We would like to thank the members of our dissertation committees, Francis X. Diebold, Roberto S. Mariano and Marc Nerlove for their guidance and helpful comments. We received very good comments from Albert Ando, Yin-Wong Cheung, William English, S0ren Johansen, W. Krelle, Bruce Mizrach and seminar participants at the University of Pennsylvania and the XV Simposio de Analisis Econ6mico in Barcelona. Our thanks also to Werner A. MUller of Springer-Verlag for his help. Of course, any remaining errors are ours. We are indebted to Departamento de Trabajo del Gobierno Vasco and the Department of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania for financial support through our graduate studies. The research underlying this work was partially supported by two Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowships. We could not have written this monograph without the support received from our families. Sections wi thin chapters are numbered using roman numerals. References to equations within the same chapter are of the form (11.7) whereas if they correspond to different chapters are (2.1V.4). Neuware -The arrival of the information society in Japan has radically altered the industrial structure, work patterns and cultural values of its society. The innovation and implementation of information technology has accelerated this change and made its effects more profoundly felt. Because of this, there is now a need to widen the debate on human-centred manufacturing systems to include broader issues such as industrial culture, international economies and global knowledge. Human Centred Systems in the Global Economy contains the proceedings of an international workshop held at Tokyo Keizai University which looked at the design of human-centred systems in the context of these technological and social changes. The workshop attracted contributions from internationally known researchers in Europe, Japan, the USA, South East Asia, Eastern Europe and the USSR. The resulting volume is unique in that it addresses the relationship of information technology to Japanese society as a whole, rather than concentrating on technical issues. The papers have been divided into three areas, covering the structure, dimensions, and policies and perspectives of the information society. Specific areas covered include: social and cultural shaping of technology, economic interdependence, technology and knowledge transfer, computer-aided design, management culture and communication technologies. Human Centred Systems in the Global Economy provides a comprehensive assessment of the debates on human-centred systems and will be of interest to people in a wide variety of disciplines including information technology, economic development, management science and related studies of social science and humanities.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 288 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume consists of papers presented at the Fifth International Workshop on Computer Aided Scheduling of Public Transport, which was held in Montreal from August 19th to the 23rd, 1990. Since the first Workshop in Chicago in 1975 the field had matured considerably. In 1975, there were no presentations that described systems which had been implemented and used on a regular basis. By 1980, in Leeds, and certainly by 1983, in Montreal, several systems were in regular use. They were based on both heuristics and mathematical programming techniques. In 1990, there were more than one hundred transit companies using computer-aided scheduling tools in their regular operations. The scope of the Workshop was broadened in 1987, in Hamburg, so that topics related to scheduling may be introduced. We find, for example, in this book several papers on the technology related to the collection of data and/or the data bases required for scheduling and planning activities. 452 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A symposium, 'Perioperative Management of Pacemaker Patients', was held in May 1990 at the Karl-Franzens-Universitat, Landeskrankenhaus Graz, Austria. The purpose of the symposium, organized by the Departments of Anesthesiology and Surgery, was to discuss the current status of permanent pacemaker technology, emerging developments in this field, legal issues, indications and methods for tempor ary perioperative pacing, and the potential for pacemaker malfunction and adverse patient-pacemaker interactions in perioperative and other medical settings. It was hoped that participants would come to some consensus concerning recommendations for satisfactory perioperative management of pacemaker patients. This symposium was probably the fIrst occasion ever that brought together representatives of the pacemaker industry, implanting physicians, and physicians responsible for the management of pacemaker patients in perioperative and other hospital settings to discuss these important matters. Certainly, it was recognized by all who attended that there existed at the time little in the way of substantial knowledge of how to best manage pacemaker patients or patients with possible indications for temporary pacing in 'unique' hospital settings especially with exposure to electroma gnetic and other potential interference, but in the absence of professional persons with direct knowledge of pacemakers and related devices. Much new information was presented and useful ideas exchanged, so that three symposium participants were of the opinion that papers presented at this meeting should be published as a collective work. 172 pp. Englisch.
