We list below some of the key features of the book. Examples and Exercises The exercise sets have been carefully constructed to be of maximum use to the students. With few exceptions we adhere to the following policies. - The section exercises are graded into three consecutive groups: (a) The first exercises are routine, modelled almost exactly on the exam ples; these are intended to give students confidence. (b) Next come exercises that are still based directly on the examples and text but which may have variations of wording or which combine different ideas; these are intended to train students to think for themselves. (c) The last exercises in each set are difficult. These are marked with a star (\*) and some will challenge even the best students. Aseries of international con ferences which started as an informal gathering in London in. 1958 has continued at approximately three-yearly intervals with increasing numbers of participants and more formal organisation, and the proceedings of all but the first have been published. When the preparation of a second edition was suggested to me, I consi dered several questions. ls there still a piace for a comprehensive, clinically orientated book on sarcoidosis Although the reports of the international conferences bring together research reports and some reviews of topics of contemporary interest, they are useful principally to specialists in the sub ject; and, like the original papers scattered through many journals, are not convenient sources of reference for clinicians. Continued enquiries about the availability of the first edition long after it had gone out of print suggested that it had provided such a source. I therefore concluded that a second edition should be prepared, and then had to consider whether, as a physician retired from academic and hospital appointments, I was the right person to undertake the major task of incorporating in it the still-relevant parts of the first edition, the considerable amount of new information that had accumulated since 1967, and a conspectus of current studies. 720 pp. Englisch.

Presently available reading tests provide their users with a plethora of numbers-age levels, percentiles, grade equivalents-but their scientific value is questionable. Nemiroff and Calvin A. Colarusso. The first, Adult Development: A New Dimension in Psychodynamic Theory and Practice, ar rived to critical acclaim…in 1981. It presented a psychodynamic theory of development during the second half of life and a model of normal adult functioning. This book is the logical sequel, expanding and elaborating the original formulations and applying them to the clinical practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Nemiroff and Colarusso demonstrate that these are appropriate techniques for patients in the second half of life, regardless of age. They lay to rest many stereotypes and myths that have long interfered with the dynamic treatment of older patients, and they propose exciting new conceptualizations such as that of adult develop mental arrests. The genetic approach reaches beyond childhood and adolescence and takes on important new meaning by incorporating an adult developmental past that influences both psychopathology and transference. The relationship between theory and therapy is richly demonstrated in the clinical presentations, including ten detailed case histories of pa tients between the ages of 40 and BO. These and other clinical discussions provide ample evidence that a psychodynamic approach that is based on a sound adult developmental psychology can be extraordinarily effective. They also demonstrate both the similarities and differences in working with older versus younger patients. This work is a major contribution in a long-neglected dimension of clinical psychiatry. Over the past two decades, such…characterization has led to the development of sensitive assays to screen and exclude contaminated units from blood banks and has recently resulted in the licensing of several RBV vaccines. That more than 200 million people worldwide are chronically infected with RBV, and that they are at a high risk for the development of chronic hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma, still represent formidable problems in our understanding of host-virus relationships on the molecular level. In the absence of a suitable tissue culture system, and with a very limited host range of infection, characterization of RBV on the molecular level has made remarkable progress recently with the advent of genome cloning, sequencing and expression of individual virus genes by recombinant DNA technology. The presence of hepatitis B-like viruses in an expanding number of animal hosts, and the possibility of virus replication in cells other than hepatocytes, provide great promise that future work will elucidate the molecular mechanisms operative in the various outcomes of RBV infection. 290 pp. Englisch.

An objective of the Workshop was to review some dynamic proper ties of condensed matter that can be studied using neutron spectros copy. A second objective, no less important, was to identify new topics that might be investigated with advanced spallation neutron sources. The twelve lectures reproduced in this volume bear wit ness, largely by themselves, to the success of the Workshop in meet ing these objectives. The many discussions generated by lecturers and participants meant that, in the event, the objectives were in deed amply satisfied. I should like to thank all those who attended the Horkshop for their part in making it so beneficial and rewarding.
