Since at recent meetings of the German Neurosurgical Society central pathophysiological problems such as 'central dysregulation' and 'brain edema' had been discussed extensively, it seemed appropriate to choose another major area of cerebral patho physiology for the meeting in Heidelberg. CEREBRAL HYPOXIA is, as LANGFITT once emphasized, 'the final common denominator' of various cerebral lesions with which the neurosurgeon is confronted every day. Raised intracranial pressure, respiratory disorders and disturbances in systemic arterial blood pressure, etc. may lead, if not treated, to a focal or global lack of oxygen in the brain tissue. Anoxia finally results in cell death and thus in irreversible cerebral damage or even death. Now with the printer's proofs under my eyes I like the book even better than I did then, because of, and influenced by, new experiences in the meantime, and fresh thoughts that crossed my mind. Have I been influenced by what I remembered from the manuscript If so, it must have happened unconsciously. But of course, what struck me in this work a year ago, struck a responsive chord in my own mind. In the past, mathematics teaching theory has strongly been influenced by a view on mathematics as a heap of concepts, and on learning mathematics as concepts attainment. Mathematics teaching practice has been jeopardised by this theoretical approach, which in its most dangerous form expresses itself as a radical atomism. To concepts attainment Fischbein opposes acquisition of intuitions. In my own publications I avoided the word 'intuition' because of the variety of its meanings across languages. For some time I have used the term 'constitution of mathematical objects', which I think means the same as Fischbein's 'acquisition of intuitions' - indeed as I view it, constituting a mental object precedes its conceptualising, and under this viewpoint I tried to observe mathematical activities of young children. 228 pp. Englisch.

This seems to be stimulated by three different factors: i. e. 1. the slowly growing notion about the importance of some essential elements in the metabolism of plants and animals, including man, 2. the increasing extent of environ mental contamination caused by the disposal of heavy elements - both essential and toxic - and 3. the increasing sensitivity achieved in the analysis of these elements by modern techniques. The impact of the last mentioned development has been strong. Enormous improvements have indeed been made in lowering the limits of sensitivity of analytical methods maintaining at the same time good precision. Though there is a strong competition between some techniques, neutron activation analysis shows special advantages for multi-element analyses in organic materials. If the results are to be reliable, patch tests should be performed properly and the technique should not be varied in an arbitrary manner. The examiner should adhere strictly to the standard procedure so as to understand its possibilities and its limitations. Interpretation of the actual patch test reactions places high demands on the experience and skill of the examiner and on his knowledge of chemistry and pharmacology. This monograph is concerned only with the patch test method used to demonstrate the existence of contact allergy and light-potentiated contact allergy. It does not describe the 'prophetic patch test' ('predictive patch test'), which is used to demonstrate the sensitizing capacity of a substance.
