These contain the paper…s presented at the Conference on Chemical Bonds held in Minsk between May 28 and June 3, 1967, together with a few other papers (denoted by an asterisk) which have been specially incorporated. Earlier collections (also published by the Nauka i Tekhnika Press of the Belorussian Academy of Sciences) were entitled 'Chemical Bonds in Semiconductors and Solids' (1965) and 'Chemical Bonds in Semiconductors and Thermody namics' (1966) and are available in English editions from Consultants Bureau, New York (pub lished in 1967 and 1968, respectively). The subject of chemical bonds in crystals, including semiconductors, has recently become highly topical and has attracted the interest of a wide circle of physicists, chemists, and engineers. Until recently, the most successful description of the properties of solids (including semi conductors) has been provided by the band theory, which still dominates the physics of solids. It has been our aim in preparing this book to provide a comprehen sive account of the widely spread applications o…f nitrogen NMR. The relevant literature has been surveyed from the beginnings of NMR until early 1972. The steady annual growth in the number of references cited since 1965 is ample evidence of the ever increasing importance of the subject. Sufficient theoretical and experimental background is given for an understanding of the applications dealt with in later chapters. The basic principles of NMR are developed with a theoretical approach to chemical shifts and spin-spin coupling constants, particular emphasis being given to nitrogen nuclei. Following this the experimental aspects of nitrogen NMR are adequately described. Special emphasis is given to the observable effects of the nuclear quadrupole moment of the 14 N nucleus. It is appro priate that this topic be dealt with in depth since quadrupolar interactions frequently dominate the information available from a study of the 14 N nucleus and other nuclei spin coupled to it. The applications of nitrogen chemical shift data to organic and inorganic molecules are covered in two extensive chapters which include the effects of paramagnetism on nitrogen NMR. 416 pp. Englisch.

The multifactorial nature of the problem requires an interdisciplinary approach which has always been a feature of… this series of International Symposia which started in Leeds in 1968 and has progressed at four-yearly intervals through Madrid, Davos and Williamsburg. The latest Meeting, at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in April 1984, involved 302 participants from all five continents. The major emphasis of the Meeting was to blend the basic and clinical research on urolithiasis. Comprehensive reviews of the major areas of current research were presented by invited speakers, all internationally recognized experts in their fields. From more than 250 submitted abstracts, 18 were selected for oral presentation and the remainder presented at three afternoon poster sessions which provided an opportunity for informal and more lengthy discussions of the work on display. The Meeting also included three ad hoc Evening Discussions on how to approach various unsolved questions in the clinical and laboratory evaluation of stone patients and four Round Table Discussions involving specialists in the field who debated the theoretical aspects of stone formation in the urinary tract, the measurement of inhibitory activity of urine, the treatment of idiopathic stones with drugs, and the nature and treatment of stones arising from urinary tract infection. 1028 pp. Englisch.

The scope of the Conference was largely confined to basic pro blems in the general area of optical coherence and quantum optics, and excluded engineering applications that are well covered by other meetings. Approximately 250 scientists from 9 countries participated, most of whom are active workers in the field. Alto gether 72 papers, including 26 invited papers, were presented in 17 sessions. The seed for this symposium arose from a group of physiologists, soil scientists and biochemists… that met in Leningrad, USSR in July 1975 at the 12th Botanical Conference in a Session organized by Professor B. B - Vartepetian. This group and others later conspired to contribute to a book entitled Plant Life in Anaerobic Environments (eds. D.D. Hook and R.M.M. Crawford, Ann Arbor Science, 1978). Several contributors to the book suggested in 1983 that a broad-scoped symposium on wetlands would be useful (a) in facilitating communication among the diverse research groups involved in wetlands research (b) in bringing researchers and managers together and (c) in presenting a com-: prehensive and balanced coverage on the status of ecology and management of wetlands from a global perspective. With this encouragement, the senior editor organized a Plan ning Committee that encompassed expertise from many disciplines of wetland scientists and managers.
