The topic of this workshop… was: Higgs Particles - Physics Issues and Experimental Searches in High Energy Collisions and it was attended by over forty participants. The concept of Higgs mechanism, like most other scientific ideas, evolved over several years, with many independent and important contribu tions in the sixtees to which Peter Higgs has referred in his historical account in these proceedings. However, it was not until 1967, paraphra sing Weinberg, that 'the right ideas were applied to the right problem'! Higgs mechanism, i.e. spontaneous breaking of local gauge symmetries with scalar particles becoming the longitudinal degrees of freedom of {other wise) massless vector bosons and hence making them massive, is now an integral part of the standard {Glashow-Salam Weinberg) theory of electro weak interactions. Fortunately for us, the structure of the standard theory prevents at least one scalar field from being transformed away. It is not exactly clear what these names signify, particularly in chemical engineering. Some have suggested retreading the old war horse 'Bi…ochemical Engineering' (or was it 'Biomedical Chemical Engineering). In an effort to demonstrate the on-going activities of chemical engineers in the life science area, we accepted the invitation of the Industrial and Engineering Division of the American Chemical Society to organize the 33rd Annual Chemical Engineering Symposium. We decided to call the symposium, Chemical Engineering in Medicine and Biology, and hence avoided the problem of having to decide which 'bio' prefix to use. Many chemical engineers in the academic and industrial world were contacted. From these contacts and a good deal of publicity arose the Symposium. The two-day meeting was held at the University of Cincinnati in the Losantiville Room of the Student Union Building on October 20-21, 1966. Twenty-one papers were presented on topics relating chemical engineering to medicine and biology. Tile papers were representation al of the scope of the activities across the country with presenters coming from Washington, California, Massachusetts, New York, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana and Texas. These self-referent behaviors are social in nature in the s…ense that in large measure, they are the outcomes of pervasive social processes and are themselves major influences on social outcomes. As such, self-referent behaviors have the potential to be sig nificant organizing constructs in the study of the broader field of social psychology. In any case, they are regarded here as of intrinsic interest and are the focus of this volume. Four broad categories of self-referent behaviors are considered with regard to their social bases and conse quences as these are revealed in the social psychological and sociological literature. With appropriate discriminations made within each group ing, the four categories are: self-conceiving, self-evaluating, self-feeling, and self-protective-self-enhancing responses. Following a consideration of the social antecedents and consequences of each category of self referent behaviors, I present a final summary statement that outlines a theoretical model of the additive and interactive social influences on and consequences of the mutually influential self-referent behaviors. The outline of the theoretical model reflects my synthesis of the apparently relevant theoretical and empirical literature and is intended to function as a framework for the orderly incorporation of new theoretical asser tions and more or less apparently relevant empirical associations. 224 pp. Englisch.

These changes, together with epidemic outbreaks related to political and socio-economic instabilities, increase the needs for the development of new, advanced vaccines. In this volume, devoted to the proceedings of the 39th OHOLO Conference, we present some of the recent strategies for the design and production of novel vaccines. The advent of recombinant DNA technology has stimulated the production of several subunit vaccines. In spite of the obvious advantages to this approach, the limited immuno genicity of many subunit candidates has hindered their development. Strategies to enhance the immunogenicity of subunit vaccines is therefore critical. Several approaches toward this goal, including design of novel adjuvants and delivery systems as well as design of advantageous carriers, are presented here. Taken individually, each discipline exposes certain facets of asphaltenes, but each, alone, can never r…eveal asphaltenes from all van tages. Even seemingly narrowly focused issues such as the molecular structures of asphal tenes, or the colloidal structures of asphaltenes require a confluence of many lines of investigation to yield an understanding which differs from truth by diminishing uncer tainty. An holistic treatment of the asphaltenes is a powerful approach to evolve further their understanding. For example, examination of asphaltenes at the highest resolution yields molecular structure. A slight increase in scale probes asphaltene colloidal structure. Weaving together asphaltene studies performed at different length scales results in a fabric which envelops an encompassing vision of asphaltenes. At the same time, the interfaces of these hierarchical studies provide additional constraints on imagination, more than investi gations at individual length scales alone. These considerations shaped the timing, format, and the content of our book. The editors are very appreciative of the diligence and hard work manifest in each of the contributed chapters herein. ER fluids were first investigated 50+ years ago. These fluids…, which change rheology when placed in an electric field, were recognized, from the beginning, for allowing an extremely efficient interface between electrical control and mechanical devices. Critical problems, however, existed with the initial fluids, which prevented them from serious consideration for large-scale applications. While over time some of the critical problems have been solved and activity in ER technology has increased, commercial success has remained elusive. A recent Department of Energy report concluded that a primary reason for the failure to commercialize this promising technology is due to a lack in understanding the physics and chemistry of how the materials work. The goal of the symposium was to address the issue of understanding how ER materials work and how they can be used. Accumulating evidence sug responsible for the regulation gests that, in addition to its role in salt and water metabolism, PRAS may control other physiological functions including neurosecretion, cellular proliferation, hypertrophy and/or differentiation, angiogenesis and gonadal function. At the same time, it is becoming evident that the specialized functions of endocrine glands are not only regulated by trophic hormones but also by locally produced paracrine/autocrine factors. The concept is emerging that tissue PRAS is one such locally active regulatory system. With more and more reproductive and endocrine organs being added to the list of tissues that contain a local tissue PRAS, questions are being raised by the reproductive biologists and endocrinologists as to the role of such systems in the tissues of their interest. On the other hand, the cardiovascular and renovascular physiologists are wondering about the relevance of PRAS in various peripheral tissues compared to those of the classical cardiovascular organs.
