The title of this Symposium differed from that of the previous four by the addition of the word 'Imaging,' reflecting an increase in emphasis on nonholographic methods of acoustical visualization. For convenience, no change has been made in the title of this published series. The 42 Symposium papers cover a wide range of theoreti cal and applied topics, and effectively define the state-of the-art in this rapidly developing field. Many of them relate to applications of acoustic visualization in such diverse fields as nondestructive testing, medical diagnosis, microscopy, underwater viewing, and seismic mapping. The papers presented at the Symposium were selected with considerable assistance from the Program Committee. It was attended by 192 delegates from 24 countries who were accompanied by 43 members of their families. Eleven invited papers were read and 96 contributed papers; the contributed papers were in two parallel sessions. The Conference included the topics of the two International Conferences held in France in 1972, in Paris and at Ste Maxime. The Conference brought together workers concerned with many aspects of phonon scattering in solids and liquid helium. Some of the work reported were studies of the intrinsic properties of diel ectric materials such as the effects of anharmonicity, dispersion and anisotropy on phonon propagation and the conditions for the existence of zero sound and second sound modes. Work was also pres ented on various aspects of phonon interaction with free electrons in metals and semiconductors. A substantial part of the Conference was devoted to phonon spectroscopy - investigations of the energy levels of ions or neutral impurities by observing the resonant absorp tion or scattering of phonons. The materials being studied include paramagnetic and parae1ectric solids, amorphous systems in which the 'impurities' appear to be intrinsic, and semiconductors. Work was reported on the use of phonons to observe phase transitions; in some cases the cooperative phase also arises through strong spin phonon coupling. One of the intriguing unsolved problems discussed in detail at the Conference is the Kapitza conductance problem. 464 pp. Englisch.

The reasons for this are obvious when one considers the world's energy problems and the need for new and less energy demanding syntheses of important chemicals. Heterogeneous catalysis has played a major industrial role; however, such reactions are generally not selective and are exceedingly difficult to study. Homogeneous catalysis suffers from on-site engineering difficulties; however, such reactions usually provide the desired selectivity. For example, Monsanto's synthesis of optically-active amino acids employs a chiral homogeneous rhodium diphosphine catalyst. Industrial uses of homogeneous catalyst systems are increasing. It is not by accident that many homogeneous catalysts contain tertiary phosphine ligands. These ligands possess the correct steric and electronic properties that are necessary for catalytic reactivity and selectivity. This point will be emphasized throughout the book. Thus the stage is set for a comprehensive be treatment of the many ways in which phosphine catalyst systems can designed, synthesized, and studied. 508 pp. Englisch.

We noted in 1974 that virology as a discipline had passed through its descriptive and phenomenological phases and was joining the molecular biology rev olution. The volumes published to date were meant to serve as an in depth analysis and standard reference of the evolving field of virology. We felt that viruses as biological entities had to be considered in the context of the broader fields of molecular and cellular biology. In fact, we felt then, and feel even more strongly now, that viruses, being simpler biological models, could serve as valuable probes for investigating the biology of the far more complex host cell. During the decade-long compilation of a series of books like Com prehensive Virology, some of the coverage will obviously not remain up to-date. The usual remedy to this aspect of science publishing is to pro duce a second edition. However, in view of the enormous increase in knowledge about viruses, we felt that a new approach was needed in covering virology in the 1980s and 1990s. Thus we decided to abandon the somewhat arbitrary subgrouping of the subject matter under the titles Reproduction, Structure and Assembly, Regulation and Genetics, Addi tional Topics, and Virus-Host Interactions. Instead we have organized a new series entitled The Viruses. 464 pp. Englisch.

Besides food, mother's milk gives an orchestra of complex interacting bacteriostatic, bactericidal and anti-viral substances which contribute to the establishment of the normal intestinal flora. These mechanisms probably explain the many reports that breast fed babies get fewer infections than those fed artificially; deprivation from this effect of artificial feeding can be devastating in developing countries, with limited hygienic facilities, bad water supplies and sanitation. Infection is also more frequent in artificially fed infants in developed countries. Ingesting antigens is an important step in initiating the immune response, but the reSponse to such antigens is a controlled one, and besides antibody and cell mediated responses, partial tolerance, and immune exclusion (reduction of subsequent entry of antigen) occur. It is likely that food allergy, grossly neglected until recently, arises from disturbance of such mechanisms in the genetically vulnerable (immunodeficient) child. 164 pp. Englisch.

