Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This book is an extension of one author's doctoral thesis on the false path problem. The work was begun with the idea of systematizing the various solutions to the false path problem that had been proposed in the literature, with a view to determining the computational expense of each versus the…gain in accuracy. However, it became clear that some of the proposed approaches in the literature were wrong in that they under estimated the critical delay of some circuits under reasonable conditions. Further, some other approaches were vague and so of questionable accu racy. The focus of the research therefore shifted to establishing a theory (the viability theory) and algorithms which could be guaranteed correct, and then using this theory to justify (or not) existing approaches. Our quest was successful enough to justify presenting the full details in a book. After it was discovered that some existing approaches were wrong, it became apparent that the root of the difficulties lay in the attempts to balance computational efficiency and accuracy by separating the tempo ral and logical (or functional) behaviour of combinational circuits. This separation is the fruit of several unstated assumptions; first, that one can ignore the logical relationships of wires in a network when considering timing behaviour, and, second, that one can ignore timing considerations when attempting to discover the values of wires in a circuit.

Special emphasis is put on the way in which these properties influence the electrical characteristics and behaviour of thi…s important material. The results presented here were obtained in an ex tended European research cooperation in the framework of ESPRIT Project 369 'Physical-chemical characterization of silicon oxynitrides in relation to their electrical properties', which ran from 1984 to 1988. In this project two industrial laboratories (Philips Research Laborato ries in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and Matra Harris Semiconductors from Nantes, France) cooperated with various academic and government research laboratories (Harwell Laboratory in Great Britain, the Interuniversity Micro electronics Center (IMEC) in Leuven, Belgium, and the Faculty of Physics at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands). The latter partner acted as prime contractor for the project. General interest in silicon oxynitrides for applications in integrated circuit technology stems from the fact that proper choice of deposition conditions enables one to produce materials with properties which can be either oxide like or nitride-like. Of, course, in I.C. technology one would like to combine the good properties ofthe two materials, i.e. superior electrical properties of silicon oxide and good diffusion barrier behaviour of silicon nitride, to men tion only a few, without paying for such an operation by obtaining all the less desirable properties in such a mixed material. 172 pp. Englisch.

In retrospect, we realise that we missed a few research teams out, but nevertheless we did have a very fruit…ful workshop. This book is the outcome of that meeting. Prior to the workshop, teams submitted short position papers, and at the workshop made very short presentations of these. Most of the time was spent in four parallel sessions, and the reports of these sessions are given in Chapter 2. That full four-year period was characterized by substantial changes in the political and economic climate of…many countries in both hemispheres. Copper prices were relatively firm, and the advance and steady demand for nickel and ferrochromium stabilized important sectors of the mineral industry, certainly in Zimbabwe. The promise for gold remained unfulfilled, but the smaller, relatively flexible, mines survived and only the large, deep and low-value mines seem seriously at risk. None of this has affected the hungry, and intensive exploitations from surface to the water-table have revealed many targets of promise to those willing to take the risks. The pattern in Southern Africa was extraordinarily stable among the turmoil, with independence for Namibia, adjustments in South Africa and a gradual shift to market economies in the region. The pace of exploration has increased to recover some part of the progress that was lost in the Independence struggle, and atthe end of the first decade in Zimbabwe, for example, oil is being sought in the Zambesi Rift, following the investigation of the Luangwa in Zambia, and there are exciting exploration projects for methane released from coal, deep in its basins. 376 pp. Englisch.
