Forthis intensivelywell-studi…edlinear problem there are two main lines of results. The rst line consists of existence and regularity results. Usually the solution exists and ¿gains two orders of differen- ation¿ with respect to the source term. The second line contains comparison type results, namely the property that a positive source term implies that the solution is positive under suitable side constraints such as homogeneous Dirichlet bou- ary conditions. This property is often also called positivity preserving or, simply, maximum principle. These kinds of results hold for general second order elliptic problems, see the books by Gilbarg-Trudinger [198] and Protter-Weinberger [347]. For linear higher order elliptic problems the existence and regularitytype results - main, as one may say, in their full generality whereas comparison type results may fail. Here and in the sequel ¿higher order¿ means order at least four. Most interesting models, however, are nonlinear. By now, the theory of second order elliptic problems is quite well developed for semilinear, quasilinear and even for some fully nonlinear problems. If one looks closely at the tools being used in the proofs, then one nds that many results bene t in some way from the positivity preserving property. They use a battery of different signals that convey plant-relevant info…rmation within plant individuals as well as between plants of the same species or different species. The 13 chapters of this volume discuss all these topics from an ecological perspective. Communication between plants allows them to share physiological and ecological information relevant for their survival and tness. It is obvious that in these very early days of ecological plant communication research we are illuminating only the ¿tip of iceberg¿ of the communicative nature of higher plants. Nevertheless, knowledge on the identity and informative value of volatiles used by plants for communication is increasing with breath-taking speed. Among the most spectacular examples are sit- tions where plant emitters warn neighbours about a danger, increasing their innate immunity, or when herbivore-attacked plants attract the enemies of the herbivores (¿cry for help¿ and ¿plant bodyguards¿ concepts). It is becoming obvious that plants use not only volatile signals but also diverse water soluble molecules, in the case of plant roots, to safeguard their evolutionary success and accomplish self/non-self kin rec- nition. The birth of this system class was initiated by the need of engineers to achieve better performance for nonlinear and time-varying dynamics, c- mon in many industrial applications, than what the classical framework of Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) control can provide. However, it was also a p- mary goal to preserve simplicity and ¿re-use¿ the powerful LTI results by extending them to the LPV case. The progress continued according to this philosophy and LPV control has become a well established eld with many promising applications. Unfortunately, modeling of LPV systems, especially based on measured data (which is called system identi cation) has seen a limited development sincethebirthoftheframework.Currentlythisbottleneck oftheLPVfra- work is halting the transfer of the LPV theory into industrial use. Without good models that ful ll the expectations of the users and without the und- standing how these models correspond to the dynamics of the application, it is di cult to design high performance LPV control solutions. This book aims to bridge the gap between modeling and control by investigating the fundamental questions of LPV modeling and identi cation.
