It is aimed at two audiences: on the one hand the computer pr…ofessional who has a good knowledge of Cobol or Fortran but needs convincing that Pascal is worth learning, and on the other hand the amateur computer enthusiast who may have a smattering of Basic or may be an absolute beginner. Its approach is based on two principles that are not always widely recognized. The first is that computing is no longer a specialist subject. In the early days of computing a priesthood arose whose function was to minister to those awesome, and awesomely expensive, machines. Just as in the ancient world, when illiteracy was rife, the scribes formed a priestly caste with special status, so the programmers of yesteryear were regarded with reverence. But times are changing: mass computer literacy is on its way. We find already that when a computer enters a classroom it is not long before the pupils are explaining the finer points of its use to their teacher - for children seem to have greater programming aptitude than adults. This book, it is hoped, is part of that process of education by which the computer is brought down to earth; and therefore it attempts to divest computing of the mystique (and deliberate mystification) that still tends to surround the subject. 340 pp. Englisch.

Mathematical and statistical methods have played an important role in the…development of this field and a large, and sophisticated, literature exists which is concerned with the theory of epidemiological processes in popu lations and the dynamics of epidemie and endemie disease phenomena. Much ofthis literature is, however, rather formal and abstract in character, and the field has tended to become rather detached from its empirical base. Relatively little of the literature, for example, deals with the practical issues which are of major concern to public health workers. Encouragingly, in recent years there are signs of an increased awareness amongst theoreticians of the need to confront predictions with observed epidemiological trends, and to pay elose attention to the biological details of the interaction between host and disease agent. This trend has in part been stimulated by the early work of Ross and Macdonald, on the transmission dynamics of tropical parasitic infections, but a further impetus has been the recent advances made by ecologists in blending theory and observation in the study of plant and animal populations. 384 pp. Englisch.

Yet the genetical study of continuous variation has lagged far behind that of discontinuous variation.… The reason for this situation is basically methodological. Mendel gave us not merely his principles of heredity, but also a method of experiment by which these principles could be tested over a wider range ofliving species, and extended into the elaborate genetical theory of today. The power of this tool is well attested by the speed with which genetics has grown. In less than fifty years, it has not only developed a theoretical structure which is unique in the biological sciences, but has established a union with nuclear cytology so close that the two have become virtually a single science offering us a new approach to problems so diverse as those of evolution, development, disease, cellular chemistry and human welfare. Much of this progress would have been impossible and all would have been slower without the Mendelian method of recognizing and using unit differences in the genetic materials. These great achievements should not, however, blind us to the limitations inherent in the method itself. It depends for its success on the ability to assign the individuals to classes whose clear phenotypic distinctions reveal the underlying genetic differences. 412 pp. Englisch.
