It is the third in a series which started two years ago in Helsinki and which last year took place in Brighton. Thanks to the European Neural Network Society, ICANN has emerged as the leading conference on neural networks in Europe. Neural networks is a field of research which has enjoyed a rapid expansion and great popularity in both the academic and industrial research communities. The field is motivated by the commonly held belief that applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics will benefit from a good understanding of the neural information processing properties that underlie human intelligence. Essential aspects of neural information processing are highly parallel execution of com putation, integration of memory and process, and robustness against fluctuations. It is believed that intelligent skills, such as perception, motion and cognition, can be easier realized in neuro-computers than in a conventional computing paradigm. This requires active research in neurobiology to extract com putational principles from experimental neurobiological find ings, in physics and mathematics to study the relation between architecture and function in neural networks, and in cognitive science to study higher brain functions, such as language and reasoning. Neural networks technology has already lead to practical methods that solve real problems in a wide area of industrial applications. The clusters on robotics and applications contain sessions on various sub-topics in these fields. 1124 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS covers all aspects of these diseases with extensive inclusion of dermatological conditions. The multiple choice questions and answers have been compiled by a highly experienced group of clinicians and researchers from two major STD/AIDS centres in the UK. These MCQs aim to help readers learn in an easy, effective and enjoyable way. The book is intended to make them think, to test themselves and check the standard of their knowledge in order to pass exams as well as to improve their clinical practice for their patients. It will be of use to all those in training in sexually transmitted diseases, doctors and nurses alike. The questions have been refined by representatives of these groups to provide interesting questions to test knowledge to different standards, whether to satisfy their own curiosity or their examiners'. It will be particularly helpful to those sitting examinations such as MRCP, MBBS, DipGUM as well as those attending specialist STD or AIDS courses. 204 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume contains the proceedings of the fIrst workshop held by the Theory and Formal Methods Section ofthe Imperial College Department of Computing. It contains papers from almost every member of the Section, from our long-term academic visitors, and from those who have recently left us. The papers fall into four broad areas: - semantics - concurrency - logic - specification with some papers spanning a number of disciplines. The subject material varies from work on mathematical foundations to practical applications of this theory, expressing the Section's commitment to both the foundations of computer science, and the application of theory to real computing problems. In preparing the workshop and these proceedings, care was taken to ensure that there were papers overviewing a field, as well as ones whose primary aim was to present new scientifIc results. This had a dual purpose: to bring our Section members up to speed in some of the areas being worked on by the Section; and to provide the reader of the proceedings not only with a good introduction to many of the specifIc areas being investigated by the Section, but also with details of some of our latest results. All the papers presented at the workshop were revised following comments made by the workshop participants, and all were subsequently reviewed by at least two people before producing the fInal versions contained in this volume. 340 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is the product of a 15-month intensive investigation of the European artificial network scene, together with a view of the broader framework of the subject in a world context. It could not have been completed in such a remarkably short time, and so effectively, without the dedicated efforts of Louise Turner, the DEANNA secretary, and Geoff Chappell, the DEANNA researcher, at the Centre for Neural Networks, King's College, London. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their heroic efforts. I would also like to thank my colleagues in the Centre and in the Mathematics Department, especially Mark Plumbley, Michael Reiss and Trevor Clarkson for all their help and encouragement, Denise Gorse of University College London, for allowing use of her lecture notes as a basis for the tutorial and the DEANNA partners for the part they played. Finally I would like to acknowledge the European Community support, and especially Mike Coyle for his trenchant comments during the carrying out of the work. Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 272 pp. Deutsch.
