Instead it was agreed that we should attempt to arrange a separate symposium, dealing with the fundamental problems of the cali bration of absolute magnitudes and temperatures of stars. The Executive Committee of the IAU accepted our proposal, and IAU Symposium No. 54 was held in Geneva on September 12-15, 1972, sponsored by thefollowing IAU Commissions: 24, 25, 29, 33, 35, 37,44 and 45. It was attended by about 90 scientists representing 16 countries. The Symposium was divided into eight sessions. Each session started with a review paper by an invited speaker; this was followed by a general discussion including a few contributed papers. Little previous knowledge is presumed of the reader. It can be recom mended to students familiar with the usual structure, based on co ordinates, of the elements of analytic geometry, differential and integral calculus and of the theory of differential equations. All the papers appear here for the first time. Unlike many a philosophy of science anthology, this one is not center ed on the philosophy of physics. In fact the papers deal with conceptual and, in particular, philosophical problems that pop up in almost every one of the provinces of the vast territory constituted by the foundations, meth odology and philosophy of science. A couple of border territories which are in the process of being infiltrated have been added for good measure. The inclusion of papers in the philosophy of formal science and in the philosophies of physics and of biology, in a volume belonging to a series devoted to the philosophy and methodology of the social and behavioral sciences, should raise no eyebrows. Because the sciences of man make use of logic and mathematics, they are interested in questions such as whether the formal sciences have anything to do with reality (rather than with our theories about reality) and whether or not logic has kept up with the practice of mathematicians. Armstrong and Lillie encountered the agent in a monkey when they passaged a recent isolate of the St. Louis encephalitis virus; Rivers and Scott isolated 5 strains from patients with meningitis; and Traub revealed the virus in a colony of albino mice. Already in these first isolations mice were incriminated, and later observa tions proved beyond doubt that M. musculus is the principal reservoir of the virus in nature. For some time LCM virus was regarded as the sole etiologic agent of Wallgren's 'meningite aseptique aigue'. Soon, however, it became clear that Wallgren's syndrome had a multitude of causes, among which the LCM virus was of little relevance, and in subsequent years it disappeared from the sight of most viro logists. Die Diagnose hat ihr Ziel verfehlt, wenn sie lediglich den Patienten als Diabetiker, Herz-oder Niereninsuffizienten, Ubergewichtigen, Leukamiker oder Asthmatiker bezeichnet. Die Diagnostik soll erkennen lassen, wie der Patient zu seiner Krankheit gekommen ist und was diese Krankheit fUr den Patienten bedeutet. Nicht das jetzige Ergebnis, sondern die Prozesse, die dazu gefiihrt haben, sind zu analysieren; warum, wann und wo Regelprozesse gestort wurden oder versagt haben. Die Diagno stik soll maglichst auf molekular-biologischer Ebene die individuellen Vari anten der Lebensprozesse erkennen lassen. Das Resultat soll nicht die Krankheitsbezeichnung, sondern der Behandlungsplan sein.
