Das Werk ist auch heute noch geeignet, Interesse aus verschiedenen Richtungen her zu erwecken: Nicht nur Psychiatrie, Kunstgeschichte und Ästhetik sind angesprochen, sondern die ganze Breite men schenkundlicher Belange, die sich als 'Anthropologie' vielfältig auffächert. Hans Prinzhorn war es nicht vergönnt, eine weitere Neuauflage selbst zu besorgen. Er erlag all zu früh, im Alter von 47 Jahren, am 14. Juni 1933 einem Typhus. Ein kurzer biographischer Rück blick auf das Leben dieses ungewöhnlichen Mannes, der seine Zeitgenossen faszinierte, mag hier am Platze sein. Geboren am 8.Juni 1886 in Hemer/Westfalen als Sohn eines Papierfabrikanten, studierte er in Tübingen, Leipzig und München zunächst Kunstgeschichte, promovierte 1908 in diesem Fach, erwarb dann in Leipzig, Berlin und London eine Gesangsausbildung. Danach studierte er Medizin, wandte sich der Psychiatrie zu, wurde 1919, aus dem Kriege heimgekehrt, Assistent an der Heidel berger Psychiatrischen Klinik. Der Direktor dieser Klinik, Karl Wilmanns, hatte ihn dafür gewon nen, eine bereits von ihm selbst angelegte kleine Sammlung von bildnerischen Produkten Geistes kranker zu vergrößern und wissenschaftlich zu bearbeiten. Almost five years after unification output in the ex-GDR is back to its 1989 level. Due to a massive intra-German resource transfer consumption per capita in eastern Germany has not fallen as much as output and employment which reduced by one-fifth within three years. Given high West German transfers which represented about 5% of West German GDP and more than 50% of East German GDP the fall of industrial output could have been much stronger than had politically been feasible. Hence structural change necessary for productivity growth was dramatic in the ex-GDR where the goods producing sector (manufacturing, mining, energy and construction) strongly changed its proportions; within four years construction almost doubled, and the share of investment goods production reduced by 10 percentage points between 1990 and 1994 and is now down to 21. 1 %. Mining lost two-thirds of its share in the producing sector which itself was reduced relative to GDP. The share of the services industry increased by 5 percentage points between 1991 and 1994, but with a share of 27. 7% in East Germany's GDP it was still about 9 percentage points lower than in western Germany. However, this view of metal toxicology has expanded in recent years due principally to two advances. There has been a considerable increase in our knowledge of the biochemical effects of metals. In addition, biomarkers of toxicity can now be recognized that identify toxicity at levels of exposure that do not produce overt clinical effects. Thus, the toxicology of metals is now focused on nonclinical events that reflect adverse health effects. This new awareness has produced the challenge of determining the lowest adverse level of exposure. With increasing analytical sensitivity and methodologies to detect small changes at the molecular level, the lowest level of exposure of some toxic metals, like lead, is very small. Indeed, for metals in which there is no biologic requirement, it may be questioned whether there is a level of exposure that does not produce some degree of toxicity. For essential metals, the question is being asked as to the levels at which exposure exceeds biologic require ments and excess exposure becomes toxic. The appropriateness of health decisions and the formation of public policy are dependent on the availability of current scientific information that addresses these questions. Instead of rewriting a second edition, which thirteen years later we would organize in a completely dif ferent way, we have brought each chapter up to date with new material up to 1976. A new update supplement has in this edition been inserted after each one of the original chapters. We have stayed close to the original theme of paleocurrents-how to measure them and how to use them to solve geological problems ranging in scale from the hand specimen to the sedimentary basin and beyond. We have used many annotated references and tables to help pre sent this information to the reader. The reader will note that we have cited a few 1962 references - pUblications that appeared too late to be cited in the original 1963 edition. A few times we have also cited a reference which was included in the first edition. These are marked with an asterisk and hence do not appear in the new lists of references. We have been aided by many. Because of the need created by the length of time that had elapsed since LENDLE'S work, the editorial board requested the rapid ap pearance of this 56th volume, which represents current knowledge of the pharma cology and clinical pharmacology of cardiac glycosides. In order to avoid any delay, numerous authors were invited to contribute because shorter contributions take less time to prepare and are consequently more up-to-date. The disadvantage is that some overlap between certain chapters could not be avoided, despite the editor's efforts. Overlapping can, however, actually be useful, in that differing opinions may be provided and topical issues discussed from varying viewpoints.
