Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Already known as a Wagner scholar for his work on the sketches of the Flying Dutchman, Paul Machlin has for many years taken a scholarly interest in the school of Harlem 'stride' jazz pianists. Stride: The Music of Fats Waller is a full analysis of the piano music of Waller as composer, soloist and recording artist. 38 music examples illustrate Waller's complex keyboard style and improvisatory techniques. The discussion of Waller's piano music is set in the context of a biographical study, and a discography listing all known recordings by the pianist.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - In the l~nited States and in Europe~ there has been an increasing interest in the relationship between individual behavior and disease. The American National Academy of Sciences (Hamberg, Elliott, and Parron, 1982)' through its Institutes of Medicine, has estimated that as many as 50 percent of chronic disease cases can be traced to individual behaviors such as smoking, diet, exercise, etc. Similar conclusions have been reached by a variety of European investigators and institutes. The World Health Organization has also expressed considerable interest in individual behavior in relation to the development of chronic disease. Thus, throughout the NATO countries there has been increased awareness of the relationship between behavior and disease. However, communication among investigators in different countries has been rather limited. Further, many different scientific disciplines including psychology, sociology, medicine, microbiology, statistics, and epidemiology have all developed new and different literatures in this field. One purpose of this book is to bring together contributions from scientists in each of these fields. Much of the variance in individual health behavior occurs across countries rather than within countries. Thus, we can learn much from comparing behavior-disease relationships across countries. To date, there have been few studies which have had an adequate international basis for these comparisons. Interest in behavioral epidemiology is a relatively recent phenomena. Thus, many scientists are entering the field without uniform background, experience, or training. This book discusses approaches common in a variety of NATO countries.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The concepts of acute coronary care are changing so rapidly that it is appropriate that the volume ACUTE CORONARY CARE: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE, published early in 1985, would have yearly updates. The process of rapid production of camera-ready manuscripts has added new capability to the exchange of information. ACUTE CORONARY CARE 1986 is the first of a series of yearly updates in this important area of cardiology. Materials published during the fall of 1984, including abstracts for the November American Heart Association meetings were reviewed by the editors to identify the areas of new information and the authors making important contri butions. Manuscripts were completed and edited during the spring of 1985 and the final camera-ready versions were delivered to Martinus Nijhoff by mid-July. The broad area of coronary care is divided into its five time sectors: Pre-hospital, Post-admission, Coronary Care Unit, Pre-discharge, and Conva lescent. As patients are more frequently encountered in the pre-hospital phase, it has become evident that alterations in the autonomic nervous system have a great impact on the clinical situation. The chapter by Ron Victor emphasizes the important interactions between the nervous system and the cardiovascular system in this critical situation.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -About fifteen years ago Henning Rodhe and I disscussed the calculation of residence times, or lifetimes, of certain air pollutants for the first time. He was interested in pollutants which were mainly removed from the atmosphere by precipitation scavenging. His idea was to base the calculation on statistical models for the variation of the precipitation i~tensity and not only on the average precipitation intensity. In order to illustrate the importance of taking the variation into account we considered a simple model - here called the Markov model - for the precipitation intensity and computed the distribution of the residence time of an aerosol particle. Our expression for the average residence time - here formula (13- was rather much used by meteorologists. Certainly we were pleased, but while our ambition had been to provide an illustration, our work was merely understood as a proposal for a realistic model. Therefore we found it natural to search for more general models. The mathematical problems involved were the origin of my interest in this field. A brief outline of the background, purpose and content of this paper is given in section 1. It is a pleasure to thank Gunnar Englund, Georg Lindgren, Henning Rodhe and Michael Stein for their substantial help in the pre paration of this paper and Iren Patricius for her assistance in typing. 120 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg, Austria, has been involved in research on nondifferentiable optimization since 1976. IIASA-based East-West cooperation in this field has been very productive, leading to many important theoretical, algorithmic and applied results. Nondifferentiable optimi zation has now become a recognized and rapidly developing branch of mathematical programming. To continue this tradition, and to review recent developments in this field, IIASA held a Workshop on Nondifferentiable Optimization in Sopron (Hungary) in September 1964. The aims of the Workshop were: 1. To discuss the state-of-the-art of nondifferentiable optimization (NDO), its origins and motivation; 2. To compare-various algorithms; 3. To evaluate existing mathematical approaches, their applications and potential; 4. To extend and deepen industrial and other applications of NDO. The following topics were considered in separate sessions: General motivation for research in NDO: nondifferentiability in applied problems, nondifferentiable mathematical models. Numerical methods for solving nondifferentiable optimization problems, numerical experiments, comparisons and software. Nondifferentiable analysis: various generalizations of the concept of subdifferen tials. Industrial and other applications. This volume contains selected papers presented at the Workshop. It is divided into four sections, based on the above topics: I. Concepts in Nonsmooth Analysis II. Multicriteria Optimization and Control Theory III. Algorithms and Optimization Methods IV. Stochastic Programming and Applications We would like to thank the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, particularly Prof. V. Kaftanov and Prof. A.B. Kurzhanski, for their support inorganiz ing this meeting. 364 pp. Englisch.

