KOZAI Chairman of the Organizing Committee STABILITY THEORY IN CELESTIAL MECHANICS J MOSER Courant Institute of Mathematical ScIences, New York University, New York, N. Y. 10012, U.S.A. Abstract, This expository lecture surveys recent progress of the stability theory in Celestial Mechanics with emphasis on the analytical problems. In particular, the old question of convergence of perturbation series are discussed and positive results obtained, in the light of the work by Kolmogorov Arnold and Moser. For the three body problem, classes of quasi-periodic solutions and doubly asymptotic (or homo clinic) orbits are discussed.

Neuware - No student or colleague of Marjorie Grene will miss her incisive presence in these papers on the study and nature of living nature, and we believe the new reader will quickly join the stimulating discussion and critique which Professor Grene steadily provokes. For years she has worked with equally sure knowledge in the classical domain of philosophy and in modern epistemological inquiry, equally philosopher of science and metaphysician. Moreover, she has the deeply sensible notion that she should be a critically intelligent learner as much as an imaginatively original thinker, and as a result she has brought insightful expository readings of other philosophers and scientists to her own work. We were most fortunate that Marjorie Grene was willing to spend a full semester of a recent leave here in Boston, and we have on other occasions sought her participation in our colloquia and elsewhere. Now we have the pleasure of including among the Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science this generous selection from Grene's philosophical inquiries into the understanding of the natural world, and of the men and women in it. I shall present the results wIthout glVlng any detaIls of the experImental apparatus. In general, sources of error and problems in these measurements are not determined by the apparatus itself. The most important new result IS that of Paul Henry (1971), who employed a radiometer mounted on a rotatmg platform suspended beneath a balloon. Because he employed a rotatmg platform he was able to look for amsotropy over a WIde area area of the sky (about one-half of the northern hemIsphere), not Just a CIrcle of con stant dechnatIOn. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The present text is a rational analysis of the concept of the chemical bond by means of the principles of wave mechanics. The discussion of the material has been arranged so as to render its main content comprehensible for readers who may not have had pre'ious training in quantum mechanics. The text comprises three major parts. It begins with an exposition of the fundamental ideas. In this section the principles are reviewed from which de Broglie developed his mechanics; this allows the book to be read by chemistry majors and freshmen alike. However, we believe that it may also be of interest to university-and college teachers who must include certain aspects of quantum chemistry into their courses while being insufficiently familiar with the subject. It may even be of interest to science teachers in secondary schools. Finally, having been a witness to the evolution of these notions for over a quarter of a century, we present certain concepts from a particular point of view which might prove attractive to chemists of all kinds, perhaps even quantum chemists. The second, more technical part summarizes the methods of constructing wave functions that describe the electrons in molecules. This section can only be fully appreciated by those readers who are familiar with some aspects of the algorithms used in quantum mechanics. 124 pp. Englisch.

I am speaking of the philosophical concept of the 'category. ' In Aristotle's system, there were ten categories (or 'predicaments') of reality or being. These included substantiality, time, place, quantity, quality, and other aspects of knowable beings. The most notable thing about these categories is that they all have to do with what we would call 'objective' realities. That is, none of them purport to describe subjective or mental states or conditions. In modern philosophy (i. e. , philosophy since the time of Descartes), there was a swing of the pendulum in the opposite direction, from objectivity to subjectivity - culminating in the twelve new 'categories' of Kant. All of Kant's categories were subjective ways oflooking at reality: We can organize objective phenomena into universal unities; therefore the first Kantian cate gory is 'unity. ' We can separate objective phenomena into particular divi sions; therefore the second category is 'plurality. ' And so forth. With Hegel, the modern trend to subjectivism is arrested, and we have, not surprisingly, a new type of 'category' - the category of the unity of thought and being, of self and other, of subject and object. 96 pp. Englisch.

