Neuware - Die Bedeutung der Erddrucktheorie, die vor zwei Jahrhunderten aus der Kriegswissenschaft des Festungsbaues herauswuchs, wurde im Laufe der technischen Entwicklung immer groBer. Es stellte sich heraus, daB sie, weit iiber die Bemessung der Stiitzmauer, beim Entwurf jeder Tief baukonstruktion, bei jeder Griindung, bei jedem Tragfahigkeitsproblem usw. eine wesentliche und wichtige Rolle spielt. Bei der Abfassung dieses Buches habe ich dieses Ziel vor Augen gehalten. Aus der auBerordentlich reichen Literatur der Erddrucktheo rien konnten aber selbstredend nur jene Ergebnisse behandelt werden, die sowohl in theoretischer wie auch praktischer Hinsicht gleichfalls hervorzuheben sind. Vollstandigkeit habe ich nicht angestrebt - ich wollte dies auch nicht tun. Das Problem des Erddruckes auf biegsame Spundwande habe ich zum Beispiel nicht erwahnt, zumal die neueste deutsche Fachliteratur auf diesem Gebiet besonders reichhaltig ist. Der Leser wird im Buch alte und neue Erddrucktheorien und -methoden vor finden, die ich mit fachlicher Hingabe, mit viel Kopfzerbrechen, aber auch mit wahrer Freude beschrieben habe; ich trachtete danach, die Ansatze, die theoretischen Grundlagen in einfacher und iibersichtlicher Form zu bringen und den Anwendungsbereich iiberall klar a'Jzugrenzen. An einigen Stellen wurde bisher unveroffentlichtes Material wiedergegeben, In vielen Fallen beabsichtigte ich auch, die praktische Arbeit mit Hille von Tabellen und Diagrammen zu erleichtern.

Different approaches to stability problems had been developed in the different branches of mechanics. In the field of elasticity, it was mainly the so called static method and energy method which were used, while in the field of dynamics it was the kinetic method, which found its perfect expression in the theory of Liapunov. During the last few decades there has been a rapid development in the general theory of stability, stimulated, for example, by the investigations of H. ZIEGLER on elastic systems subject to non-conservative loads, and by the problems arising in aeroelasticity which are closely related to those introduced by ZIEGLER. The need was felt for kinetic methods which could also be used in investigating the stability of deformable systems. Efforts were made to adapt such methods, already known and developed in the stability theory of rigid systems, for application in the stability theory of continuous systems. During the last ten years interest was focused mainly on the application of a generalized Liapunov method to stability problems of continuous systems. All this was done in attempts to unify the various approaches to stability theory. Meanwhile, Russia was the first country to launch the first artificial satellite in 1957 and to obtain from space for the first time spectra of the Earth's atmosphere in the 1960's. New applications of the radiation transfer theory for the atmosphere underlying surface system appeared first in Russia in the 1970's. Direct and in verse problems of the atmospheric optics were then formulated giving the scientific basis for studies of natural resources from space. Since that time new mathematical treatments for the atmospheric correction procedures have been widely developed in Russia, including both analytical and numerical tech niques to simulate spectral, angular, and spatial distributions of the outgoing radiation in visual and infrared regions. Halley's Comet is the brightest periodic comet, and the most famous of the 750 known comets. With its 76-year period, its recent appearance was truly a 'once-in-a-lifetime' observational opportunity. Neuware -Since the Russian edition of this book was published in 1975 many new research works have appeared which have made necessary some additions for the English edition, to reflect progress in molecular developmental genetics. Recent important findings in this field have brought about essential corrections to the concept of genetic regulation of the process of cell differentiation. The discovery of the mosaic structure of a gene prompted the re evaluation of our considerations about the regulation of gene activity in eukaryotes, and the data about transcriptional events during ontogenesis are of great importance as well. Formerly it was generally accepted that a derepression of genes was responsible for cell differentiation in the process of develop ment.
