Neuware - Biochemical Modulation at the present time defines an area of study in which the intracellular metabolism of a given anti cancer agent is modulated (usually by a noncytotoxic agent or a cytotoxic agent at sufficiently low dosage to make it non cytotoxic) in order to either increase the effectiveness of the particular agent against tumor cells or decrease its cytotox icity against normal cells. The major focus of modulation has been the agents 5-fluorouracil (FUra), arabinofuranosylcytosine (ara-C), methotrexate (MTX) and a few alkylating agents. The major thrust of the studies has been to increase the flow of the anticancer agent along the pathway responsible for the formation of the cytotoxic species: for example, FUra to FUTP or ara-C to ara-CTP. While in most cases the application of research re sults to clinical trials does not require the subsequent exper tise of the laboratory researchers, application of biochemical modulatory schemes to clinical protocols necessitate a dramatic break with the past procedures. As shown in the laboratory clinical loop below, close collaboration between the laboratory and clinical investigator is essential. While the laboratory REDEFINE TECHNOLOGY, TESTS OR QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER THERAPEUTIC ADVANCE CLINICAL EXPERIMENTAL PROTOCOL (LABORATORY) RESEARCH STUDIES DEFINE AND TEST APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC PARAMETERS results define rationally-based regimens, it is essential that the clinical protocols contain the requirement that clinical material (either tumor or normal tissues) be sampled to deter mine whether the biochemical modulation being proposed is in fact beinq accomplished.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The subject of modelling and application of stochastic processes is too vast to be exhausted in a single volume. In this book, attention is focused on a small subset of this vast subject. The primary emphasis is on realization and approximation of stochastic systems. Recently there has been considerable interest in the stochastic realization problem, and hence, an attempt has been made here to collect in one place some of the more recent approaches and algorithms for solving the stochastic realiza tion problem. Various different approaches for realizing linear minimum-phase systems, linear nonminimum-phase systems, and bilinear systems are presented. These approaches range from time-domain methods to spectral-domain methods. An overview of the chapter contents briefly describes these approaches. Also, in most of these chapters special attention is given to the problem of developing numerically ef ficient algorithms for obtaining reduced-order (approximate) stochastic realizations. On the application side, chapters on use of Markov random fields for modelling and analyzing image signals, use of complementary models for the smoothing problem with missing data, and nonlinear estimation are included. Chapter 1 by Klein and Dickinson develops the nested orthogonal state space realization for ARMA processes. As suggested by the name, nested orthogonal realizations possess two key properties; (i) the state variables are orthogonal, and (ii) the system matrices for the (n + l)st order realization contain as their 'upper' n-th order blocks the system matrices from the n-th order realization (nesting property).

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The first edition of this work appeared almost thirty years ago, when, as we can see in retrospect, the study of the actinide elements was in its first bloom. Although the broad features of the chemistry of the actinide elements were by then quite well delineated, the treatment of the subject in the first edition was of necessity largely descriptive in nature. A detailed understanding of the chemical consequences of the characteristic presence of Sf electrons in most of the members of the actinide series was still for the future, and many of the systematic features of the actinide elements were only dimly apprehended. In the past thirty years all this has changed. The application of new spectroscopic techniques, which came into general use during this period, and new theoretical insights, which came from a better understanding of chemical bonding, inorganic chemistry, and solid state phenomena, were among the important factors that led to a great expansion and maturation in actinide element research and a large number of new and important findings. The first edition consisted of a serial description of the individual actinide elements, with a single chapter devoted to the six heaviest elements (lawrencium, the heaviest actinide, was yet to be discovered). Less than 15 % of the text was devoted to a consideration of the systematics of the actinide elements.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Many mathematics books suffer from schizophrenia, and this is yet another. On the one hand it tries to be a reference for the basic results on flat riemannian manifolds. On the other hand it attempts to be a textbook which can be used for a second year graduate course. My aim was to keep the second personality dominant, but the reference persona kept breaking out especially at the end of sections in the form of remarks that contain more advanced material. To satisfy this reference persona, I'll begin by telling you a little about the subject matter of the book, and then I'll talk about the textbook aspect. A flat riemannian manifold is a space in which you can talk about geometry (e. g. distance, angle, curvature, 'straight lines,' etc. ) and, in addition, the geometry is locally the one we all know and love, namely euclidean geometry. This means that near any point of this space one can introduce coordinates so that with respect to these coordinates, the rules of euclidean geometry hold. These coordinates are not valid in the entire space, so you can't conclude the space is euclidean space itself. In this book we are mainly concerned with compact flat riemannian manifolds, and unless we say otherwise, we use the term 'flat manifold' to mean 'compact flat riemannian manifold. ' It turns out that the most important invariant for flat manifolds is the fundamental group. 260 pp. Englisch.

The Conference was attended by 52 direct participants from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, France, the Federal Republic of Germany and The Netherlands. Amongst these were prominent representatives of politics, science, media and peace groups. Under the chairmanship ofMr. Piet Dankert, former President of the European Parliament and former Vice Chairman of the Netherlands Atlantic Commission, and in the presence of 200 observers, the participants discussed the most topical themes of the European security debate. The themes of discussion were each introduced by an outstanding member of the international political scene. The verbatim texts and subsequent discussions have been edited and printed according to the order of the Conference. The editors have furthermore added for the sake of completeness a discourse by Ambassador Maynard Glitman, US negotiator in Geneva on Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces, on the principles and prospects of the US negotiating position. This discourse was held during the annual Study Conference of the Netherlands Atlantic Commission at October 11th, 1985. The Atlantic Commission wishes to express its gratitude to the Algemene Loterij Nederland and the European Cultural Foundation for providing funds for its second international Round Table Conference. 144 pp. Englisch.

