The book is divided into sections dealing with the methods of investigation, the investigation of particular symptoms, the investigation of specific neurological conditions and neurological emergencies. Finally, the assessment of certain disorders suggesting a particular anatomical localization, for example isolated optic atro phy, is considered. Following an appraisal of the literature, each section ends with a recommendation regarding appropriate investigation. In some in stances this is supported by an algorithm. Specific recommendations have been attempted despite the risk of producing over-dogmatic criteria for patient management. A small amount of illustrative material is included. It will also be of value to those who are already trained in the safe handling and use of radionuclides for imaging, as a rapid reference for routine and non-routine nuclear medicine imaging procedures. The procedures described were largely developed or modified at the Nuclear Medicine Department, Guy's Hospital, London, with regular updates during the last 10 years. The main body of each chapter deals with the technical aspects of radionuclide imaging and each chapter contains a section on the prepara tion procedure for the relevant radiopharmaceuticals used with brief summaries of the aim of any data analyses using a computer system. Although the methods described do not represent the only way to carry out such procedures, they have all been evaluated extensively and are known to give satisfactory results. Seemingly contradictory results can often be explained by considering the details of the structure formed. It represents an effort to interrelate the deposition, properties, and applications of polysilicon so that it can be used most effectively to enhance device and integrated-circuit perfor mance. Due to a general inability to dif ferentiate between normal and neoplastic cells, little selectivity exists in currently used oncolytic drugs. Consequently, significant toxicity to the patient is expected when systemic cancer chemotherapy is chosen as an appropriate therapeutic in tervention. Much of this toxicity, such as damage to the bone marrow, gastroin testinal tract, or hair follicles, is predictable based upon the fact that anticancer drugs kill actively dividing cells. These types of toxicities, while serious, are usually manageable and reversible and are, therefore, not often considered to be dose limiting. Unfortunately, several of the most important anticancer drugs also damage tissues in which the growth fraction is relatively small. Such toxicities can not be predicted based on the chemical structure of the drugs, are often not detected in preclinical studies, and are encountered frequently for the first time in clinical studies. Further, unlike most of the proliferative-dependent toxicities, the unpre dicted toxicities are usually irreversible or only partially reversible upon cessation of drug administration. Because of this, the unpredicted toxicities are referred to as dose limiting. Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - My interest in X-Efficiency (XE) dates back to 1978. At the time, I was writing the dissertation for my Ph. D. at Washington State University. My dissertation was concerned with the role of attitudes in the school-to-work transition among young men. I was advised by Professor Millard Hastay (a member of my committee) to look at Leibenstein's 'new' book, Beyond Economic Man. One of the things that caught my attention was his be havioral description of (selective) rationality. It seemed that Leibenstein's behavioral description of a (selectively) rational individual was very similar to what psychologists such as Abraham Maslow were reporting as being the product of a particular motivational system. In other words, I was im pressed with the idea that what Leibenstein was referring to as X-ineffi ciency was being discussed by psychologists as 'the way it (often) is. ' So from the beginning I always considered the concept of X-(in)efficiency to be a valuable one for understanding human behavior. I have since come to believe that this is particularly true when considering behavior in non market environments, i. e. , within the firm. Work on this book, however, can most realistically said to have started with work which I began in 1982 while I was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University. Professor Leibenstein suggested that I consider how some em pirical evidence which was being cited as evidence for the role of property rights might also be consistent with XE theory.

Neuware - Antiviral chemotherapy has come of age, and, after an initial slow pro gress, the development of new antiviral agents has proceeded at a more rapid pace and the perspectives for their clinical use have increased considerably. Now, 25 years after the first antiviral assay (idoxuridine) was introduced in the clinic, it is fitting to commemorate the beginning of the antivirals' era. In its introductory chapter B.E. Juel-Jensen touches on what may be con sidered as five of the most fundamental requirements of an antiviral drug : efficacy, relative non-toxicity, easy solubility, ready availability and rea sonable cost. Surely, the antiviral drugs that have so far been used in the clinic could still be improved upon as one or more of these five essential demands are concerned. How is all began is narrated by W.H. Prusoff. The first antiviral drugs to be used in humans were methisazone and idoxuridine, the former, which is now of archival interest, in the prevention of smallpox, the latter, which was approved for clinical use in the United States in 1962, for the topical treatment of herpetic keratitis. In terms of potency, also because of solubility reasons, idoxuridine has been superseded by trifluridine in the topical treatment of herpes simplex epithelial keratitis. H.E. Kaufman did not find trifluridine or acyclovir ef fective in the treatment of deep stromal keratitis or iritis and he reckons that other antiviral drugs (i.e. bromovinyldeoxyuridine) would not be effec tive either.

' The decision by the Translator and Editors to render the title of the first segment of this volume, Mysclzlenie i Rech', as Thinking and Speech and not as Thought and Language, as it was previously translated, was a very intentional one.

More than any other nursing speciality Accident and Emergency work reflects change in society because it is the casualties of social upheaval, imbalance and inequality that you face every day. Here, unfortunately, A and E staff are confronted on a regular basis with child abuse, family violence, the result of terrorist activities, social violence, motor car accidents, personal loss of loved ones, the frustrations and aggression of life. Sometimes, though, some pleasant and funny episodes do occur but all too infrequently to become the norm. My own experience of A and E nursing is very limited; in fact, it goes back to the days of the Department being linked with Orthopaedics and being called 'Casualty' . It could, though, appear that in this day and age the wheel is tuming full circle and moves have been made in the last reorganization to link the two new distinct specialities again. This proposal was met with lots of protest from A and E staff which appears to have been defused.
