Neuware -There is significant current interest in new technologies for IC (Integrated Circuit) cooling, driven by the rapid increase in power densities in ICs and the trend towards high-density electronic packaging for applications throughout civilian and military markets. In accordance with Moore's Law, the number of transistors on 6 Intel Pentium microprocessors has increased from 7.5 x10 in 1997 (Pentium II) to 6 55 x10 in 2002 (Pentium 4). Considering the rapid increase in the integration density, thermal management must be well designed to ensure proper functionality of these high-speed, high-power chips. Forced air convection has been traditionally used to remove the heat through a finned heat sink and fan module. 2 Currently, with 82 W power dissipation rate, approximately 62 W/cm heat flux, from a Pentium 4 processor with 3.06 GHz core frequency, the noise generated from high rotating speed fans is approaching the limit of acceptable level for humans. However, the power dissipation from a single cost-performance chip is 2 expected to exceed 100 W/cm by the year 2005, when the air cooling has to be replaced by new cooling technologies. Among alternative cooling methods, the two-phase microchannel heat sink is one of the most promising solutions. ECMI was founded in 1986 in to foster research and education in Mathematics in Industry in Europe order and these biannual conferences are the show case for ECMI's research. It is a pleasure to see that six of the plenary speakers have submitted papers for this volume. Their contributions illustrate the breadth of applica tions and the variety of mathematical and computational techniques that are embraced by ECMI. ECMI is also committed to the education of students and it is encouraging that a number of the papers are given by students. The Wacker Prize, which is offered for a Masters Level thesis on an industrial problem, always attracts excellent entries and this year's winner, Nicole Marheineke, is no exception. This is the first time that an ECMI conference has been held in Eastern Europe and the ECMI Council is very grateful to Professor Andris Buikis and his colleagues in Latvia and Lithuania for the excellent job they have done. Thanks too go to the European Union which supported 30 delegates at this conference via TMR Contract No ERBFMRXCT 97-0117 'Differential Equations in Industry and Commerce'. Neuware -In the 19 years which passed since the first edition was published, several important developments have taken place in the theory of surfaces. The most sensational one concerns the differentiable structure of surfaces. Twenty years ago very little was known about differentiable structures on 4-manifolds, but in the meantime Donaldson on the one hand and Seiberg and Witten on the other hand, have found, inspired by gauge theory, totally new invariants. Strikingly, together with the theory explained in this book these invariants yield a wealth of new results about the differentiable structure of algebraic surfaces. Other developments include the systematic use of nef-divisors (in ac cordance with the progress made in the classification of higher dimensional algebraic varieties), a better understanding of Kahler structures on surfaces, and Reider's new approach to adjoint mappings. All these developments have been incorporated in the present edition, though the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten theory only by way of examples.
