This volume presents refereed and revised versionsof 52 papers selected from the contributions of the 16thAnnualConference of the 'German Classification Society'.The papers are organized in three major sections on DataAnalysis and Classification (1), InformationRetrieval,Knowledge Processing and Software (2), Applications andSpecial Topics (3). Moreover, the papers were grouped andordered within the major sections. So, in the first sectionwe find papers on Classification Methods, FuzzyClassification, Multidimensional Scaling, DiscriminantAnalysis and Conceptual Analysis. The second sectioncontains papers on Neural Networks and ComputationalLinguisticsin addition to the mentioned fields. Anessential part of the third section attends to Sequence Dataand Tree Reconstruction as well as Data Analysis andInformatics in Medicine. As special topics the volumepresents applications in Thesauri, Archaeology, MusicalScience and Psychometrics. 532 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The subject of this book is a new direction in the field ofprobability theory and mathematical statistics which can be called 'stability theory': it deals with evaluating the effects of perturbing initial probabilistic models and embraces quite varied subtopics: limit theorems, queueing models, statistical inference, probability metrics, etc. The contributions are original research articles developing new ideas and methods of stability analysis.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 244 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The study of hypersurface quadrilateral singularities can bereduced to the study of elliptic K3 surfaces with a singularfiber of type I \* 0 (superscript \*, subscript 0), andtherefore these notes consider, besides the topics of thetitle, such K3 surfaces too.The combinations of rational double points that can occur onfibers in the semi-universal deformations of quadrilateralsingularities are examined, to show that the possiblecombinations can be described by a certain law from theviewpoint of Dynkin graphs. This is equivalent to sayingthat the possible combinations of singular fibers inelliptic K3 surfaces with a singular fiber of type I \* 0(superscript \*, subscript 0) can be described by a certainlaw using classical Dynkin graphs appearing in the theoryof semi-simple Lie groups. Further, a similar descriptionfor thecombination of singularities on plane sextic curvesis given. Standard knowledge of algebraic geometry at thelevel of graduate students is expected. A new method basedon graphs will attract attention of researches.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 248 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -This book provides a comprehensive exposition of M-idealtheory, a branch ofgeometric functional analysis whichdeals with certain subspaces of Banach spaces arisingnaturally in many contexts. Starting from the basicdefinitions the authors discuss a number of examples ofM-ideals (e.g. the closed two-sided ideals of C\*-algebras)and develop their general theory. Besides, applications toproblems from a variety of areas including approximationtheory, harmonic analysis, C\*-algebra theory and Banachspace geometry are presented. The book is mainly intended as a reference volume forresearchers working in one of these fields, but it alsoaddresses students at the graduate or postgraduate level. Each of its six chapters is accompanied by aNotes-and-Remarks section which explores furtherramifications of the subject and gives detailed referencesto the literature. An extensive bibliography is included.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 404 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Despite the volume of research carried out into the design of database systems and the design of user interfaces, there is little cross-fertilization between the two areas. The control of user interfaces to database systems is, therefore, significantly less advanced than other aspects of DBMS design. As database functionality is used in a wider range of areas, such as design applications, the suitability of the user interface is becoming increasingly important. It is, therefore, necessary to begin applying the knowledge developed by HCI researchers to the specialised domain of database systems. This volume contains revised papers from the International Workshop on Interfaces to Database Systems, held in Glasgow, 1-3 July 1992. The workshop aimed to develop an interaction between the design of database systems and user interfaces. It discussed both the production of interfaces tailored to particular applications, and also more general systems within which interfaces can be developed. Some of the papers concentrate on usability aspects, some discuss different interface metaphors, whilst others tackle the question of designing a general conceptual model. The latter topic is of particular importance, as it is only by achieving an abstract model of what the user understands to be in the database that the data can be associated with appropriate interface facilities. Among the contents of the volume are: integrated interfaces to publicly available databases; database query interface for medical information systems; an integrated approach to task oriented database retrieval interfaces; GRADI: a graphical database interface for a multimedia DBMS; cognitive view mechanism for multimedia information systems; a graphical schema representation for object oriented databases; a conceptual framework for error analysis in SQL interfaces; a browser for a version entity relationship database. Interfaces to Database Systems (IDS92) is unique in that it brings together a variety of approaches from the database and HCI research communities. It will provide essential reading for researchers of database systems and also industrial developers of DBMS. 480 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the 'Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics and Social Sciences' Meeting held at the Certosa di Pontignano, Siena, on May 27-30, 1991. The Meeting was organized by the National Group 'Modelli Nonlineari in Economia e Dinamiche Complesse' of the Italian Ministery of University and SCientific Research, M.U.RS.T. The aim of the Conference, which followed a previous analogous initiative taking place in the very same Certosa, on January 1988\*, was the one of offering a come together opportunity to economists interested in a new mathematical approach to the modelling of economical processes, through the use of more advanced analytical techniques, and mathematicians acting in the field of global dynamical systems theory and applications. A basiC underlying idea drove the organizers: the necessity of fOCUSing on the use that recent methods and results, as those commonly referred to the overpopularized label of 'Chaotic Dynamics', did find in the social sciences domain; and thus to check their actual relevance in the research program of modelling economic phenomena, in order to individuate and stress promising perspectives, as well as to curb excessive hopes and criticize not infrequent cases where research reduces to mechanical, ad hoc, applications of 'a la mode' techniques. In a word we felt the need of looking about the state of the arts in non-linear systems theory applications to economics and social processes: hence the title of the workshop and the volume. 376 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -This volume - the first of this series dealing with angiosperms - comprises the treatments of 73 families, representing three major blocks of the dicotyledons: magnoliids, centrosperms, and hamamelids. These blocks are generally recognized as subclasses in modern textbooks and works of reference. We consider them a convenient means for structuring the hundreds of di cotyledon families, but are far from taking them at face value for biological, let alone mono phyletic entities. Angiosperm taxa above the rank of family are little consolidated, as is easily seen when comparing various modern classifications. Genera and families, in contrast, are comparatively stable units -and they are important in practical terms. The genus is the taxon most frequently recognized as a distinct entity even by the layman, and generic names provide the key to all in formation available about plants. The family is, as a rule, homogeneous enough to conve niently summarize biological information, yet comprehensive enough to avoid excessive re dundance. The emphasis in this series is, therefore, primarily on families and genera.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 664 pp. Englisch.
