The purpose is to present the subject of polymer physics for undergraduate and graduate students, to focus the fundamental aspects of the subject and to show the link between expe…riments and theory. The intention is not to present a compilation of the currently available literature on the subject. Very few reference citations have thus been made. Each chapter has essentially the same structure: starling with an introduction, continuing with the actual subject, summarizing the chapter in 30D-500 words, and finally presenting problems and a list of relevant references for the reader. The solutions to the problems presented in Chapters 1-12 are given in Chapter 13. The theme of the book is essentially polymer science, with the exclusion of that part dealing directly with chemical reactions. The fundamentals in polymer science, including some basic polymer chemistry, are presented as an introduction in the first chapter. The next eight chapters deal with different phenomena (processes) and states of polymers. The last three chapters were written with the intention of making the reader think practically about polymer physics. The book is mostly self-contained. It sta…rts from basic principles and brings the readers to the current research level in these areas. It is developed with detailed proofs and illustrative examples for easy readability and self-study. Several exercises are proposed at the end of the chapters. The complicated topic of zonal polynomials is explained in detail in this book. The book concentrates on the theoretical developments in all the topics covered. Some applications are pointed out but no detailed application to any particular field is attempted. This book can be used as a textbook for a one-semester graduate course on quadratic and bilinear forms and/or on zonal polynomials. It is hoped that this book will be a valuable reference source for graduate students and research workers in the areas of mathematical statistics, quadratic and bilinear forms and their generalizations, zonal polynomials, invariant polynomials and related topics, and will benefit statisticians, mathematicians and other theoretical and applied scientists who use any of the above topics in their areas. Chapter 1 gives the preliminaries needed in later chapters, including some Jacobians of matrix transformations. It is not intended as a state-of-the-art handbook for researchers. We have tried to keep two types of reader in mi…nd: (1) mathematicians, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates in mathematics who want a concise introduction to a field which contains nontrivial interesting applications of mathematics (for example, weak convergence, convexity, and the theory of ordinary differential equations); (2) economists, applied scientists, and engineers who want to understand some of the mathematical foundations. of optimal control theory. In general, we have emphasized motivation and explanation, avoiding the 'definition-axiom-theorem-proof' approach. We make use of a large number of examples, especially one simple canonical example which we carry through the entire book. In proving theorems, we often just prove the simplest case, then state the more general results which can be proved. Many of the more difficult topics are discussed in the 'Notes' sections at the end of chapters and several major proofs are in the Appendices. We feel that a solid understanding of basic facts is best attained by at first avoiding excessive generality. We have not tried to give an exhaustive list of references, preferring to refer the reader to existing books or papers with extensive bibliographies. Sexual behavior in children represents, to far too many people, further proof of the moral decay of our society. Any issue that provokes as… strong an emotional reaction as childhood sexuality is obviously in need of a rational discussion. The best features of thought and reason include their moderating influence on overheated and reaction emotions. Consequently, this book by Betty Gordon and Carolyn Schroeder represents a very important, and even brave, counter to irrationality. When the Surgeon General of the United States is forced to resign because the words 'children' and 'masturbation' appear in the same sentence, you know that there is a great deal of misunderstanding about sexuality. My own evolution as a researcher in the area of child sexual abuse is a model of how naivete can be corrected by knowledge. Some of my early research in sexual abuse of children led me to realize that sexual behavior was a reliable marker of victimization in a relatively large percentage of children (Friedrich, Urquiza, & Beilke, 1986). My blinders to sexuality were evident in that I had not even hypothesized that to be the case in this early, exploratory research. When I realized how important sexual behavior was, several colleagues and I set out to interview parents and foster parents of sexually abused children more specifically.
