In 36 Jahren sind ll Auflagen des Hammarstenschen Lehrbuches erschienen. Sie spiegeln die Entwicklung der Physiologischen Chemie wieder und haben gleichzeitig deren Werdegang maßgeblich beeinflußt; denn der 'Hammarsten' wurde in dieser Zeit zum Standardwerk der Physiologischen Chemie in der Welt literatur, zu einem nie irrenden Berater und einem streng auswählenden und wertenden Richter der Ergebnisse der physiologisch-chemischen Forschung. Kein Wunder, daß sich dabei der Umfang von 400 auf 800 Seiten, die Zahl der Mit arbeiter auf 4 vermehrte. Ich freue mich, daß von ihnen T. THUNBERG auch an dieser Neubearbeitung mitwirken konnte. 1936 machte mir Dr. FERDINAND SPRINGER den Vorschlag, eine neue Auflage des Werkes zu besorgen. Der zu bearbeitende Stoff war inzwischen unermeßlich gewachsen, so daß eine Fortführung in früherer Anordnung unmöglich erschien. Es war vielmehr neu zu planen und zu ordnen.