The lone overnight flight of a ruby-throated hummingbird across the Gulf of Mexico is a migratory behavior mediated through an incredibly lengthy, repetitive series of wing move ments, each movement being produced by a complex sequence of muscle contrac tions. It is significant that these same movements may be used to mediate other behaviors, and that these same muscle contractions, in different sequence, may be used to produce other movements. The immense journey of white-bearded gnus across the Serengeti plains to suitable calving grounds is likewise a migratory behavior mediated through rather more varied, yet repetitive, limb movements, each produced by a complex sequence of muscle contractions. Again, these same movements may be used to mediate other behaviors, and again, the details of each limb movement may be varied through variations in the strength and the sequence of muscle contractions. A laboratory rat may learn to perform an escape behavior in a shuttle box, bringing its performance to a high level of efficiency by modifying its movement on successive trials. After intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital sodium in an amount sufficient to render the animal severely incoordinated, the escape behavior is still performed, albeit through a different sequence of move ments, even to 'rolling' out of the compartment in response to the warning signal. 660 pp. Englisch.

This symposium was sponsored by IBM Germany and was held September 17-19, 1979, in Bad Neuenahr, West Germany. According to Graham Richards [Nature 278, 507 (1979)] the 'Third Age of Quantum Chemistry' has started-;-where the results of quantum chemical calculations have become so accurate and reliable that they can guide the experimentalists in their search for the unknown. The particular example highlighted by Richards was the suc cessful prediction and subsequent identification of the relative energies, transition probabilities and geometries of the lowest triplet states of acetylene. The theoretical predictions were based chiefly upon the work of three groups: Kammer [Chern. Phys. Lett. ~, 529 (1970)] had made qualitatively correct predictions; Demoulin [Chern. Phys. 11, 329 (1975)] had calculated the potential energy curves for the two lowest triplet states (3 and 3 ) of B A acetylene; and Wetmore and Schaefer III [J. Chern. Phys. ~~ 1648 (1978)] had determined the geometries of the cis (3B and ~A ) and the trans (3B and 3A ) isomers of these two sta~es. Inua 2 2 guided search, Wendt, Hunziker and Hippler [J. Chern. PHys. 70, 4044 (1979)] succeeded in finding the predicted near infrared absorption of the cis triplet acetylene (no corresponding absorp tion for the trans form was found, which is in agreement with theory), and the resolved structure of the spectrum confirmed the predicted geometries conclusively. 344 pp. Englisch.

In its new look, with Plenum our new publisher, we may hope for a more rapid pre sentation to our audience of the contents for their consi deration; the contents themselves, however, are motivated from the same spirit as the first nine volumes, reviews of important developments in both a historical and an anticipa tory vein, interspersed with occasional new contributions that seem to the editors to have more than ephemeral interest. In this volume the articles are representative of the editorial board policy of covering a range of pertinent topics from abstract theory to practice and include reviews of both sorts with a spicing of something new. Conn's review of a conceptual design of a fusion reactor is timely in bringing to the attention of the general nuclear community what is perhaps well known to those working in fusion - that practical fusion reactors are going to require much skillful and complex engineering to make the bright hopes of fusion as the inex haustible energy source bear fruit. Werner's review of nu merical solutions for fission reactor kinetics, while not exactly backward looking, is at least directed to what is now a well established, almost conventional field. Fabic's sum mary of the current loss-of-coolant accident codes is one realisation of the intensity of effort that enables us to call a light water reactor 'conventional. 612 pp. Englisch.

There were seventy participants of whom eighteen were lecturers and members of the advisory committee. All NATO countries except Holland, Iceland and Portugal were re presented. In addition a small number of participants came from non-NATO countries Japan, Ireland and Switzerland. An aim of the organising committee was to bring together scientists of wide interests and expertise in the defect structure of insulators and semiconductors. Thus major emphases in the pro gramme concerned the use of spectroscopy and microscopy in revealing the structure of point defects and their aggregates, line defects as well as planar and volume defects. The lectures revealed that in general little is known of the fate of the interstitial in most irradiated solids. Nor are the dynamic properties of defects under stood in sufficient detail that one can state how point defects cluster and eventually become macroscopic defects. Although this book faithfully reproduces the material covered by the invited speakers, it does not really follow the flow of the lectures. This is because it seemed advisable for each lecturer to provide a single self-contained and authoritative manuscript, rather than a series of short articles corresponding to the lectures. 516 pp. Englisch.

