Neuware -An international Summer School on: 'Modular functions of one variable and arithmetical applications' took place at RUCA, Antwerp University, from July 17 to - gust 3, 1972. This book is the first volume (in a series of four) of the Proceedings of the Summer School. It includes the basic course given by A. Ogg, and several other papers with a strong analyt~c flavour. Volume 2 contains the courses of R. P. Langlands (l-adic rep resentations) and P. Deligne (modular schemes - representations of GL ) and papers on related topics. 2 Volume 3 is devoted to p-adic properties of modular forms and applications to l-adic representations and zeta functions. Volume 4 collects various material on elliptic curves, includ ing numerical tables. The School was a NATO Advanced Study Institute, and the orga nizers want to thank NATO for its major subvention. It is intended as an introduction to classical two-valued predicate logic. The restriction to classical logic is not meant to imply that this logic is intrinsically better than other, non-classical logics; however, classical logic is a good introduction to logic because of its simplicity, and a good basis for applications because it is the foundation of classical mathematics, and thus of the exact sciences which are based on it. The book is meant primarily for mathematics students who are already acquainted with some of the fundamental concepts of mathematics, such as that of a group. It should help the reader to see for himself the advantages of a formalisation. The step from the everyday language to a formalised language, which usually creates difficulties, is dis cussed and practised thoroughly. The analysis of the way in which basic mathematical structures are approached in mathematics leads in a natural way to the semantic notion of consequence. One of the substantial achievements of modern logic has been to show that the notion of consequence can be replaced by a provably equivalent notion of derivability which is defined by means of a calculus. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Diese Einfiihrung in die Programmiersprache Fortran N ist entstanden aus mehreren Kursen, die am Rechenzentrum der Universitat Miinster fUr Horer aIler Fakultiiten ab gehalten worden sind. Das Ziel dieser Kurse war es, dem Teilnehmer ein Hilfsmittel in die Hand zu geben, das er unter Umstanden spater fUr seine wissenschaftlichen Aufgaben einsetzen kann. Urn den Kursteilnehmer moglichst gut mit dem neuen ,Handwerkzeug' vertraut zu machen, wurde die Programmiersprache so dargestellt, d~ ein unmittelbares Ausprobieren des gerade erlemten Stoffes auf der Rechenanlage moglich war. Die Sprache Fortran N sollte als 'problemorientierte' Programmiersprache eigentlich unabhiingig von der benutzten Rechenanlage (ffiM 360/50) sein. Bedingt durch den unter schiedlichen Aufbau der Rechenanlagen lassen sich jedoch gewisse Abweichungen in der Programmiersprache bei den einzelnen Herstellerfmnen nicht ganz vermeiden. So kann es sein, d~ einzelne Programme auf einer anderen Rechenanlage eine Fehlermeldung hervorrufen. Anhand der Fehlermeldung l~t sich das Programm dann leicht abiindern. In den Paragraphen 1 und 9 wird die interne Verschliisselung von Zahlen und Zeichen beschrieben. 1m Prinzip gilt die Darstellung fUr aIle Rechenanlagen, ohne Xnderung je doch zur Zeit nur fUr Anlagen der Firmen CII, IBM und Siemens. Ganz bew~t wurde in dieser Einfiihrung darauf verzichtet, aIle Moglichkeiten der Pro grammiersprache Fortran zu beschreiben. Einmal verwirrt die Vielfalt einen Anflinger, zum anderen werden die hier beschriebenen Moglichkeiten ausreichen, urn die am Anfang anfaIlenden Programmieraufgaben zu losen.
