The technical work was divided into three main work packages with one additional work package for miscellaneous topics. The major goals of this project, according to its title, were to develop a set of accurate numerical algorithms (work package 3) and to provide tools to support their implementation by means of an embedding of accurate arithmetic into programming languages (work package 1) and by transform ation techniques which either improve the accuracy of expression evaluation or detect and eliminate presumable deficiencies in accuracy in existing programs (work package 2). A great variety of working papers describing and discussing the results of these work packages have been written during the collaboration of the project. This book (Accurate Numericlll A 19oritltms) mainly summarizes the results of work package 3, carried through by the two partners Karlsruhe University and NAG Oxford under the leadership of the editors and Dr. G. Parallel circular iterations, where the approximations to the zeros have the form of circular regions containing these zeros, are efficient because they also provide error estimates. There are at present no book publications on this topic and one of the aims of this book is to collect most of the algorithms produced in the last 15 years. To decrease the high computational cost of interval methods, several effective iterative processes for the simultaneous inclusion of polynomial zeros which combine the efficiency of ordinary floating-point arithmetic with the accuracy control that may be obtained by the interval methods, are set down, and their computational efficiency is described. The rate of these methods is of interest in designing a package for the simultaneous approximation of polynomial zeros, where automatic procedure selection is desired. Weyl coined the words 'classical groups', foremost in his mind were their connectio…ns with invariant theory, which his famous book helped to revive. Although his approach in that book was deliberately algebraic, his interest in these groups directly derived from his pioneering study of the special case in which the scalars are real or complex numbers, where for the first time he injected Topology into Lie theory. But ever since the definition of Lie groups, the analogy between simple classical groups over finite fields and simple classical groups over IR or C had been observed, even if the concept of 'simplicity' was not quite the same in both cases. With the discovery of the exceptional simple complex Lie algebras by Killing and E. Die während einer Armbewegung auftretenden Be…lastungen und die zu ihrer Überwindung notwendigen Kräfte am Schultergelenk konnten bisher nur für den statischen Fall angegeben werden. Berechnungen zur dynamischen Bela stung fehlen bisher. Die Aufgabenstellung dieser Arbeit ist es, eine elektromyographische Funktionsanalyse der Muskeln der Rotatorenmanschette und des M. biceps brachii am bewegten Schulter gelenk eines gesunden' Kollektivs durchzuführen. Gleichzeitig erfolgten dynamometri sche und goniometrische Messungen zur Berechnung der entwickelten Muskelkraft und zur Messung der dabei erreichten Gelenkstellung. Die Muskelfunktion qualifizierende Elektromyographie und die Kraft quantifizierende Dynamometrie bilden die Vorausset zung für eine physikalische Beschreibung der Funktion der Rotatorenmanschette und der langen Bizepssehne unter dynamischen Bedingungen. Mit Hilfe dieser Normalwerte sollte eine vergleichende Berechnung des Kraft- und Bewegungsverlustes bei Rupturen der Rotatorenmanschette ermöglicht werden. Schließlich soll diese Untersuchung dazu dienen, die biomechanische Funktion der Schult~rmuskulatur weiter aufzuklären und darauf basierend dem Chirurgen Hinweise für eine funktionsgerechte Wiederherstellung der Rotatorenmanschette und der langen Bizepssehne an die Hand zu geben.
