Algebras with involution arose first in the study of the so-called .'multiplication algebras of Riemann matrices'. Albert undertook their study at the behest of Lefschetz. He solved the problem of determining these algebras. The problem has an algebraic part and an arithmetic part which can be solved only by determining the finite dimensional simple algebras over an algebraic number field. We are not going to consider the arithmetic part but will be interested only in the algebraic part. In Albert's classical book (1939). both parts are treated. A quick survey of our Table of Contents will indicate the scope of the present volume. The largest part of our book is the fifth chapter which deals with invo- torial rimple algebras of finite dimension over a field. Of particular interest are the Jordan algebras determined by these algebras with involution. Their structure is determined and two important concepts of these algebras with involution are the universal enveloping algebras and the reduced norm. Of great importance is the concept of isotopy. These give rise to wider component ranges involving smaller quantities which, because of increasingly necessary changes in materials and despite higher stocks, still lead to longer throughput times. These trends impose a continuous pressure on businesses to take steps to rationalise both organisational and technical procedures. When considering the introduction of new technology and raw materials or the re-organisation of labour-intensive manufacturing plants, considerable weight has been given up to now to the automation of production processes. As a carrier of information between humans, the problem oriented programming language is designed to express the essence of an algorithm in a way which is un ambiguous and concise as well as independent of (and therefore meaning ful without any reference to) the changing details of computing machine ry. As a carrier of information from man to computer, the language permits the human programmer to express his computational needs in a compact way adapted to the general characteristics of computers, but freed from the burdening details of specific computer facilities. This presupposes the existence of algorithms, or programs, which permit the computer itself to transform efficiently programs written in the problem oriented language into machine programs. Thus the entire computing community profits from the work of the individual programmer. The primary purpose of the Handbook is to present a set of algorithms of broad utility from the domain of numerical mathematics written in the problem oriented language ALGOL 60. Therefore, volumes I a and I b are in a sense supplementary as they serve to introduce this language. Volume I a gives a description of the language proper and of its use for writing correct programs.
