The first, Adult Development: A New Dimension in Psychodynamic Theory and Practice, ar rived to critical acclaim in 1981. It presented a psychodynamic theory of development during the second half of life and a model of normal adult functioning. This book is the logical sequel, expanding and elaborating the original formulations and applying them to the clinical practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Nemiroff and Colarusso demonstrate that these are appropriate techniques for patients in the second half of life, regardless of age. They lay to rest many stereotypes and myths that have long interfered with the dynamic treatment of older patients, and they propose exciting new conceptualizations such as that of adult develop mental arrests. The genetic approach reaches beyond childhood and adolescence and takes on important new meaning by incorporating an adult developmental past that influences both psychopathology and transference. Continued enquiries about the availability of the first edition long after it had gone out of print suggested that it had provided such a source. Any changes to the text are updating of existing practices and knowledge or correction of errors in the original text. The Handbook is still a guide to achieving mastery of the undergraduate curriculum, but over the past five years we have realised the book is also widely used by general practitioners and nurses as well as undergraduate students. It is tempting to enlarge the handbook to encompass all the needs of diverse groups of health personnel, but we have resisted this desire. Over the past two decades, such characterization has led to the development of sensitive assays to screen and exclude contaminated units from blood banks and has recently resulted in the licensing of several RBV vaccines. That more than 200 million people worldwide are chronically infected with RBV, and that they are at a high risk for the development of chronic hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma, still represent formidable problems in our understanding of host-virus relationships on the molecular level. In the absence of a suitable tissue culture system, and with a very limited host range of infection, characterization of RBV on the molecular level has made remarkable progress recently with the advent of genome cloning, sequencing and expression of individual virus genes by recombinant DNA technology.
