Before 2001, the series was devoted solely to spatial database mana- ment, and called SSD. From 2001, the scope was extended in order to also accommodate temporal database management, in part due to the increasing importance of research that considers spatial and temporal aspects jointly. SSTD2009introducedseveralinnovativeaspectscomparedtopreviousevents. There was a demonstrations track which included ten presentations of systems related to the topics of interest. In addition to that, the event included a poster session with seven presentations of innovative research developed at an early stage. For the rst time in the SSTD series, the best paper of the symposium was awarded and a few high-quality papers were selected and the authors were invited to submit extended versionsof their work to a special issue of the Geo- formatica journal (Springer). BAIL 2008, at which both communities were well represented, succeeded in this regard. The lectures given were evenly divided between app- cations and theory, exposing all conference participants to a broad spectrum of research into problems exhibiting solutions with layers. The Proceedings give a good overview of current research into the theory, app- cation and solution (by both numerical and asymptotic methods) of problems that involve boundaryand interior layers. From the viewpoint of a visualization scientist, we typically collaborate with an application scientist or engineer who needs to visually explore or study an object which is given by a set of sample points, which originally may or may not have been connected by a mesh. At some point, one generally employs low-order piecewise polynomial approximationsof an object, using one or several dependent functions. In order to have an understanding of a higher-dimensional geometrical ¿object¿ or function, ef cient algorithms supporting real-time analysis and manipulation (- tation, zooming) are needed.