C. von Weizsacker stimu lated me to direct my research, at the Faculty of Actuarial Science and Econometrics of the University of Amsterdam, to the exploitation of Dutch natural gas. This issue raised many theoretical problems, in which I got gradually more and more involved. I was lucky to find in prof. dr. H. Weddepohl a person prepared to listen patiently and to read and critisize my numerous attempts to solve these problems. The actual work on the present monograph started in 1982 at the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Eindhoven University of Technology, in the context of the program 'Equilibrium and Dis equilibrium' of the 'voorwaardelijke financiering' (universitary financing system). I wish to thank here my supervisors prof. dr. P. Ruys and prof. dr. H. Weddepohl for their comments on earlier drafts of this monograph. When looking back, I realize that their remarks and our dis cussions have led to notable improvements. Also the Internation~l Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Laxenburg, Austria) has made a valuable contribution by offering me the opportunity to spend three months in its serene academic environment in the summer of 1983. Thanks also to the energy group of I. I. A. S. A. and the I. I. A. S. A. foundation Netherlands. 184 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When we consider the main object of forestry, the tree, it immediately becomes clear why experimental population geneticists have been so hesitant in making this object a primary concern of their research. Trees are very long-living organisms with generation intervals frequently exceeding those of their investigators by multiples. They virtually exclude, therefore, application of the classical methods of population genetics since these are based on observing genetic structures over generations. This situation, where the limits set to observation are so severe, particularly requires close cooperation between theory and experiment. It also requires careful consideration of results obtained for organisms other than trees, in order to gain additional insights by comparing the results for trees with those for other organisms. Yet, the greatest challenge to population and ecological genetics probably originates from the fact that forests are very likely to be the most complex ecosystems of all, even in some cases where they are subject to intense management. This complexity, which equally comprises biotic and abiotic factors varying both in time and space, makes extremely high demands on the adaptational capacity and thus flexibility of the carriers of such an ecosystem. Longevity combined with immobility during the vegetative phase, however, appears to contradict the obvious necessity of adaptational flexibility in forest tree populations when compared with short lived and/or mobile organisms. 300 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -These notes are an extended version of lectures given in the Symposium on Mathematics and Development arranged by the School of Mathematical Sciences of the University of Khartoum, Sudan, in 1982. The purpose of the notes is to discuss some models for the transmission of tropical infections. This area of mathematical epidemiology has previously received only minor attention by mathematicians, but is now growing in importance. The term 'hybrid model' is used to denote a model with both stochastic and deterministic ingredients. We describe how a hybrid model approach can be used to formulate and study both some classical models for malaria and schistosomiasis and some extensions of these models. The formulation of the models requires some familiarity with Markov chains in continuous time and discrete state space. The analysis of the models uses concepts and methods in the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations. The presentation is aimed at the senior undergraduate or beginning graduate level. 220 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is primarily based on the research done by the Numerical Analysis Group at the Goethe-Universitat in Frankfurt/Main, and on material presented in several graduate courses by the author between 1977 and 1981. It is hoped that the text will be useful for graduate students and for scientists interested in studying a fundamental theoretical analysis of numerical methods along with its application to the most diverse classes of differential and integral equations. The text treats numerous methods for approximating solutions of three classes of problems: (elliptic) boundary-value problems, (hyperbolic and parabolic) initial value problems in partial differential equations, and integral equations of the second kind. The aim is to develop a unifying convergence theory, and thereby prove the convergence of, as well as provide error estimates for, the approximations generated by specific numerical methods. The schemes for numerically solving boundary-value problems are additionally divided into the two categories of finite difference methods and of projection methods for approximating their variational formulations. 