He led the Conformables project at Motorola which researched highly wearable and easy to use devices and applications. He was the Motorola Scientist in Residence at the MIT Media Lab from 2005 - 2007. He is an Adjunct Professor at Florida Atlantic University where he teaches courses in wearable technology and systems. He holds 14 patents in wearable technology. He is currently the Technology Futurist in the Motorola Corporate Technology Office. He has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The term 'Wearable Technology' encompasses a wide spectrum of devices, services and systems for wireless communications and the web. Wearables are by their nature closely associated with the person, and their use generates many social and even legal issues that have little to do with specific technologies. This professional book discusses the characteristics and design elements required for wearable devices and systems to be widely adopted by the mainstream population for use in their everyday lives. It shows how wearables can help people with daily tasks without getting between the user and the task.Moving Wearables into the Mainstream also introduces concepts such as Operational Inertia that form a mindset conducive to designing wearables suitable for broad adoption by consumers. This book provides insight into legal and cultural issues potentially unfamiliar to research engineers, as well as a broad discussion of technologies underlying wearable devices.Moving Wearables into the Mainstream is designed for a professional audience of practitioners and researchers in industry. This volume is also suitable as a secondary advanced-level text or reference book for students in computer science and electrical engineering.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 412 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -An earlier book by Rodrick Wallace entitled Consciousness: A Mathematical Treatment of the Global Neuronal Workspace Model, introduced a formal information-theoretic approach to individual consciousness implementing approaches developed previously by the cognitive scientist Bernard Baars and the philosopher Fred Dretske. This book takes a more formal 'groupoid' perspective and generalizes the results of that book to processes of 'distributed cognition' characteristic of large institutions that can entertain several, sometimes many, simultaneous 'global workspaces' which must compete for resources while communicating and cooperating.Equivalence classes of 'states' produce a network of language-analogs characterizing interacting cognitive modules which entertain multiple workspaces. Equivalence classes of these language-analogs produce dynamical manifolds describing temporal processes carried out by multiple-workspace institutions.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 216 pp. Englisch.

The paramount relevance of such state of matter is - vious, spanning from the basic theoretical model of random systems to the more advanced technical applications. Nevertheless the interpretation and - derstanding of liquid properties remains a challenge in materials science. In the liquid state, the potential and kinetic energies are characterized by similarvalues,differentlyfromthegasorsolid/crystalphases.Thisfundamental physical property prevents a description of the liquid structure independently fromitsdynamics.Theintermolecularforcesandmolecularmotionsarestrictly interconnected, producing the peculiar features of liquid phases. In particular when the intermolecular potential is characterized by speci c features,asanisotropicand/orlong-rangeinteractions,theliquidstateshows- cal dynamic aggregation and structuring phenomena. This is the distinguishing characteristic of complex liquids. Typical examples are the hydrogen-bonded liquids, glass formers, polymers and liquid crystals. Also relatively simple molecular liquids, e.g., CS and benzene, clearly show complex dynamics, 2 evidence of local structuring effects. During the last years, researchers have undertaken a steady effort to improve the knowledge of liquid matter, both from experimental and theoretical points of view. New spectroscopic techniques, based on nonlinear optical phenomena, have been realized and applied to the study of simple molecular liquids. On the other hand, standard experiments have been applied to liquids characterized by particularly complex dynamic processes.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 264 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The continuous quest for weight reduction, especially in ground and air transportation, has catalyzed the de velopment of light metals and alloys. In this search, particular attention is being paid to magnesium, used at present in a diversity of applications, each one exploring a specific range of unique properties. As a result, the magnesium consumption by many important market sectors is growing at an impressive rate exceeding 10% per year. In parallel with the alloy development the search continues for new techniques of converting magnesium into useful products in a safe and effective manner. Magnesium injection molding, commercialized in recent years, represents a modern technology that is clean and safe for workers as well as friendly for an environment. Extensive research, conducted at both the industrial and university levels, indicates that the technique exceeded its initial expectations. While combining key features of a number of processing techniques, magnesium injection molding is emerging as a universal technology, capable of implementing many conventional and novel processing routes. The routes are based on both the semisolid slurry and fully molten alloy with tightly controlled temperature. Despite well-advanced practice, the critical breakthrough is still hindered by slow progress in understanding key mechanisms, controlling the process at stages of slurry preparation and component forming.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 616 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -In addition to domestic animals the earliest records of mankind indicate that slavery, until the use of coal became widespread, has always been a significant aspect, or part, of nearly every society. Consider for example ancient Attica (Greece), in which 115,000 out of a total population of 315,000 were slaves [1]. For the lucky rulers slaves represented power, Joule/second or Watt. On a steady state basis a healthy adult generates about 100 Watts, or 100 J/s, while a highly conditioned endurance athlete can generate about 300 W for perhaps an hour. Today we obtain our energy from fossil fuels, that magical brew of latent-heat chemistry that allows us to run the world without having to rely on people or domestic animal power. We owe much if not all of modern civilization to fossil fuels, no more than stored solar energy, which provide the 40-plus Terawatts that annually powers the 7,000,000,000 people on this planet, with our fossil fuel burn rate growing to accommodate the annual increase of some additional 100,000,000 or so souls. The foundation of modern society is a pile (lake) of priceless, irreplaceable fossil fuel that, by any measure of the energy you get and what you pay, is all intents free, and being virtually free we have and continue to burn our way through it as fast as we possibly can. It is the tragedy of the (fossil fuel) commons.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 572 pp. Englisch.