It was the 8th in a series which started in 1966 with a meeting in Naples on the 'Physiology and Biochemistry of Haemocyanins' organized by F. Ghiretti. The list of contributors and participants of the Naples meeting reports thirty names among which we find that of A. C. Redfield, a pioneer of this field. In Tutzing over 100 scientists came together to discuss their research on all types of oxygen transporting proteins. Clearly the invertebrate hemoglobins have received increasing attention, and a more unified view of their complex quaternary structure is emerging. Their sequences are becoming unravelled and their functions more rationally understood. Hemerythrins have been covered, and their mechanism of binding oxygen explained lucidly. In the hemocyanin field there were exiting new results at every structural level - the X-ray structure of Panulirus hemocyanin, a wealth of sequence data for both arthropodan and molluscan types of hemocyanin, the molecular dimension of native hemocyanins provided by cryo-electron microscopy. New insights into the evolution of copper proteins have been obtained. There are new approaches to explain allosteric interaction in such complicated systems. The scope of investigations reaches from molecular genetics to organismic physiology. The conference received major support from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and from the Bayerisches Staatsministerium fUr Unterricht und Kultus. 536 pp. Englisch.

In particular, differences In the volatility of some components and aerosol formation during the vitrification step are of interest. Chemical rather than thermal denitration may have particular merits which could simplify off-gas purification. A reduction in the salt burden of waste solutions, leading to a reduction In the volume of solid waste, may also be achieved. The scientific programme of the Seminar consisted of invited lectures only, given by experts actively engaged in this field of research. The emphasis was on extensive discussions among the partiCipants, with the aim of leading to an objective understanding of the state-of-the-art. The meeting also indentified issues and options for future research. 192 pp. Englisch.

It seemed to him that with the increase in brain size and cognitive powers of our early ancestors many events in the struggle for existence would be just too distressing to observe. How comforting then, for the mother, distraught by the sight of her child being devoured by a lion, to cloud her vision with a flood of tears! Just so, though if the good doctor had pondered further, the following picture might have occurred to him, comfortable in his speculative armchair, and given him some pause for thought. ~ ~. e , ~ ~ ~' I ' . . ~. . - . . . . . ~ VII viii SERIES EDITOR'S FOREWORD These stories do not, of course, get us very far in explaining the evolution of tears or anything else, but they do remind us how far the study of beha vioural adaptation has come this century. This is, in fact, an exciting time for students of behaviour. The last twenty years have seen a great advance in the theoretical armoury for tackling problems of behavioural evolution and adaptation, and a parallel expansion in empirical studies, particularly in the field. The concepts of inclusive fitness and evolutionary stability, for example, have helped to explain major features of social behaviour and have generated entirely new questions and predictions for the field worker to examine. 228 pp. Englisch.

The problem of stopping power for high energy particles interested the earliest pioneers of quantum mechanics such as Bohr and Bethe, who laid the theoretical foun dations of the subject. The experimental origins might perhaps be traced to the original Franck-Hertz experiment. The modern field includes topics as diverse as low energy reflection electron energy loss studies of surface vibrational modes, the spectroscopy of gases and the modern theory of plasmon excitation in crystals. For the study of ELS in electron microscopy, several historically distinct areas of physics are relevant, including the theory of the Debye Waller factor for virtual inelastic scattering, the use of complex optical potentials, lattice dynamics for crystalline specimens and the theory of atomic ionisation for isolated atoms. However the field of electron energy loss spectroscopy contains few useful texts which can be recommended for students. With the recent appearance of Raether's and Egerton's hooks (see text for references), we have for the first time both a comprehensive review text-due to Raether-and a lucid introductory text which emphasizes experimental aspects-due to Egerton. Raether's text tends to emphasize the recent work on surface plasmons, while the strength of Egerton's book is its treatment of inner shell excitations for microanalysis, based on the use of atomic wavefunctions for crystal electrons. 212 pp. Englisch.

In 1983, Dr. Albrecht Harders took on the project of working out a clinically practicable method that would allow atraumatic measurements to be made of the blood flow velocity in the large branches ofthe circle of Willis. The technique has now become a competitor of the conventional methods of measuring the intracranial hemodynamics, including angiography and the xenon method of cerebral blood flow measurement. Harders proceeded from the assumption that the measurement of the blood flow velocity is more relevant for clinical diagnoses than the usual volume flow measurements. He stresses the very valuable application of the technique in detecting cerebral vasospasm before and after aneurysm surgery. The changes in the blood flow velocities measured by transcranial Doppler sonography in the individual vessel segments of the circle of Willis are interpreted with respect to the various factors that can effect such changes (collateral circulation in the circle of Willis, diameter of the vessel, vascular resistance, the general cardiovascular situation, arterial partial CO pressure, autoregulatory factors, position of body). The rate of 2 complications associated with angiography has thus been reduced, since the best time both for angiography and for surgery can be determined, and continuous TCD examinations show when the patient is out of a critical phase of cerebral vasospasm. 148 pp. Englisch.