In all, a total of 79 lecturers and students attended the meeting: they had diverse backgrounds in chemistry, physics and mathematics. In my proposal to NATO requesting financial support for an Advanced Study Institute, I suggested that molecular physics was facing a qualitatively new experimental situation in which the exploration of previously inaccessible dynamical phenomena would become of increasing importance. At the same time I was aware that in recent years powerful theoretical techniques, that might prove crucial tools for the interpretation of the new experiments, have been developed in mathematics and theoretical physics. The aim of the ASI was to review at an advanced level these recent developments, juxtaposing new theory with new experimental pos sibilities in the hope that the participants in the-Institute would through their subsequent work increase the awareness of the whole molecular theory community of the changing nature of chemical physics. The recent developments in laser spectroscopy, particle scatter ing experiments and molecular beam technology imply that an entirely new class of phenomena involving molecules in gasses and liquids can now be investigated. 576 pp. Englisch.

This meeting has long been a leading forum for acoustic imaging scientists and engineers to meet and exchange ideas from a wide range of disciplines. As evidenced by the diversity of topical groups into which the papers are organized, participants at the meeting and readers of this volume can benefit from developments in medical imaging, materials testing, mathematics, microsocopy and seismic exploration. A common denominator in this field, as its name implies, is the generation, display, manipulation and analysis of images made with mechanical wave energy. Sound waves respond to the elastic properties of the medium through which they propagate, and as such, are capable of characterizing that medium; something that cannot be done by other means. It is astonishing to realize that acoustic wave imaging is commonly performed over about eight decades of frequency, with seismology and microscopy serving as lower and upper bounds, respectively. The physics is the same, but the implementations are quite different and there is much to learn. The conference chairman and editor wishes to express his appreciation to those who helped run the symposium - namely the Technical Review COIIII1ttee and Session Cbair:aen including Floyd Dunn, Gordon S. 676 pp. Englisch.

These effects are both classical and quantum mechanical in nature and are observed universally in urealu materials. What may at first glance seem a diverse collection of lectures which form the chapters of these proceedings is in fact, an attempt to demon strate the commonality, inter-relationship, and general applica bility of the phenomena of localization, percolation, and macro scopic quantum effects on electrical transport and superconduc tivity in disordered solids. The theory of these phenomena is presented in a complete, yet, self-contained fashion and the inter-relationship between the topics is emphasized. An extensive treatment of experimental results is also included, both those which have stimulated the theory as well as those that have confirmed it. Many of the phenomena investigated in this field also have technological significance. For example, the nature of electronic localization in metals in which one or more dimensions are con strained is very important when one attempts to predict the be havior of the metallic interconnects in ultra-miniature circuits. 480 pp. Englisch.

The existence of re ceptor substances on the surface of cells that recognize and bind to extracellular molecules was proposed at the beginning of the century by the pharmacologist and immunologist Paul Ehrlich and the physiologist J. N. Langley. Since then, receptors have been found to play an important role in numerous physiological and pathological processes. Over the years many attempts have been made to physically isolate and chemically characterize receptors, but because of the receptors' extremely low concentration and membrane localization, these ef forts have met with limited success. Yet, despite the failure to characterize receptor substances, the concept of the presence of such molecules has had considerable heuristic value. Using pharmacological, physiological, and im munologic approaches, researchers have identified several specific receptors, e. g. , a-and ~-adrenergic, nicotinic and muscarinic cholinergic, and histami nergic. With the characterization of various types of receptors on cell mem branes, many drugs were developed that proved to be experimentally and ther apeutically useful. It was only in the early 1970s that methods for the specific measurement, chemical characterization, and physical isolation of cell membrane receptors were developed. These advances were made possible by the availability of ligands with high specific radioactivity that retained their biological activity and of experimental procedures that differentiated between specific and non specific binding of ligands. 696 pp. Englisch.

The school was devoted to the advances, theoretical and experimental, made during the past fifteen years in the physics of nuclear matter under extreme conditions, such as high compression and high temperature. Moie than 300 people had applied for participatio- this demonstrates the tremendous interest in the various subjects presented at the school. Indeed, the topic of this school, namely the Nuclear Equatioo of State, - plays the central role in high energy heavy ion collisions; - contains the intriguing possibilities of various phase transitions (gas - vapor, meson condensation, quark - gluon plasma); - plays an important role in the static and dynamical behavior of stars, especially in supernova explosions and in neutron star stability. The investigation on the nuclear equation of state can only be accomplished in the laboratory by compressing and heating up nuclear matter and the only mechanism known to date to achieve this goal is through shock compression and -heating in violent high energy heavy ion collisions. This key mechanism has been proposed and highly disputed in of high energy heavy ion physics, the early 70's. It plays a central role in the whole field and particularly in our discussions during the two weeks at Peiiiscola. 820 pp. Englisch.

