Realizing that the mathematical sciences can be critical to many areas of biomedical imaging, we organized… a three-day minicourse on mathema- cal modelling in biomedical imaging at the Institute Henri Poincar¿einParis in March 2007. Prominent mathematicians and biomedical researchers were paired to review the state-of-the-art in the subject area and to share mat- maticalinsightsregardingfutureresearchdirectionsinthisgrowingdiscipline. The speakers gave presentations on hot topics including electromagnetic brain activity, time-reversal techniques, elasticity imaging, infrared thermal tomography,acoustic radiationforce imaging, electrical impedance and m- netic resonance electrical impedance tomographies. Indeed, they contributed to this volume with original chapters to give a wider audience the bene t of their talks and their thoughts on the eld. This volume is devoted to providing an exposition of the promising - alytical and numerical techniques for solving important biomedical imaging problems and to piquing interest in some of the most challenging issues. We hope that it will stimulate much needed progress in the directions that were described during the course. The biomedical imaging problems addressed in this volume trigger the investigation of interesting and di cult problems in various branches of mathematics including partialdi erential equations, h- monic analysis, complex analysis, numerical analysis, optimization, image analysis, and signal theory. Since more than one decade, Fourier transform has triggered a technical revolution in option pricing theory. Almost all new developed option pricing models, es- cially in connection with stochastic volatility and random jump, have extensively applied Fourier transform and the corresponding inverse transform to express - tion pricing formulas. The large accommodation of the Fourier transform allows for a very convenient modeling with a general class of stochastic processes and d- tributions. This book is then intended to present a comprehensive treatment of the Fourier transform in the option valuation, covering the most stochastic factors such as stochastic volatilities and interest rates, Poisson and Levy ¿ jumps, including some asset classes such as equity, FX and interest rates, and providing numerical ex- ples and prototype programming codes. Neuware -In May 2002 a number of about 20 scientists from various disciplines were invited by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities to participate in an interdisciplinary workshop on structures and structure generating processes. T…he site was the beautiful little castle of Blankensee, south of Berlin. The disciplines represented ranged from mathematics and information theory, over various elds of engineering, biochemistry and biology, to the economic and social sciences. All participants presented talks explaining the nature of structures considered in their elds and the associated procedures of analysis. It soon became evident that the study of structures is indeed a common c- cern of virtually all disciplines. The motivation as well as the methods of analysis, however, differ considerably. In engineering, the generation of artifacts, such as infrastructures or technological processes, are of primary interest. Frequently, the analysis aims there at de ning a simpli ed mathematical model for the optimization of the structures and the structure generating processes. Mathematical or heuristic methods are applied, the latter preferably of the type of biology based evolutionary algorithms. On the other hand, setting up complex technical structures is not pos- ble by such simpli ed model calculations but requires a different and less model but rather knowledge-based type of approach, using empirical rules rather than formal equations. In biochemistry, interest is frequently focussed on the structures of molecules, such as proteins or ribonucleic acids. The classic method of developing and testing several models of a satellite and its subsystems…with the aim to build a pre-flight and finally a flight model is being replaced more and more by a considerably faster and more inexpensive method. The new approach no longer includes functional test models on entire spacecraft level but a system simulation. Thus overall project runtimes can be shortened. But also significantly more complex systems can be managed and success oriented tests on integration and software level can be realized before the launch. Applying modern simulation infrastructures already during spacecraft development phase, enables the consistent functionality checking of all systems both in detail and concerning their interaction. Furthermore, they enable checks of the system's proper functionality, their reliability and safety / redundancy. But also analysis regarding aging and lifetime issues can be performed by simulation. Project-related simulations of operational scenarios, for example with remote sensing satellites, and the checking of different operational modes are of similar importance. On the whole, risk is reduced significantly and the satellite can be produced in a considerably more cost efficient way, with higher quality and in shorter periods of time.
