Three fields of inquiry come to mind: (1) Questions about the scientific status of psychopatho logical statements and claims, (2) ethical questions, and (3) problems…regarding the question of how to account for something like a disordered mind. While the first two domains have frequently been addressed in articles and debates (think of the mind-body problem and the problem of institutionalization versus self-determination as examples of issues in the two fields), the question of how the mind should be conceived in order for psychopathology to work best has seldom been discussed. The present volume focuses on this question. Perception, thought, affect, will, and the like are terms which made their way from philosophy into psychology, and into present psychiatry, where disturbances of these 'faculties' or 'functions' are believed to form the most basic part of symptomatology. While these terms and many others that are used to refer to symptoms of mental disorder (such as 'self', 'consciousness', 'drive', and 'identity') may seem to be purely descriptive and theoretically 'innocent', they are packed with implicit assumptions, theoretical concepts, and sometimes dogmatic postulates.

Dr. William White detailed the growing importance of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring to define hypertension and to determine the change in blood pressure due to pharmacologically active agents. Dr. Jay Cohn pointed out the flaws in using cuff blood pressure and detailed the potential virtues of using vascular compliance to identify patients requiring treatment for hypertension. Dr. Thomas Pickering also discussed the potential value of evaluating changes in left ventricular hypertrophy a finding which identifies high risk patients who need to be included in clinical trials. Dr. Michael Weber detailed the issues and suggested refinements in the approaches to clinical trial designs for antihypertensive agents and Dr. Raymond Lipicky discussed the definition of dose-duration and the role of non-Mem and Peak/Through measurements in defining an antihypertensive drug effect.

Put simply, we noticed that many VLSI design tools looked 'alike'. That is, at least at the overall software architecture level, the algorithms and data structures required to solve problem X lo…oked much like those required to solve problem X'. Unfortunately, this resemblance is often of little help in actually writing the software for problem X' given the software for problem X. In the VLSI CAD world, technology changes rapidly enough that design software must continually strive to keep up. And of course, VLSI design software, and engineering design software in general, is often exquisitely sensitive to some aspects of the domain (technology) in which it operates. Modest changes in functionality have an unfortunate tendency to require substantial (and time-consuming) internal software modifications. Now, observing that large engineering software systems are technology dependent is not particularly clever. However, we believe that our approach to xiv Preface dealing with this problem took an interesting new direction. We chose to investigate the extent to which automatic programming ideas cold be used to synthesize such software systems from high-level specifications. This book is one of the results of that effort.

During this stage of design, the objective is to define a general design plan, or approach, that is likely to result…in an efficient implementation satisfying the initial specifications, or to determine that the initial specifications are not realizable. A design plan is a collection of high level design decisions. As an example, the conceptual design of digital filters involves choosing the type of algorithm to implement (e. g. , finite impulse response or infinite impulse response), the type of polyno mial approximation (e. g. , Equiripple or Chebyshev), the fabrication technology (e. g. , CMOS or BiCMOS), and so on. Once a particu lar design plan is chosen, the detailed design phase can begin. It is during this phase that various synthesis, simulation, layout, and test activities occur to refine the conceptual design, gradually filling more detail until the design is finally realized. The principal advantage of VLSI System Planning is that the increasingly expensive resources of the detailed design process are more efficiently managed. Costly redesigns are minimized because the detailed design process is guided by a more credible, consistent, and correct design plan.

N. Kanfer and S. Hakomori in Volume 3 of this series. The major glycolipids i…n organisms of the plant kingdom, however, such as bacteria, yeasts and fungi, algae, and higher plants, are glycoglycerolipids, although glycosphingolipids are also present as minor components in these organisms, except for bacteria. It is of interest that one of the pioneers in glycosphingolipid research, Herbert E. Carter, also pioneered the discovery and structural elucidation of the plant galactosyldiacylglycerols. This class of glycolipids is present in chlo roplast membranes and must surely be one of the most ubiquitous and abun dant natural substances in the world, thereby deserving the attention of lipid biochemists. It is therefore surprising to learn that in contrast to the glycosphingolipids, which were discovered in the 1870s, glycoglycerolipids were not discovered until the 1950s. Since that time investigations of the structure and distribution of these glycolipids have proceeded at an exponen tially increasing rate, and much information is now available for representa tives of many genera of bacteria, yeasts, algae, and higher plants. Glycoglyce rolipids have also been identified in animal cells, particularly in the brain, testes, and sperm.

