries will be invited to join in a series of lectures and discussions on certain topics of mutual interest. The first colloquium of this series dealt with the dynamics of nonlinear systems, especially in relation'to its application to fluid mechanics, particularly in transcritical flows. Of special interest are questions concerning the formation of nonlinear three-dimensional structures in classical fluid mechanical stability problems, the physical process of transition to turbulence, and the appearance of chaotic solutions. The scope of lectures reaches from self-organization in physical systems to structural stability of three-dimensional vortex patterns, the treatment of dissipative and conservative systems, the formation of nonlinear structures in the region of laminar-turbulent transition, and numerical simulation of cumulus cloud convection in meteorology. The seminar should provide an insight into the extent to which theoretical findings in Non linear Dynamics apply to the comprehension of fluid-mechanical problems. 208 pp. Englisch.

To investigate this proposition we developed an Anesthesia Information System (AIS) with a touch-sensitive monitor as the hardware-user interface. Basic data input and system control techniques were defined and implemented. Record keeping is integrated into the user interface. It be…gins with a study of the ways in which Hegel attempted to evolve a genuinely Christian humanism by his demonstration that the modern understanding of man as a free and rational subject derived its strength and validity from the union of God and human existence in the incarnation. The rest of this study is con cerned with two different forms of opposition to Hegel: first, the criti cal discipleship of the Young Hegelians and Moses Hess, who insisted that Hegel's notion of Christian humanism was false because religious belief was necessarily inimical to a clear consciousness of social evil and the determination to abolish it; second, the religious opposition to the Enlightenment in the thought of Schelling and Kierkegaard, which emphasized God's transcendence to human reason and the insig nificance of secular history. In the years leading up to the revolution of 1848, Hegel's synthesis was rejected in favour of the assertion of atheistic humanism or religious otherworldliness. Chapter One, after discussing the young Hegel's critique of the social and political effects of Christianity, examines the union of religi ous belief, speculative philosophy and the rational state in Hegel's mature system. 326 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Chemical warfare between plants and their herbivores and pathogens was first brought to our attention by the publication 25 years ago of the paper by Fraenkel in Science. There, he pointed out that most plants have similar nutritional charact…eristics so that the selection of plants by insect herbivores must depend on the relative toxicity of secondary compounds. This led, rather gradually, to a host of papers on plant-herbivore interactions. More or less at the same time, insect physiologists and ecologists were starting to realise the importance of chemical communi cation systems in determining sexual and other characteristics of insect behaviour. Nine years ago the Phytochemical Society of North America published their Symposium on 'Biochemical Interaction Between Plants and Insects' in which the plant apparency theory was expounded by both Paul Feeny and Rex Cates and David Rhoades. This stated that plants which are apparent usually contain secondary components which reduce digestibility (tannins and lignins) while ephemeral plants have more toxic, and perhaps less costly, compounds such as alkaloids. These papers stimulated much research on biochemical ecology. The recognition of the importance of the biochemical factors in such interactions is not just of scientific interest.
