The subject being nearly limitless, only certain selected topics are discussed. These are outlined in the Introduction (Ch. 0). The remainder of the book is divided into three parts. All results of economic significance are contained in Parts II & III. Part I introduces the main tools for the analysis, in particular the concept of an information structure. Although most of the material presented in Part I is not original, it is hoped that the detailed and self-contained exposition will help the reader to understand not only the following pages, but also the existing technical and variegated literature on markets with imperfect information. The mathematical prerequisites needed, but not explained in the text rarely go beyond elementary calculus and probability theory. Whenever more advanced concepts are used, I have made an effort to give an intuitive explanation as well, so that the argument can also be followed on a non-technical level (cf. e.g. the treatment of the 'generic' viewpoint in Ch. 9). In the same spirit, discussion of mathematical assumptions is limited to those which have economic sig- ficance, whereas purely 'technical' assumptions (like differentiability or integrability of certain functions) are usually made without comment whenever convenient. We were encouraged by the good reception our first report met with. Of course, more insight often means more problems. Therefore, this volume contains new results and revisions of matters which previously appeared settled. We are certainly far from 'final answers'. For this reason, differing opinions on some issues are to be found in this book. Moreover, we have refrained from making mathematical symbols uniform to avoid the risk of errors and non-compatibility with the earlier work of an author. The two workshops have stimulated collaboration between participants working in various fields. The final versions of the contributions have already profited from these discussions. We are convinced that they will also influence further investigations. This advancement of our past and future aims is based on the very existence of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies and on the support we have received from its leading members. Scbultz zuerst seine Schüler und dann seine langjährigen Mitarbeiter und haben dazu beigetragen, daß vor allem das Autogene Training praktiziert wurde und die Bedeutung erlangte, die es entsprechend seiner Wirkungsbreite verdient. Die aus der Praxis gesammelten Betrachtungen und Erfahrungen, z. T. über 20 Jahre hinaus, sollen nicht verlorengehen. Sie sollen kritisch gesichtet und anderen Ärzten zugänglich gemacht werden. Das ist die Absicht dieses Buches. Auf diese Weise soll auch ein Teil des Lebenswerkes von J. H.
