Second, it suffers as a target organ of long-standing hypertension, and third, it experiences the effects of antihypertensive therapy. Perhaps… most contested at the present time is the involvement of the kidney in the patho genesis of essential hypertension. More than a century ago, William Osler put forward three basic hypotheses about the 'genuine contracted kidney. 'l 1. 'The hypertrophy can be regarded as an effect to overcome a sort of stop-cock action of the vessels when under the influence of an irritating ingredient in the blood greatly contracted and increased the peripheral resistance. ' Clearly this hypothesis of an 'irritating ingredient' is perhaps the most convincing nowadays, and numerous attempts have been made to identify a specific vasoconstrictive agent in the blood in essential hypertension. 2. 'The obliteration of a large number of capillary territories in the kidney materially raised the arterial pressure. An additional factor of dimin ished excretion of water also heightened the pressure within the blood vessel. ' Today we know that fluid volume overload in the presence of reduced renal mass seems to be the most likely mechanism accoun ting for renal parenchymal hypertension and, as shown by Guyton's group, for certain forms of experimental hypertension. 3.

Cancer Treatment and Research is a series of authoritative volumes which aim to meet this need. It is an attempt to establish a critical mass of oncology literature covering virtually all oncology topics, revised frequently to keep the coverage up to date, easily available on a single library shelf or by a single personal subscription. We have approached the problem in the following fashion. First, by divid ing the oncology literature into specific subdivisions such as lung cancer, genitourinary cancer, pediatric oncology, etc. Second, by asking eminent authorities in each of these areas to edit a volume on the specific topic on an annual or biannual basis. Each topic and tumor type is covered in a volume appearing frequently and predictably, discussing current diagnosis, staging, markers, all forms of treatment modalities, basic biology, and more.

A reliable assessment of the success or failure of a micro vascular anastomosis or an aneurysm operation has until now been poss…ible only postoperatively by angiography and transcutaneous Doppler sonography. Of particular impor tance are the stenoses and occlusions which can occur dur ing the operation, but which are frequently not detected un til after surgery. This induced the neurosurgeons in Freiburg, as well as those in several other hospitals, to carry out a rou tine control with postoperative transcutaneous Doppler fol lowing extracranial-intracranial bypass operations and an giography while still under anesthesia following aneurysm operations. The stenoses and occlusions detected were often not apparent intraoperatively. The reasons for this are that from the outside we see only the surface - and not the lu men - of a v~ssel, and that stenoses caused by thrombosis, indentation of the vessel wall during anastomosis or by plaque on the vessel wall are not externally obvious. Even arterial pulsation is no guarantee of patency. The necessity to be able to detect stenoses during the op eration is obvious. The microvascular Doppler sonography adopted by Dr. Gilsbach provides an expedient and safe method of recognizing such lumen narrowings. 120 pp. Englisch.

The reasons for this are not difficult to understand: non-missile head injury and its sequelae-often a permanently brain damaged young adult-is one of the major problems that has faced society for many decades, and is continuing to do so since relatively little progress appears to ha ve been roade in its prevention; and the hope is that experimentalists may be able to shed some light at least on the potential for regeneration in the central nervous system. These proceedings are the outcome of that very successful symposium held in Vienna in September 1982. The Society is most grateful to Allgemeine Unfallversicherungsanstalt (AUVA), Vienna, for their sponsorship. Ofthe faur major presentations, two were on the subject of non missile head injury in man and experimental animals, and two dealt with recent developments in the field of regeneration. The reasons for this widespread recogni tion are clear. First, professional…s of many disciplines deal with child abusive families and do so in a variety of ways: Physicians, hospital staff, and teachers are often the first to assess a child as the victim of abuse; social workers and child-protective personnel investigate cases of suspected abuse; court and legal authorities make determinations concerning the needs of an abused child; and mental health profes sionals, including psychologists, social workers, and family coun selors, often have responsibility for treating abusive families. Few clinical problems have received this kind of widespread interdisci plinary recognition and, given the nature and seriousness of child abusive behavior, few problems receive such intensive attention within each profession's literature. A second factor responsible for increased study of child abuse is the fact that violence directed toward children is probably the most extreme form of family dysfunction seen by counselors, therapists, and other practitioners. While other types of child-management and anger-control problems occur far more frequently, the consequences of child-abusive behavior are much more serious than the conse quences of other problems seen in child or family clinics.
