Neuware -In the first edition of this book, we covered in Chapter 6 and 7 the applications to multidimensional convolutions and DFT's of the transforms which we have introduced, back in 1977, and called polynomial transforms. Since the publication of the first edition of this book, several important new developments concerning the polynomial transforms have taken place, and we have included, in this edition, a discussion of the relationship between DFT and convolution polynomial transform algorithms. This material is covered in Appendix A, along with a presentation of new convolution polynomial transform algorithms and with the application of polynomial transforms to the computation of multidimensional cosine transforms. We have found that the short convolution and polynomial product algorithms of Chap. 3 have been used extensively. This prompted us to include, in this edition, several new one-dimensional and two-dimensional polynomial product algorithms which are listed in Appendix B. Since our book is being used as part of several graduate-level courses taught at various universities, we have added, to this edition, a set of problems which cover Chaps. 2 to 8. Neuware -Those familiar with input-output analysis know well that compilation of input-output tables is a difficult statistical work. The very first input-output tables (e.g. such as those for the United States economy in 1919 and 1929 or for the Federal Republic of Germany in the fifties) were the results of applied economic research. But soon after, official statistical bodies, who understood that input-output tables consistent with national accounts can very much improve the quality of economic statistics, started systematic work in this field. It was also obvious that international exchange of experience can be useful. The two main internatio nal fora in which discussion of input-output compilation took place were the international input-out put conferences and United Nations bodies. Already at the First International Conference on Input-Output Techniques (Driebergen 1950) several authors analysed the relations between input-output tables and national accounts. The topic was also on the programme of the Second Conference (Varenna 1954). At the Third Conference (Geneva 1961) standardization of input-output statistics was a topic of a panel discussion of eight experts. Die siebziger Jahre waren durch Anstrengungen gepragt, die Computerleistungen dezentral am Arbeitsplatz zur VerfUgung zu stellen und damit ehemals ausgelager te F unktionen zumindest zum Teil wieder in die F achabteilungen zu reintegrieren. Neue EDV-Anwendungen wurden nun unter der Mitverantwortung der Fachabtei lung en entwickelt und teilweise auch von dort betrieben. Zunehmend wurden auch planerische Aufgabenstellungen durch den Rechner unterstLitzt.
