Neuware - The design and development of electrical devices involves choosing from many possible variants that which is the best or optimum according to one or several criteria. These optimization criteria are usually already clear to the designer at the statement of the design problem. The methods of optimization considered in this book, allow us to sort out variants of the realization of a design on the basis of these criteria and to create the best device in the sense of the set criteria. Optimization of devices is one of the major problems in electrical engi neering that is related to an extensive class of inverse problems including synthesis, diagnostics, fault detection, identification, and some others with common mathematical properties. When designing a device, the engineer ac tually solves inverse problems by defining the device structure and its pa rameters, and then proceeds to deal with the technical specifications followed by the incorporation of his own notions of the best device. Frequently the so lutions obtained are based on intuition and previous experience. New meth ods and approaches discussed in this book will add mathematical rigor to these intuitive notions. By virtue of their urgency inverse problems have been investigated for more than a century. However, general methods for their solution have been developed only recently. An analysis of the scientific literature indicates a steadily growing interest among scientists and engineers in these problems.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Whatever its final readership and impact, we, the Editors, feel this book is im portant. It addresses the realisation that there is a deep and abiding synergy, albeit one only now being properly explored and exploited, between immunol ogy and computational science. This area of intersection we christen in silico immunology. Immunology is an inspiration for computational scientists seek ing practical and philosophical metaphors for their work; but, at the same time, it is itself a biological discipline of such discombobulating complexity that only computational help as different as simulation and data warehousing can make its modern study tractable. Thus immunology both inspires but also requires computational science. This book deals in detail with the three main areas of in silico immunology: theoretical immunology, immunoinformatics, and artificial immune systems. While all of these are now well-established the interactions between the three are only beginning to be developed. It is a truly exciting time to be working in in silicio immunology. We are reaching a critical mass that will enable great strides to be taken and significant achievements to be made. Like David Hume, we may yet come to regret that this book falls still born from the press but we hope not. Hopefully it will instead strike a cord and tap into a burgeoning Zeitgeist ready to capitalise on the remarkable potential that is in silico immunology.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Transport phenomena is used here to describe momentuin, energy, mass, and entropy transfer [1, 2]. It includes thermodynamics, a special case of which is thermosiaiics. Interfacial transport phenomena refers to momentum, energy, mass, and entropy transfer within the immediate neighborhood of a phase interface, including the thermodynamics of the interface. In terms of qualitative physical observations, this is a very old field. Pliny the Elder (Gains Plinius Secundus, 23-79 A. D. ; Pliny [3]) described divers who released small quantities of oil from their mouths, in order to damp capillary ripples on the ocean surface and in this way provide more uniform lighting for their work. Similar stories were retold by Benjamin Franklin, who conducted experiments of his own in England [4]. In terms of analysis, this is a generally young field. Surface thermostat ics developed relatively early, starting with Gibbs [5] and continuing with important contributions by many others (see Chap. 4). Derjaguin and Lan dau [6] and Verwey and Overbeek [7] indicated how London-van der Waals and electrostatic double-layer forces were to be incorporated in continuum mechanics, now often referred to as DLVO theory. But prior to 1960, there were relatively few notable papers concerned with the analysis of dynamic systems. Two stand out in my mind. Boussinesq [8] recognized the surface stress tensor and proposed the constitutive equation that we now refer to as the Boussinesq surface fluid model (Sect. 4. 9. 5).

In fact, measurements provide us the quantitative knowledge about things and phenomena. It is also widely recognized that the measurement result is capable of p- viding only incomplete information about the actual value of the measurand, that is, the quantity being measured. Therefore, a measurement result - comes useful, in any practicalsituation, only if a way is de ned for estimating how incomplete is this information. The more recentdevelopment of measurement science has identi ed in the uncertainty concept the most suitable way to quantify how incomplete is the information provided by a measurement result. However, the problem of how torepresentameasurementresulttogetherwithitsuncertaintyandpropagate measurementuncertaintyisstillanopentopicinthe eldofmetrology, despite many contributions that have been published in the literature over the years. Many problems are in fact still unsolved, starting from the identi cation of the best mathematical approach for representing incomplete knowledge. Currently, measurement uncertainty is treated in a purely probabilistic way, because the Theory of Probability has been considered the only available mathematical theory capable of handling incomplete information. However, this approach has the main drawback of requiring full compensation of any systematic e ect that a ects the measurement process. However, especially in many practical application, the identi cation and compensation of all s- tematic e ects is not always possible or cost e ective. 228 pp. Englisch.

Indeed, we routinely solve problems by striking a balance between contradictory interests, individual desires and material contingencies. This notion of equilibrium was dear to thinkers of the enlightenment, as illustrated by Montesquieu's famous formulation: 'In all magistracies, the greatness of the power must be compensated by the brevity of the duration.'Astonishingly, natural laws are guided by a similar principle. Variational principles have proven to be surprisingly fertile. For example, Fermat used variational methods to demonstrate that light follows the fastest route from one point to another, an idea which came to be known as Fermat's principle, a cornerstone of geometrical optics. Variational Principles in Physics explains variational principles and charts their use throughout modern physics. The heart of the book is devoted to the analytical mechanics of Lagrange and Hamilton, the basic tools of any physicist. Prof. Basdevant also offers simple but rich first impressions of Einstein's General Relativity, Feynman's Quantum Mechanics, and more revealing and amazing interconnections between various fields of physics. 196 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Subsistence intensification, innovation and change have long figured prominently in explanations for the development of social complexity among foragers and horticulturalists, and the rise of chiefly societies and archaic states, yet there is considerable debate over the actual mechanisms that promote these processes. Traditional approaches to the 'intensification question' emphasize population pressure, climate change, bureaucratic management, or even land degradation as prerequisites for the onset of new or changing strategies, or the construction and maintenance of agricultural landscapes. Most often these factors are modeled as external forces outside the realm of human decision-making, but recent archaeological research presents an alternative to this suggesting that subsistence intensification is the result of human driven strategies for power, prestige and status stemming from internal conditions within a group. When responding to environmental adversity, human groups were less frequently the victims, as they have been repeatedly portrayed. Instead human groups were often vigorous actors, responding with resilience, ingenuity, and planning, to flourish or survive within dynamic and sometimes unpredictable social and natural milieux.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 284 pp. Englisch.

More generally we refer to these as relations between mathematics and the extra-mathematical world (some times also called the 'real world') or preferably, according to Henry PoUak, the 'rest of the world'. That applications and modelling have been important themes in mathematics education can be inferred from the wealth of litera ture on these topics, including material generated from a multitude of na tional and international conferences. In particular let us mention firstly the ICMEs (the International Congresses on Mathematical Education), with their regular working or topic groups and lectures on applications and modelling; and secondly the series of ICTMAs (the International Conferences on the Teaching of Mathematical Modelling and Applications) which have been held biennially since 1983. Their Proceedings and Survey Lectures, have addressed the state-of-the-art at the relevant time, and contain many exam ples, studies, conceptual contributions and resources involving relations between the real world and mathematics, for all levels of the educational system. In curricula and textbooks we find today many more references to real world phenomena and problems than, say, twenty years ago. 540 pp. Englisch.
