The conference was organized by the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the University of Bonn under the auspices of the Sonderforschungs bereich 72. It took place in the Physikzentrum in Bad Honnef near to Bonn from May 3 - May 7, 1982. The idea of the organizers was to bring together experts who work on very related problems, but partially by using different approaches. The main subjects of the program were: - mathematical learning models, - bandit problems, - stochastic approximation procedures, - sequential decision processes with unknown law of nature. We felt that in a sense 'learning' was a common concept for all these branches. In the contributions the state of the art in the above topics was presented from different pOints of view with special regard to recent advances. The exchange of results and opinions was continued in many fruitful and vivid discussions. The atmosphere of the conference center offered a suitable and pleasant framework for the scientific program. We express our gratitude to all contributors for making the con ference successful. Infallibility is a characteristic, not of the objects which we perceive, but rather of the acts by which we perceive them. And this permits an object of such awareness to be either material or something other than material. It does not fol low from the fact of infallibility that the objects of awareness must be other than material objects. And, finally, the fact of translatability shows at most that we either can or must simultaneously perceive material objects and entities which are not material objects. It does not show that the perception of the one is the same as the perception of the other. Classical hydrodynamics is largely concerned with perfect fluids which unfortunately exert no forces on the particles past which they move. Practical approaches to subjects like fluidization, sedimentation, and flow through porous media abound in much useful but uncorrelated empirical information. The present book represents an attempt to bridge this gap by providing at least the beginnings of a rational approach to fluid particle dynamics, based on first principles. From the pedagogic viewpoint it seems worthwhile to show that the Navier-Stokes equations, which form the basis of all systematic texts, can be employed for useful practical applications beyond the elementary problems of laminar flow in pipes and Stokes law for the motion of a single particle. Although a suspension may often be viewed as a continuum for practical purposes, it really consists of a discrete collection of particles immersed in an essentially continuous fluid. The authors propose a thesis about the social direction of scientific research which was the occasion of a lively and often bitter debate in Germany from 1976 to 1982. Their provocative thesis, briefly, is this: that modern science converges, historically, to the development of a number of 'closed theories', i. e. stable and relatively completed sciences, no longer to be improved by small changes but only by major changes in an entire theoretical structure. Further: that at such a stage of 'mature theory', the formerly viable norm of intra-scientific autonomy may appropriately be replaced by the social direction' of further scientific research (within such a 'mature' field) for socially relevant or, we may bluntly say, 'task-oriented' purposes. In no part of the body was the impact of CT as profound as it was in the retroperitoneum. In the pre-CT area this region of the body could not be directly studied and only when gross abnormalities were present could they be appreciated. The best we could do was to try to identify a suspected process by studying its effect on surrounding organs whose position might have been affected by the growth. Urography, barium studies or angiography were employed in the hope that variation in the position of the vessels, ureter or bowel would lead us to the correct diagnosis. With computed tomography all this changed. Modern scanners, available to all today, permit us to appreciate details undreamed of only few years ago. The abundance of fat in this region helps to clearly show even the smallest of structures. We now have the ability to recognize small vessels, lymph nodes and fascial planes. We had a tool which permitted us to study structures which hitherto were only seen by the anatomist or during surgical dissection.

The scientific, economic, and social im portance of weather events on the scales of 10-1000 km is not a new discovery, but only recently have the weather services, research laboratories, and academic scientists of the world begun to concen trate attention on these phenomena. An Advanced Study Institute was organized by the present editors to provide a focus and forum for review and dissemination of the current state of basic and ap plied research across the broad and somewhat indefinite span (see Emanuel's first paper for one version) of this subject. We believe this objective was largely fulfilled, although not all relevant subjects were given attention equal to their perceived significance. The smaller and more intense mesoscale phenomena, especially con vective clouds and storms, were excellently treated from a variety of viewpoints, while the important area of regional scale simula tion and prediction received less emphasis. A fascinating discus sion and mathematical treatment of a seemingly obscure cloud phe nomena in Australia, the 'morning glory', suggests that it may have much more generality and importance than is first apparent. 'Meteoric bodies' are usually defined as cosmic bodies observed by optical or radar techniques, when they enter the atmosphere. The limiting sensitivity of present-day radar equipment makes it possible to record meteors of up to stellar magnitude +14, while the most brilliant bolides may reach magnitude -19. On a mass 7 7 scale this corresponds approximately to a range of 10- to 10 g. How ever, met~or astronomy is also concerned with larger objects, namely crater-forming meteorites, or objects that cause large-scale destruction when they arrive through the atmosphere (an example is the Tunguska River meteorite). On the other hand, scientists studying fragmentation processes in meteoric bod 7 ies have to consider particles with masses less than 10- g, and the use of data from meteoric-particle counters on rockets and artificial satel lites, from microcraters on the lunar surface, and from noctilucent clouds 12 lowers the minimum mass to 10- g. Therefore, the mass range of meteoric bodies, or meteoroids, encompasses 24 orders of magnitude. Die psychologische Perspektive gerat in der Krankengeschichte wie auch in der Arzt-Patient-Beziehung immer mehr in eine Randstellung. Mit be rechtigter Kritik hat man von der modernen Medizin als einersprachlosen Medizin gesprochen. Die publizistisch oft beschworene Nutzung der Arzt-Patient-Bezie hung und einer Integration der Psychotherapie in die Medizin ist vorerst jedenfalls noch eine Utopie, kein verwirklichtes Konzept. Die Verfasser dieses Buches sehen diese Entwicklung mit Sorge und mochten ihr entgegentreten. Die Erzeugung (und entspre chend der Verbrauch, der mit der Erzeugung, bei Fehlen aller Möglichkeiten nen nenswerter Energiespeicherung identisch ist) von elektrischer Energie steigt in ei ner logarithmischen Progression fast geradlinig von 1920 bis 1980 an und hat sich in der Bundesrepublik in diesen 60 Jahren rund auf das 20fache, oder um rund 7070 pro Jahr, gesteigert, was einer Verdoppelungszeit von etwa 10 Jahren ent spricht. Eine solche Situation macht es verständlich, daß insbesondere das Pro blem der Energieübertragung dringend wird. Energie ist im elektrotechnischen Maßsystem bekanntlich 2 W = 1 . U = 1 ¿ R, und das bedeutet, daß die energieübermittelnde Stromstärke bei linearer Energie zunahme quadratisch anwächst. Hat also die Energie-Übermittlung vom Erzeu ger zum Verbraucher auf das 20fache zugenommen, so würde das eine durch schnittliche Steigerung der übermittelnden Stromstärken auf das 400fache bedeu ten, wenn die treibende Spannung dieselbe bliebe. Das hinwiederum bedeutet enorm steigende Leitungsquerschnitte, um die Verlustspannung erträglich zu hal ten, die proportional I R ist, also in unserem Beispiel auf das 400fache anwach sen müßte, wenn man R, also den Querschnitt der Leitung, nicht entsprechend vergrößern würde. Diese mit steigender Energieentnahme unvermeidlichen Verluste machen die Übertragung großer Energiemengen über weite Entfernungen nur dann wirt schaftlich, wenn man möglichst hohe Übertragungsspannungen benutzt.