Interleukins (IL-1a, IL-1ß, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, TNFa), immunophylin and ubiquitin as well as proline rich peptides, comprised of 10-15 amino acids are being produced in N. Supraopticus and N. Paraventricularis and then secreted into neurohypophysis. Along the neurosecretion of the mentioned cytokines, there are other immunomodulators, the primary structure of which had been completely deciphered such as: Immunophyllins, intracellular receptors of immunosuppressors FK506, cyclosporine A., rapamicin. They are peptidyl-prolyl-cis-trans-isomerases. There are novel immunological hypothalamic factors such as ubiquitin, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), as well as Thymosin ß 4(1-39). Neuware -Polarization Effects in Semiconductors: From Ab Initio Theory to Device Applications presents the latest understanding of the solid state physics, electronic implications and practical applications of the unique spontaneous or pyro-electric polarization charge of wurtzite compound semiconductors, and associated piezo-electric effects in strained thin film heterostructures. These heterostructures are used in wide band gap semiconductor based sensors, in addition to various electronic and opto-electronic semiconductor devices. The book covers the ab initio theory of polarization in cubic and hexagonal semiconductors, growth of thin film GaN, GaN/AlGaN GaAlN/ AlGaInN, and other nitrides, and SiC heterostructures. It discusses the effects of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization on band diagrams and electronic properties of abrupt and compositionally graded heterostructures, electronic characterization of polarization-induced charge distributions by scanning-probe spectroscopies, and gauge factors and strain effects. In addition, polarization in extended defects, piezo-electric strain/charge engineering, and application to device design and processing are covered. The effects of polarization on the fundamental electron transport properties, and on the basic optical transitions are described. The crucial role of polarization in devices such as high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is covered. The chapters are authored by professors and researchers in the fields of physics, applied physics and electrical engineering, who worked for 5 years under the 'Polarization Effects in Semiconductors' DOD funded Multi Disciplinary University Research Initiative. This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers working in the field of wide-bandgap semiconductor physics and their device applications. It will also be useful for practicing engineers in the field of wide-bandgap semiconductor device research and development.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 532 pp. Englisch.

With a worldwide increase in an aging population, the practice of medicine is increasingly focused on elderly patients with chronic diseases and episodic acute exacerbations rather than the previous model of acute disease management only. As nephrologists around the world deal with millions of elderly individuals, many of whom are classified as suffering from chronic kidney disease in stages 2¿5, they are, of necessity, practicing geriatrics without specific training or previous exposure in this field. Therefore, most nephrologists, as well as dealing with new types of clinical presentations, and geriatric evaluation tools, will face the difficulties of reaching the treatment targets specific to geriatric patients. These geriatric targets include, in addition to the usual diagnosis and medical or surgical treatment for young adults, the recuperation of the ability to perform activities of daily living, which are often partially or totally lost in renal disease. Apart from these clinical difficulties, physicians will also face enormous ethical challenges. These issues are clearly dealt with by geriatricians and nephrologists. Improvements in care and advancing clinical knowledge will enable us to delineate more clearly those changes that are due to aging as opposed to those changes due to disease. This book provides an important step in further clarifying and quantifying the differences between an aging and a diseased kidney.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 576 pp. Englisch.

Material behaviors at the macroscale level are controlled by their characteristics at lower scale levels. This fact is even more significant for composite materials. As a result, in order to design and analyze composite structures as well as new composite materials, it is necessary to model material behaviors at different length scales and to couple them. This book presents the state of the art in multiscale modeling and simulation techniques for composite materials and structures. It focuses on the structural and functional properties of engineering composites and the sustainable high performance of components and structures. The multiscale techniques can be also applied to nanocomposites which are important application areas in nanotechnology. This book will provide useful information for engineers for better design and analysis of composite structures.