THE MAN, CONRAD OF PRUSSIA Conrad of Prussia is not so much as mentioned in any of the usual sources. And even such notable mediaevalists as Mlle. Marie-Therese d'Alverny, Conservateur en-chef, and J. Reginald O'Donnell, C. S. B. , of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Toronto, Canada, have been unable to identify him. Nothing at all, therefore, is known about Conrad, if that is the author's name. For there is some doubt that it is. In the colophon of the Admont commentary on Aquinas' De Ente et Essentia,l we find a word, so completely erased that it is illegible, followed by the words 'de Prusya. ' Martin Grabmann argues that it is correct to feel that the erasure is an erasure of the name 'Conradi,' since in the colophon of the Admont commentary on Dominicus Gundissalinus' De Unitate et Uno,2 which follows the commentary on the De Ente et Essentia, we find again an erased word followed by the words 'de Prusya. ' But the erasure is not complete. One can here read the name 'Conradi. ' 3 And so, the manuscript of the commentary on the De Unitate et Uno clearly attributed this work to Conrad of Prussia before the attempted erasure. 216 pp. Englisch.

One method of evaluating such issues is the workshop, and this report describes the results of the third TIE workshop on a major environmental subject. The ecology of tropical regions is of interest to all the inhabitants of the biosphere. The tropics provide mankind with both the opportunity for and the challenge of essential resources, land for settlement and development, and waters for numerous uses. Moreover, they provide examples of misuse of the landscape, fragility of ecological systems, and serious environmental problems. Unfortunately, the study of the ecology of the tropics has not kept pace with the ecology of other regions. The purpose of this report, therefore, is to determine the research approaches that will lead to advances in our theoretical un derstanding of tropical systems and, more importantly, in the applica tion of that knowledge to human problems. Although the principal focus of the report is on the neotropics, it will be useful to the full spectrum of persons concerned with the tropics around the world government officials, sCientists, students of ecology, and others. TIE is especially pleased to thank the numerous scientists and ad ministrators who participated in the workshop and who contributed to this report. Arthur D. 288 pp. Englisch.

An idealistic, sincere, and hardworking monarch whose ultilitarian bent, humanitarian instincts, and ambitious programs of reform in every area of public concern have prompted historians to term him an 'enlightened despot,' 'revolutionary Emperor,' 'philosopher on a throne,' and a ruler ahead of his time, Joseph has also been condemned for being insensitive to the phobias and follies of his subjects, essentially unrealistic, almost utopian, in establishing his goals, and dogmatic and overly precipitous in trying to achieve them. Efforts to analyze and explain the actions of this complex and controversial personality have involved a number of savants in investigations of 'Josephinism' (or as I prefer to call it, 'Josephism'), dealing in great detail with the motiva tions, substance, and influence of his innovations. The roots of Josephism run deep, but can be observed emerging here and there from the intellectual and political soil that nourished them, before joining the central trunk of the system formulated during the latter years of Maria Theresa's reign to grow to an ephemeral and stunted maturity under Joseph II. 360 pp. Englisch.

These publications on the foundations of mathematies as a whole are rather difficult for the beginners or refer the reader to other handbooks and various pieeemeal eontribu tions and also sometimes to largely conceived 'mathematical fol klore' of unpublished results. As distinct from these, the present book is as easy as possible systematic exposition of the now classical results in the foundations of mathematics. Henee the book may be useful especially for those readers who want to have all the proofs carried out in full and all the concepts explained in detail. In this sense the book is self-contained. The reader's ability to guess is not assumed, and the author's ambition was to reduce the use of sueh words as evident and obvious in proofs to aminimum. This is why the book, it is believed, may be helpful in teaehing or learning the foundation of mathematics in those situations in which the student cannot refer to a parallel lecture on the subject. This is also the reason that I do not insert in the book the last results and the most modem and fashionable approaches to the subjeet, which does not enrich the essential knowledge in founda tions but ean discourage the beginner by their abstract form. Neuware -The present text is a rational analysis of the concept of the chemical bond by means of the principles of wave mechanics. This section can only be fully appreciated by those readers who are familiar with some aspects of the algorithms used in quantum mechanics.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 126 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The Institute of Ecology (TIE) was organized to provide a mech anism for addressing ecological and environmental issues that were beyond the special interests of ecology as a profession.
