Only few individuals improve their neighbourhoods when relocating. Conditions in the housing market are important determinants of these changes. Gender inequality persists in the occupational outcomes of relocations in England and West Germany. Due to institutional conditions, residential trajectories in England exhibit more variation and a higher risk of changes for the worse than in Germany. Whereas the first and older one, FORTWIHR, the Bavarian Consortium for High Performance Scientific Com puting, had put its main emphasis on the supercomputing aspect, this new initiative was now expected to focus on the mathematical part. Consequently, throughout all of the five main research topics (A) adaptive materials and thin layers, (B) adaptive materials in medicine, (C) robotics, aeronautics, and automobile technology, (D) microstructured devices and systems, and (E) transport processes in flows, mathematical aspects play a predominant role. The formation of the SFB 438 and its scientific program are inextricably linked with the name of Karl-Heinz Hoffmann. As full professor for applied mathematics in Augsburg (1981-1991) and in Munchen (since 1992) and as dean of the faculty of mathematics at the TV Munchen, he was the driv ing force of this fascinating, but not always easy-to-realize idea of bringing together scientists from mathematics, physics, engineering, informatics, and medicine for joint efforts in modern applied mathematics. Neuware -This volume discusses the photoelectric behavior of three semiconducting thin film materials hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a Si:H), nano porous titanium dioxide, and the fullerene C60. Despite the fundamental structural differences b…etween these materials, their electronic properties are at least on the phenomenological level surprisingly similar, since all three materials have rather low carrier mobilities. In the last decade a Si:H has conquered large market segments in photo voltaics, fiat panel displays and detector applications. It is surely the most advanced and best understood of the three materials. Nano porous Ti02 is used successfully in a novel solar cell featuring an organic dye absorber. This product is now at the brink of commercialization, while electronic applica tions for C60 still appear to be in the exploration phase. At this stage it appears that some of the insight and many of the exper imental techniques used in the development of a Si:H may prove useful in the on going and yet very basic study of TiO2 and C60 thin films. This idea is the guideline to this book. Neuware -With the aim of providing a deeper insight into possible mechanisms of biological self-organization, this thesis presents new approaches to describe the process of self-assembly and the impact of spatial organization on the function of… membrane proteins, from a statistical physics point of view. It focuses on three important scenarios: the assembly of membrane proteins, the collective response of mechanosensitive channels and the function of the twin arginine translocation (Tat) system. Using methods from equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, general conclusions were drawn that demonstrate the importance of the protein-protein interactions. Namely, in the first part a general aggregation dynamics model is formulated, and used to show that fragmentation crucially affects the efficiency of the self-assembly process of proteins. In the second part, by mapping the membrane-mediated forces into a simplified many-body system, the dynamic and equilibrium behaviour of interacting mechanosensitive channels is derived, showing that protein agglomeration strongly impacts its desired function. The final part develops a model that incorporates both the agglomeration and transport function of the Tat system, thereby providing a comprehensive description of this self-organizing process.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 92 pp. Englisch.