Each speaker presented an in-depth coverage of a topic related to his own area of expertise, including recent findings from his own research laboratory. Following each presentation thet:e was a general discussion of the material by the speaker and the audience. These presentations and the ensuing discussions are summarized in these published Proceedings. Traditionally the Midwest Conferences on Endocrinology and Metabolism have emphasized breadth as well as depth of coverage of the selected topic; the present Conference is no exception. Perusal of the titles of the presentations will reveal that the Conference dea1th with many different facets of the renin-angiotensin system, including the biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, and comparative endocrinology of this hormonal system, plus special areas of con sideration such as angiotensin receptors, angiotensin-converting enzyme, the control of renin release, angiotensin and aldosterone secretion, and the role of the renin-angiotensin system in the central nervous system. The selection of the renin-angiotensin system as the topic for the present conference was very timely because of the many noteworthy advances in this area in recent years, many by the participants in the Conference. The Editors are very appreciative of the excellent manuscripts which the speakers provided for these Proceedings. 320 pp. Englisch.

Although we were aware that various col leagues were working on ecological problems in reservoir tailwaters, we did not fully comprehend the magnitude of worldwide stream regu lation nor the extent of interest in the subject. Such revelations are reflected in the 21 papers included in this book. The authors have summarized current understanding of the ecology of regulated streams and attempted to convey the importance and direction of future scientific investigations in stream ecosystems altered by upstream impoundments. The First International Symposium on Regulated Streams was the plenary event at the 27th annual meeting of the North American Benthological Society, April 18-20, 1979, in Erie, Pennsylvania. More than 500 colleagues attended. We gratefully acknowledge the support granted by the National Science Foundation; these funds permitted intellectual exchange between scientists from eight coun tries on four continents. We extend personal thanks to Dr. K. W. Stewart, President of NABS, and the NABS Program Committee, including Drs. E. C. Masteller, E. R. Brezina, and W. P. Kovalak. These individuals and other officers and members of the Executive Committee assisted us with the many details leading to organization and staging of a scientific forum. Discussions with Dr. John Cairns, Jr. and Dr. G. Richard Marzolf during the early planning stage were most helpful. 428 pp. Englisch.

A few are published here for the first time. None has been taken from one of my books. A would-be reader would have to go to much trouble to find them; that is the reason for bringing them together. Collections of essays are frequently miscellanies. This one is not. Except for the final two chapters, all deal with some aspect of the American political system. Some have to do with the structure and functioning of the federal system, others with the nature of publi(}-and incidentally other-organization, and still others with the causes and supposed cures of the social problems that government is nowadays expected to solve or cope with. The two final chapters are about the relationship between economics and political science; for lack of a better term they may be methodological. 372 pp. Englisch.

An ab stracted bibliography is a comprehensive abstracted bibliography focusing on the reactions and coping mechanisms of children and adolescents to the death of parents, siblings, friends, teachers, pets or even presidents. Publication~ dealing with both normative and pathological stages of bereavement are reviewed. Materials covering childhood concepts/attitudes toward death are included. Citations appear which explore child death education/counseling issues for parents and educators when they involve actual or antic ipated death. Articles are reviewed which deal with the importance of the adult role in the mourning process of the child. For example, decisions such as whether a child should attend a funeral or return to school are examined. Publications are included which explore the short and l'ong term developmental consequences of childhood death experience. It is important to note that the topic of the dying child was excluded. The Bereaved Child contains over 550 citations in author alphabetized and abstracted form. Only English-written books and periodicals are represented. A quick glance will reveal that the bulk of the material is post-1960. This reflects the recency of in terest and study in the area of childhood bereavement. Literature across multiple disciplines was scanned and included. Psychology, medicine, social work, and education are heavily represented, while no theological, literary, or popular sources were examined. 296 pp. Englisch.

