It is true that a good part of the en thusiasm has faded since then and given way to manifestations of disenchantment. During an intensive weekend in May 1996 a workshop on Gaussian scale-space theory was held in Copenhagen, which was attended by many of the leading experts in the field. The bulk of this book originates from this workshop. Presently there exist only two books on the subject. In contrast to Lindeberg's monograph (Lindeberg, 1994e) this book collects contributions from several scale space researchers, whereas it complements the book edited by ter Haar Romeny (Haar Romeny, 1994) on non-linear techniques by focusing on linear diffusion. This book is divided into four parts. The reader not so familiar with scale-space will find it instructive to first consider some potential applications described in Part 1. Parts II and III both address fundamental aspects of scale-space. Whereas scale is treated as an essentially arbitrary constant in the former, the latter em phasizes the deep structure, i.e. the structure that is revealed by varying scale. Finally, Part IV is devoted to non-linear extensions, notably non-linear diffusion techniques and morphological scale-spaces, and their relation to the linear case. Third, a new representation for designs called Virtual Interface, which allows for efficient topological specification and representation of hierarchical layouts, is outlined. The Virtual Interface representation binds all of the algorithms and their implementations for leaf and hierarchical compaction into an intuitive and easy-to-use system. HOLM 7102 Meadow Lane, Chevy Chase, MD 20815 The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) sponsored an Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) in Prague, Czech Republic, on 1-2 July 1996, to collect and study information on mobile alternative and supplemental demilitarization technologies and to report these fmdings. The mobile, or transportable, technologies identified for assessment at the workshop are alternatives to incineration technology for destruction of munitions, chemical warfare agent, and associated materials and debris. Although the discussion focused on the treatment of metal parts and explosive or energetic material, requirements for decontamination of other materials were discussed. The mobile alternative technologies are grouped into three categories based on process bulk operating temperature: low (0-200 C), medium (200-600 C), and high (600- 3,500 C). Reaction types considered include hydrolysis, biodegradation, electrochemical oxidation, gas-phase high-temperature reduction, stearn reforming, gasification, sulfur reactions, solvated electron chemistry, sodium reactions, supercritical water oxidation, wet air oxidation, and plasma torch technology. These categories represent a broad spectrum of processes, some of which have been studied only in the laboratory and some of which are in commercial use for destruction of hazardous and toxic wastes. Some technologies have been developed and used for specific commercial applications; however, in all cases, research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT &E) is necessary to assure that each technology application is effective for destroying chemical warfare materiel.

It investigates alternative circuit styles, as well as architectural alternatives, and gives quantitative results for comparison in realistic technologies. The circuits covered are the most important building blocks for many designs, so the text will be of direct use to designers. The recovery of stratospheric ozone is estimated to take time and ele vated levels of UV-B radiation are expected to occur throughout most of the next century. Despite numerous physiological studies of UV-B effects on plants, often grown in climate chambers, knowledge of UV-B effects on organisms and processes in natural aquatic or terrestrial ecosystems is poor. Currently it appears that UV-B radiation is not just an environmental stress' factor to plants. In various ways, which are incompletely understood, UV-B affects a wide range of physiological and ecological processes. Remarkably, recent field studies indicate that enhanced UV-B does not markedly affect photosynthesis, growth and primary production, but rather interferes with plant morphogenesis and plant and ecosystem functions relating to the secondary metabolism. This special issue and book UV-B and Biosphere is an attempt to cover this range and to report the progress made in the research of ecological effects of enhanced solar UV-B radiation. The papers in this book formed the basis of an international workshop entitled' UV-B and Biosphere' , December 15-18, 1995, in Wageningen, The Netherlands. This was the first meeting with this title and it was run under the auspices of the Universities of Huddersfield and Brighton, with sponsorship from the US Air Force (European Office of Aerospace Research and Development) and the London Math ematical Society. This enabled a very interesting and wide-ranging conference pro gramme to be offered. We sincerely thank all these organisations, USAF-EOARD, LMS, and Universities of Huddersfield and Brighton for their invaluable support. The conference organisers were John Mason (Huddersfield) and Steve Ellacott (Brighton), supported by a programme committee consisting of Nigel Allinson (UMIST), Norman Biggs (London School of Economics), Chris Bishop (Aston), David Lowe (Aston), Patrick Parks (Oxford), John Taylor (King's College, Lon don) and Kevin Warwick (Reading). The local organiser from Huddersfield was Ros Hawkins, who took responsibility for much of the administration with great efficiency and energy. Das Buch ist durchgehend gut gegliedert und vor allem ist es verständlich geschrieben, was ich bei vielen anderen Mathebüchern vermisse. Westermann erschlägt nicht mit Seitenlangen Rechnungen, bei denen man nach der dritte Zeile schon nicht mehr weiß, was eigentlich in der ersten stand. Ein gelungenes Lehrbuch, mit dem sogar Mathe Spaß macht! Dieses Buch ist ein äußerst empfehlenswerter Leitfaden für die Mathematik im Grundstudium und eignet sich auch hervorragend als Nachschlagewerk.Was dieses Werk wohl am meisten von den Standard- Mathematikwerken unterscheidet ist der starke Bezug zu verschiedensten Anwendungsbereichen. Westermann gelingt es mit diesem Buch die Mathematik dem Studenten nahezubringen, indem er auf praxisorientierte Beispiele zurückgreift. Die Anwendungsbeispiele sind sehr hilfreich für das Verständnis, da die "abstrakte Rechnerei" zum Werkzeug wird, um reale Probleme zu lösen. Der Aufbau ist sehr gut strukturiert. Themengebiete beginnen mit den oben genannten Anwendungsbeispielen. Die einzelnen Schritte werden ersichtlich dargelegt und mit Beispielen vertieft. Zusätzlich verdeutlichen Graphiken den Sachverhalt. Ein weiterer Bonuspunkt ist, dass es zu allen Themen auch eine Anleitung gibt, die jeweiligen Verfahren mit Maple zu konstruieren. Bevor das nächste Thema angeschnitten wird, erhält man eine Zusammenstellung der Maple-Befehle und das Ganze schließt mit einem Aufgabenteil (Aufgaben zum Rechnen und für Maple) ab, um das gewonnene Wissen zu untermauern. Lösungen sind im Buch dabei, was in vielen anderen Werken leider allzu oft fehlt. Für Maple Anwendungen ist das Verzeichnis von Maple-Befehlen im Buchende sehr hilfreich.
