The very talented students, with an ob vious aptitude for mathematics, will rapidly require a course in functions of one real variable, more or less as it is understood by professional is not primarily addressed to them (although mathematicians. This book I hope they will be able to acquire from it a good introduction at an early age). I have not written this course in the style I would use for an advanced monograph, on sophisticated topics. One writes an advanced monograph for oneself, because one wants to give permanent form to one's vision of some beautiful part of mathematics, not otherwise ac cessible, somewhat in the manner of a composer setting down his sym phony in musical notation. This book is written for the students to give them an immediate, and pleasant, access to the subject. I hope that I have struck a proper com promise, between dwelling too much on special details and not giving enough technical exercises, necessary to acquire the desired familiarity with the subject. In any case, certain routine habits of sophisticated mathematicians are unsuitable for a first course. Rigor. This does not mean that so-called rigor has to be abandoned. 752 pp. Englisch.

In addi tion, although there are a few excellent texts on drug metabolism in print, these tend to be earlier publications and hence do not take into account the many recent advances in this area. Our motivations for writing this book therefore arose from the clear need for a recent and cohesive introductory text on this subject, specifically designed to cater for the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Much of the subject matter in this text is derived from various courses on drug metabolism given at the University of Surrey and the University of Glasgow to basic science students in pharmacology, biochemistry, nutrition and nursing studies, to pre-clinical medical students and to under graduate and post-graduate students in toxicology. Therefore, it is our inten tion that this text will serve as a primer in drug metabolism to a variety of students in the life sciences taking courses in this subject. The term 'drug metabolism' in its broadest sense may be considered as the absorption, distribution, biotransformation and excretion of drugs. To cover all these facets of drug metabolism in a single text is a voluminous task and therefore we have focused primarily on the biotransformation aspects of the subject. 308 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -This book is about the drugs used in the treatment and management of rheumatic disorders. The term 'therapeutics' used in the title is intended to mirror the relevance of drugs in the widest sense of the word. Thus, general principles underlying pharmaceutical and pharmacological study have been included together with more clinical matters concerned with applying specific rheumatic problems. The need for another work on rheumatological drugs in itself, as opposed to the different approach intended, was prompted by the ever continuing and bewildering plethora of antirheumatic drugs flooding the market at present. We believe that such a burgeoning of new preparations is welcome in an era when in general there are still no 'cures' available. Moreover, we also feel that a continued update of this rapidly advancing field is essential, not only for its own sake, but also to place it in perspective with itself and with neighbouring fields.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 572 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Preface Adhesion is a phenomenon architects and civil engineers are not very familiar with. In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test. 780 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Separation of the elements of classical mechanics into kinematics and dynamics is an uncommon tutorial approach, but the author uses it to advantage in this two-volume set. Students gain a mastery of kinematics first - a solid foundation for the later study of the free-body formulation of the dynamics problem.A key objective of these volumes, which present a vector treatment of the principles of mechanics, is to help the student gain confidence in transforming problems into appropriate mathematical language that may be manipulated to give useful physical conclusions or specific numerical results. In the first volume, the elements of vector calculus and the matrix algebra are reviewed in appendices. Unusual mathematical topics, such as singularity functions and some elements of tensor analysis, are introduced within the text. A logical and systematic building of well-known kinematic concepts, theorems, and formulas, illustrated by examples and problems, is presented offering insights into both fundamentals and applications. Problems amplify the material and pave the way for advanced study of topics in mechanical design analysis, advanced kinematics of mechanisms and analytical dynamics, mechanical vibrations and controls, and continuum mechanics of solids and fluids.Volume I of Principles of Engineering Mechanics provides the basis for a stimulating and rewarding one-term course for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students specializing in mechanics, engineering science, engineering physics, applied mathematics, materials science, and mechanical, aerospace, and civil engineering. Professionals working in related fields of applied mathematics will find it a practical review and a quick reference for questions involving basic kinematics. 424 pp. Englisch.

The conference was organized under the auspices of the Polish Section of the Bernoulli Society, the Committee of Mathematical Sciences and the Mathematical Institute of the ,Polish Academy of Sciences. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together scientists from vari ous countries working in the diverse areas of statistical sciences but showing great interest in the advances of research on linear inference taken in its broad sense. Thus, the conference programme included ses sions on Gauss-Markov models, robustness, variance components~ experi mental design, multiple comparisons, multivariate models, computational aspects and on some special topics. 38 papers were read within the vari ous sessions and 5 were presented as posters. At the end of the confer ence a lively general discussion session was held. The conference gathered more than ninety participants from 16 countries, representing both parts of Europe, North America and Asia. Judging from opinions expressed by many participants, the conference was quite suc cessful, well contributing to the dissemination of knowledge and the stimulation of research in different areas linked with statistical li near inference. If the conference was really a success, it was due to all its participants who in various ways were devoting their time and efforts to make the conference fruitful and enjoyable. 328 pp. Englisch.

The old Egyptian medical papyri, which date from before 1400 B. C. , contain dozens of examples of such medicinal plants and animal extracts. In the Old Testament of the Bible, we can find references to using oil to soften the skin and sores (Isaiah 1:6), the use of tree leaves for medicine (Ezekiel 47:12) and various medical balms (Jeremiah 8:22). Not all these recipes were effective in curing the ailments for which they were used and sometimes the treatment was worse than the disease. Nevertheless, the art of using chemical derived agents for medicines continued to develop and received great impetus during the present century with the rise of synthetic organic chemistry. One of the most vexing problems has always been to achieve specifici ty with the medications. While some medical agents do indeed possess a relatively high degree of specificity, most agents are far more systemic than would be desired. Much of the research efforts to correct this deficiency has centered on modifying the chemical agents themselves. Unfortunately, there are severe limitations in this approach since minor modifications often drastically affect the therapeutic activity and can even render the drug completely ineffective, or worse. 316 pp. Englisch.

If two judges each rank the same n items, statisticians have used various metrics to measure the closeness of the two rankings, including Ken dall's tau, Spearman's rho, Spearman's footrule, Ulam's metric, Hal1l11ing distance, and Cayley distance. These metrics have been em ployed in many contexts, in many applied statistical and scientific problems. Thi s monograph presents genera 1 methods for extendi ng these metri cs to partially ranked data. Here 'partially ranked data' refers, for instance, to the situation in which there are n distinct items, but each judge specifies only his first through k-th choices, where k n. More complex types of partially ranked data are also investigated. Group theory is an important tool for extending the metrics. Full rankings are identified with elements of the permutation group, whereas partial rankings are identified with points in a coset space of the permutation group. The problem thus becomes one of ex tending metrics on the permutation group to metrics on a coset space of the permutation group. To carry out the extens'ions, two novel methods -- the so-called Hausdorff and fixed vector methods -- are introduced and implemented, which exploit this group-theoretic structure. Various data-analytic applications of metrics on fully ranked data have been presented in the statistical literature. 232 pp. Englisch.