416 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Mankind lives, works, and plays on the earth's surface. The majority of such human activities change in some manner the geological materials and processes of our planet. It is the basis of this book that an understanding of this relationship is significant. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that natural processes and events can in turn greatly affect society. Erosion devastates farms and grazing lands. The spectacular hazards of earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, and landslides can lead to disastrous loss of life and property. Thus, one theme in this book is to provide perspective on the duality of these impacts on the environmental scene. Geology is a key component that can lead to an improved understanding of these changes and influences. A care full orchestration of geological studies can help soften the deleterious aspects of nature and minimize the harmful byproducts of civilization. This is the central message that is repeated throughout these pages. This book is one of a series of volumes published and in preparation in the series entitled 'Environmental Resources Management. ' Books already in print include two on soils, and others on mineral resources, and land-use planning. These will be followed by books on surface-water resources, groundwater resources, environmental pollution, energy resources, coastal environments, glacial environments, arid regional environments, and others. Chapter 1 provides the introduction and sets the stage and tone for the book. Chapters 2,3, and 4 deal with the resource base of society - minerals, fuels, and water. 424 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is intended as a contribution to the theory of contingent claim valuation based on arbitrage considerations. It is concerned with preference-free valuations of contingent claims (such as options written on a stock) in frictionless multiperiod securities markets that do not permit arbitrage profits. Besides the question of pricing it considers the possibility of hedging in securities markets. The research reported in this book was carried out at the Institut fUr Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften, University of Bonn. While working in this field and preparing this monograph I received helpful comments and encouragement from many people, and I would like to thank all of them. Special thanks are due to Prof. Dr. Dieter Sonder mann. He first stimulated my interest in the theory of contingent claim valuation and commented on my work at various stages. Furthermore, I would like to thank Profs. Martin Hellwig, Peter Schonfeld and Klaus SchUrger, all University of Bonn, for helpful comments on earlier ver sions of this monograph. Parts of this monograph were presented at va rious meetings including the European Meeting of the Econometric Socie ty, Pisa 1983, the European Meeting of the Econometric Society, Madrid 1984, and the third Conference 'Geld, Banken und Versicherungen', Karls ruhe 1984. Although lhe imporlance of the dynamical element was recognized quile early on, lhe method chosen, more often than not, was a static equilibrium analysis. One reason for this obviously lies in the mathematical intricacies of non equilibrium situations. Although Poincare and various other classical authors pointed oul the amazing complexity of some mechanical problems, lhe general lrend, as reflected in the standard texlbooks, was lo ignore such 'subtleties' and concenlrate on a handful of lraclable equations and localized slability analysis. Il is only in lhe lasl decade thal the importance and universal nature of complicated asymptotic behavior has become more widely recognized. This shift in perspective is due lo lhe development of new mathematical lechniques, lo the spread of computing facilities and, possibly, lo lhe growing recognition of the limits of lhe human ability to handle, predict and control complex situatIons. 292 pp. Englisch.

In a Physiology and Biochemistry general foreword to these different volumes, it seems to me appropriate to consider briefly what may be the comparative approach. Living organisms, beyond the diversity of their morphological forms, have evolved a widespread range of basic solutions to cope with the different problems, both organisma! and environmental, with which they are faced. Soon after the turn of the century, some biologists realized that these solutions can be best comprehended In the framework of a comparative approach integrating results of phYSiological and biochemical studies done at the organismic, cellular and molecular levels. The development of this approach amongst both physiologists and biochemists remained, however, extremely slow until recently. 192 pp. Englisch.