The countries represented were: Algeria. Canada. Chile. China. Czechoslovakia. Denmark. France. the Federal Republic of Germany. Greece. Holland. India. Italy. Pakistan. Peru. Poland. Sweden. Switzerland. Turkey. the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. the United Kingdom. and the United States of America. The School was sponsored by the European Physical Society (EPS). the Italian Ministry of Education (MPI). the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific Research. the Sicilian Regional Government (ERS). and the Weizmann Institute of Science. The new topic discussed in some detail at the School was QCD phenomenology at 200 TeV. This energy frontier represents the goal for subnuclear physics after LHC and sse. The main lecturers were T.D. Lee. L. Cifarelli. Y. Dokshitzer and A. Ringwald. There are two possibilities. one optimistic. the other pessimistic. LHC and SSC can produce remarkable discoveries. In this case. the need to go to higher energies will be obvious. In the pessimistic case. LHC and SSC will produce the strongest evidence for the validity of the Standard Model. The need for higher energies will be impelled. In neither case can we wait. If the 200 TeV frontier is to be reached within our lifetime we need to start now: thinking and preparing the tools. Theory and R&D for future detectors are the basic points of the 200 TeV frontier. 492 pp. Englisch.

In my discussions with the chairman, Demosthenes Pappagianis, we agreed that considerable data had accumulated in the almost 20 years since the publication of Marshall Fiese's landmark book, Coccidioidomycosis (Charles C Thomas, Spring field, Ill. , 1958). Pappagianis encouraged me to consider writing a new book. Also about this time, my Stanford colleague Tom Merigan was collaborating in assembling a series of texts on infectious diseases, and he added his encouragement to that of Pappagianis. I planned to enlist the collaboration of my colleagues for the multiauthored work I had conceived to encompass the various facets of coccidioidomycosis. The more I worked, the more I appreciated the effort that had gone into the Fiese book. I hope the final product is a useful, readable, and comprehensive text and reference source for this disease and a worthy successor to the Fiese book. This volume places greater emphasis on the basic science background of present clinical experience and attempts to examine critically the data base and how it fits with recommendations made in the clinical literature. In some of the contributed chapters, I made virtually no changes; in others, I battered them to fit my preconceptions. 300 pp. Englisch.

The present volume collects lecture notes on the session which was devoted to'Regular and Chaotic Motions in Dynamlcal Systems. The School was a NATO Advanced Study Institute sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education, the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research and the Regional Sicilian Government. Many of the fundamental problems of this subject go back to Poincare and have been recognized in recent years as being of basic importance in a variety of physical contexts: stability of orbits in accelerators, and in plasma and galactic dynamics, occurrence of chaotic motions in the excitations of solids, etc. This period of intense interest on the part of physicists followed nearly a half a century of neglect in which research in the subject was almost entirely carried out by mathematicians. It is an in dication of the difficulty of some of the problems involved that even after a century we do not have anything like a satisfactory solution. 324 pp. Englisch.

It was attended by 40 participants from 23 insti tutes in 8 countries. The purpose of the course was to review the various aspects of the physics of exotic atoms, with particular emphasis on the re sults obtained in the last two years, i.e., after the first course of the School (Erice, April 24-30, 1977). The course dealt with two main topics, A) Exotic atoms and fundamental interactions and B) Applications to the study of the structure of matter. One of the aims of the course was to offer an opportunity for the exchange of experiences between scientists working in the two fields. In view of this, the lectures in the morning discussed the more general arguments in a common session, whereas the more specialized topics were treated in the afternoon, in two parallel sections. Section A was organized around four main subjects, briefly pos itronium and muonium, quarkonium, baryonium and neutral currents in atomic physics. In addition various progresses were reported in muon and antiproton physics. 416 pp. Englisch.

Many of the techniques are now standardised and are being applied to a wide range of biologically significant problems both in vivo and in vitro. While laser light scattering methods are superior to conventional methods, there was a general reluctance among biologists to adopt them because of the complexity of the physical techniques and the accompanying mathe matical analysis. Consequently valuable opportunities for advancing the understanding of the biological problems were being missed. Advances in the design and commercial availability of standard light scattering instruments, and the availability of standard computer programs, made the more widespread use of these techniques a practical reality for the biologist. While biologists are unable to cope with the complexities of the physical techniques, physicists are generally unaware of the nature and scale of the biological problems. The meeting at Maratea was an attempt to bring these two groups together and provide an impetus for the application of laser light scattering techniques to biology. This volume differs from the three previous proceedings on laser light scattering in the NATO ASI series (B3, B23, B73), in that it has been published in the Life Sciences series rather than the Physics series, reflecting the shift in emphasis from the development of a new technique to its application in biology. 724 pp. Englisch.
