The essential contribution of location theory, however, is in a world in which there are such nonconvexities. If resources are distributed evenly and the usual convexity assumptions made,… then economic activity would be distributed evenly; there would be no concentration of pro duction. Thus the statement that is usually made, that the standard results carry over to a world in which there is spatial choice, is too weak and fails to capture the essence oflocation theory. Nevertheless, we must also concede that, while the introduction of the spatial dimension is interesting and fruitful when (perhaps only when) there are non convexities, space should not be thought of as a panacea whereby problems those associated with economies of scale, for example -can be made to disap pear. There is no guarantee, for example, that production units will be operated in convex regions of their total cost curves, even if they are constrained to oper ate in a 'space economy'. These considerations led to the conclusion that the role of spatial choice and the determinants of such choice would be best analysed by case study. This book is one such study. It is based on my doctoral dissertation at the University of Cambridge, fmanced by a grant from the Social Science Research Council.

' But it is also true that such changes reflect a deepening desire on the part of t…he academic community to deal effectively with a host of problems which must be solved if we are to have a health-care delivery system which is efficient, humane, and just. To a large degree, these problems are the unique result of both rapidly changing moral values and dramatic advances in biomedical technology. The past decade has witnessed sudden and conspicuous controversy over the morality and legality of new practices relating to abortion, therapy for the mentally ill, experimentation using human subjects, forms of genetic interven tion, and euthanasia. Malpractice suits abound, and astronomical fees for malpractice insurance threaten the very possibility of medical and health-care practice. Without the backing of a clear moral consensus, the law is frequently forced into resolving these conflicts only to see the moral issues involved still hotly debated and the validity of the existing law further questioned. Take abortion, for example. Rather than settling the legal issue, the Supreme Court's original abortion decision in Roe v. Wade (1973), seems only to have spurred further legal debate. And of course, whether or not abortion is a mo rally ac ceptable procedure is still the subject of heated dispute.'.

Covering all salient developments of the last few years in a single symposium would require weeks, legions of partic…ipants and parallel sessions, highlighting the differences in language and communication problems between pure mathematicians, high and low energy physicists and chemists. The symposium held July 1978 at the Centre of Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Bielefeld focussed on a small area, the pertinence of the permutation group in chemical physics, with the goal to increase and generate a fruitful dialogue between mathe maticians and chemists. In chemistry, concerned with the electronic and geometric structure of molecules as well as elementary chemical reactions, i.e. rearrangements in these structures, the permutation group has its relevance, since with its representations the effects and consequences of exchanging indistin guishable particles, electrons and identical nuclei, can be systematized and classified. This may be exemplified by a brief survey of the lectures presented, which may also serve as a first orientation to the articles of this volume. In the first two contributions by A. Kerber and J.G. Nourse, the permutation group is used in the counting and systemtaic generation of stereoisomers aiding in the elucidation of possible molecular structures. These transformations are used to solve certain partial differential equations, particular…ly non-linear evolution equations. Of course jets have been employed for some time in the theory of partial differential equations, but so far little use has been made of them in applications. In the meanwhile, substantial progress has been made in the study of non-linear evolution equations. This work has been encouraged by the dis covery of remarkable properties of some such equations, for example the existence of soliton solutions and of infinite se quences of conservation laws. Among the techniques devised to deal with these equations are the inverse scattering method and the Backlund transformation. In our opinion the jet bundle formulation offers a unifying geometrical framework for under standing the properties of non-linear evolution equations and the techniques used to deal with them, although we do not consider all of these properties and techniques here. The relevance of the theory of jet bundles lS that it legitimates the practice of regarding the partial derivatives of field variables as independent quantities. Since Backlund trans formations require from the outset manipulation of these partial derivatives, and repeated shifts of point of view about which variables are dependent on which, this geometrical setting clari fies and simplifies the concepts involved, and offers the prospect of bringing coherence to a variety of disparate results. 144 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The term 'function algebra' usually refers to a uniformly closed algebra of complex valued continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space. Such Banach alge bras, which are also called 'uniform algebras', have been much studied d…uring the past 15 or 20 years. Since the most important examples of uniform algebras consist of, or are built up from, analytic functions, it is not surprising that most of the work has been dominated by questions of analyticity in one form or another. In fact, the study of these special algebras and their generalizations accounts for the bulk of the re search on function algebras. We are concerned here, however, with another facet of the subject based on the observation that very general algebras of continuous func tions tend to exhibit certain properties that are strongly reminiscent of analyticity. Although there exist a variety of well-known properties of this kind that could be mentioned, in many ways the most striking is a local maximum modulus principle proved in 1960 by Hugo Rossi [RIl]. This result, one of the deepest and most elegant in the theory of function algebras, is an essential tool in the theory as we have developed it here. It holds for an arbitrary Banaeh algebra of Pds. unctions defined on the spectrum (maximal ideal space) of the algebra. There is much evidence to support this notion in parts (mechanical cellolysis of erythrocytes and thrombocytes), however, these changes have to be seen in a broader bio logical context as an organ-specific reaction of the blood. It is an unjustified oversimplification to simply treat the blood as transport organ for respiratory gases (02 and CO ) and metabolites. The blood is rather also an organ 2 system for specific and unspecific defense mechanisms, di rected against the hazards of mechanical, microbiological and toxicological risks posed to multicellular macro-orga nisms in an environment in which trauma and other distur bances of the physical integrity are common. The two defense systems of the blood are based on humural and cellular constituents; the latter have to be considered as 'excitable cells', capable of responding in a predictable and automatic fashion to adequate stimuli. The response of the cellular constituents in controlled and coordinated by chemical mediators. The immunological research of the last century has distinguished two separate defense systems of the blood: I.
