Neuware -This volume is the record and product of the Summer School on the Physics and Mathematics of the Nervous System, held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste from August 21-31, 1973, and jointly organized by the Institute for Information Sciences, University of Tlibingen and by the Centre. The school served to bring biologists, physicists and mathemati cians together to exchange ideas about the nervous system and brain, and also to introduce young scientists to the field. The program, attended by more than a hundred scientists, was interdisciplinary both in character and participation. The primary support for the school was provided by the Volkswagen Foundation of West Germany. We are particularly indebted to Drs. G. Gambke, M. -L Zarnitz, and H. Die Ergebnisse pflegen in der Regel gut zu sein, wenn die Verletzungen rechtzeitig erkannt werden und wenn sofort eine zweckmaI3ige Behandlung ausgefUhrt wird. Dies gilt besonders fUr Be gleitverletzungen der GefaBe und Nerven. Die Behandlung dieser FaIle hat sich im Laufe der vergangenen Jahre vielfach gewandelt. Manche konservative Therapie, wie sie fruher aus gefUhrt wurde, muBte neueren operativen Verfahren weichen. Dadurch konnten verschiedene Behandlungsergebnisse verbessert werden. Um die Ergebnisse der in der Lehrkanzel fUr Unfallchirurgie der I. Chirurgischen Universitatsklinik in Wien behandelten FaIle beurteilen zu kannen, wurden von den beiden Autoren E. Kutscha-Lissberg und R. Rauhs die einschlagigen 200 FaIle der letzten 5 Jahre einer kritischen Analyse unterzogen. Wertvolle diagnostische Hinweise wurden dabei hervorgehoben. Die Indikationsstellung ob konservative oder operative Behandlung wurde besonders herausgearbeitet. Ein weiteres Augenmerk wurde den Komplikationen von seiten der GefaBe und Nerven gewidmet. SchlieI3lich wurden die Behandlungsergebnisse mit exakten Nachunter suchungen und genauen Gelenkmessungen ausfilhrlich geschildert.