The medical - surgical armamentarium has evolved from being dependent solely upon the observations and conclusions of a skilled clinician to being constructed upon the systematic collection and evaluation of data by a team of skilled clinicians and their statistical colleagues: this is the controlled clinical trial. During the past two decades, the evaluation of clinical approaches to pre vention and therapy has become particularly important to clinicians concerned with nervous system dysfunction. There has been and continues to be an explosion of information from the basic neurosciences and from the applica tion of biotechnology to the nervous system.

Most such materials, however, would exhibit a marked and ductile inelasticity if the structure were overloaded…by accident or by some improbable but naturally occuring phenomeon. Indeed, the very presence of such ductility constitutes an important safety provision for large-scale constructions where human life is at risk. In the comprehensive evaluation of safety in structural design, it is therefore unrealistic not to consider the effects of ductility. This book sets out to show that the bringing together of the theory and methods of mathematical programming with the mathematical theory of plasticity furnishes a model which has a unifying theoretical nature and is entirely representative of observed structural behaviour. The contents of the book provide a review of the relevant aspects of mathematical programming and plasticity theory, together with a detailed presentation of the most interesting and potentially useful applications in both framed and continuum structures: ultimate strength and elastoplastic deformability; shakedown and practical upper bounds on deformation measures; evolutive dynamic response; large displacements and instability; stochastic and fuzzy programming for representing uncertainty in ultimate strength calculations. Besides providing a ready fund of computational algorithms, mathematical programming invests applications in mechanics with a refined mathematical formalism, rich in fundamental theorems, which often gives addi- tional insight into known results and occasionally lead to new ones. Three fields of inquiry come to mind: (1) Questions about the scientific status of psychopatho logical stat…ements and claims, (2) ethical questions, and (3) problems regarding the question of how to account for something like a disordered mind. While the first two domains have frequently been addressed in articles and debates (think of the mind-body problem and the problem of institutionalization versus self-determination as examples of issues in the two fields), the question of how the mind should be conceived in order for psychopathology to work best has seldom been discussed. The present volume focuses on this question. Perception, thought, affect, will, and the like are terms which made their way from philosophy into psychology, and into present psychiatry, where disturbances of these 'faculties' or 'functions' are believed to form the most basic part of symptomatology. The theory was originally developed by M. A. Savchenko in 1964 in response to the work of B. T. Matthias, the discoverer of superconductive compounds. Further de…velopment of the theory led to the prediction of the existence of high-temperature superconductors among magnetic and nonmagnetic compounds of rare-earth metals, ceramics, and polymers. In 1987 this prediction was experimentally verified by the discovery of high-Tc superconducting rare-earth metal oxides by I. Bednorz and K. Muller. To date, this is the only account that explains consistently all the available data. The theory of high-temperature superconductivity is based on the concept of an enhanced electron-phonon interaction which leads to an attraction between electrons forming superconducting pairs. This interaction is due to the exchange spin fluctu ations (exchange enhancement effect). In compounds in which there is no magnetic ordering except at very low temperatures, such as in rare-earth metal oxides, the electron-phonon interaction is strengthened due to fluctuations in the spins of the conducting electrons. If there is magnetic ordering in a superconductor at a tempera ture higher than or of the same order as the critical superconducting temperature Tc, then the attraction in the electron pairs will be further increased because the Coulomb repulsion is overwhelmed by fluctuations in the spins forming the long-range anti fer romagnetic order. 272 pp. Englisch.

The main methods used are those of homogeneous geometry and Lie theory together with some algebraic geometry of Riemann surfaces. Despite this, it is an area in which new and quite unexpected phenomena - such as the quantum Hall effect - are still being discovered, and in which many things are not yet fully understood. It forms an essential part of any undergraduate physics course. A number of textbooks on solid-state physics have appeared over the years and, because the subject has now grown so large, the books too have usually been large. By aiming at a more limited range of topics, I have tried in this book to cover them within a reasonably small compass. But I have also tried to avoid the phrase 'It can be shown that. . . ', as far as possible, and instead to explain to the reader just why things are the way they are; and sometimes this takes a little longer. The aim in this book is to try to focus on what is currently known, and what needs to be known, in order to explain plant development in terms that allow further experimentation at the cellular and molecular levels.
