Probably the two most important factors responsible for promoting the current knowledge of endothelial functions are 1) observations in the late sixties-early seventies that many non-ventilatory properties of the lung could be attributed to the pulmonary endothelium and 2) the establishment, in the early and mid-seventies of procedures for routine culture of vascular endothelial cells. Many of these endothelial functions require the presence of receptors on the surface of the plasma membrane. There is now evidence for the existence among others of muscarinic, a-and /3-adrenergic, purine, insulin, histamine, bradykinin, lipoprotein, thrombin, paf, fibronectin, vitronectin, interleukin and albumin receptors. For some of these ligands, there is evidence only for the existence of endothelial binding sites. Traditionally, agonist binding must elicit a response for the binding site to be considered a receptor and, in some cases, the nature of the response resulting from the interaction of a substance with the endothelium remains unclear. It is beyond the scope of this introduction to even enumerate the various endothelial homeostatic processes. As many of the authors point out, depression was clearly identified as a central problem in schizophrenia by the pioneers of psychiatry. Their wisdom and clinical acumen was lost for a time to be only recently re discovered. Their insights must now be integrated with modern taxonomic systems, evolving etiological models and methods of assessment. With increased recognition of the problem of depression in this population we must also examine appropriate methods of ameliorating the suffering of those afflicted. The conference was divided into sections (theoretical aspects, phenomenology, suicide and treatment) and the chairmen of these sections have given brief introductions. Necessary overlap of topics and methods provided a convergent and validating examination of empirical results which may serve to direct continuing studies. Our interest in this area emanates from our experience in directing the Fullerton Longitudinal Study. In the course of this investigation, we observed families undergoing transformation, most commonly in maternal employment and marital status. Our initial research on the role of maternal employment in children's development provided the scientific foundation for our interest. Just as we feel that maternal employment and dual-earner families should be comprehensively re searched regarding their relationships to children's development, we also believe that other contemporary family arrangements should receive extensive attention in the developmental literature. In the mid-l990s such views are still widely held and these two strands of anthropology have tended to go their own way, happily not talking to one another. Nevertheless, in the intervening years Darwinian ideas have gradually begun to encroach on the cultural landscape in variety of ways, and topics that had not been linked together since the mid-19th century have once again come to be seen as connected. For static external fields, the induced moments are properties of the ground state. Then the calculation of the polarizability is very accurate.
