The development of this powerful microanalytical technique from the origins offield ion microscopy in 1951, through the first three-dimensional atom probe prototype built in 1986 to today's commercial state-of-the-art three dimensional atom probe is documented in chapter 1. A general introduction to atom probe tomography is also presented in chapter 1. The various methods to fabricate suitable needle-shaped specimens are presented in chapter 2. The European Union's Information Technologies Programme 'Esprit' did there fore launch a 'Pilot action for Low Power Design' , wh ich eventually grew to 19 R&D projects and one coordination project, with an overall budget of 14 million Euro. It is meanwhile known as European Low Power Initiative for Electronic System Design (ESD-LPD) and will be completed by the end of 2001. The exposition is based on finite-dimensional representations of the homogeneous Lorentz group, and the subsequent introduction of gauge transformations, of the Abelian and non Abelian varieties. Reference to classical mechanics is avoided. Acting on the simple basis spinors and vectors, Lorentz transfonnations generate wave and field functions. Equations are obtained by the relativistic generalization of the addition of angular momenta, the wave or field functions being the solutions. For zero mass the equations may be obtained as the limits of the equations for the massive cases or by the application of the Euclidian group in two dimensions. The latter approach is illuminating in that it uncovers a loss in generality resulting from the former. Identifying momenta as eigenvalues of translations demonstrates covariance under the inhomogeneous Lorentz or Poincare group. Neuware -Over the past several decades the seeming escalation of crimes involving sexually deviant, coercive, and aggressive behavior has become an increasingly serious problem, manifested in costs to both victims and society at large. The long-term p…sychological impact of sexual assault on adult and child victims has been documented numerous times. The costs incurred by society include a network of medical and psychological services provided to aid victim recovery, the investigation, trial, and incarceration of offenders-often in segregated units or special facilities-and the invisible but tangible blanket of fear that forces potential victims to schedule normal daily activities around issues of safety. Despite the gravity of the problem, there has been a paucity of empirical research directed at the etiology, course, remediation, and management of sexually deviant and coercive behavior. In treating these disorders and in making crucial decisions about how to manage these offenders, clinicians have been forced to rely on their personal experience. Such experience by its nature is unsystematic and lacks the validation that empirical research provides. The lack of sound empirical data addressing the problem is certainly noteworthy, though not surprising. The paucity of research in this area may well be attributable to historical scientific timidity about most aspects of sexual behavior. The exposition is based on finite-dimensional representations of the homogeneous Lorentz group, and the subsequent introduction of gauge transformations, of the Abelian and non Abelian varieties. Reference to classical mechanics is avoided. Acting on the simple basis spinors and vectors, Lorentz transfonnations generate wave and field functions. Equations are obtained by the relativistic generalization of the addition of angular momenta, the wave or field functions being the solutions. For zero mass the equations may be obtained as the limits of the equations for the massive cases or by the application of the Euclidian group in two dimensions. The latter approach is illuminating in that it uncovers a loss in generality resulting from the former. Identifying momenta as eigenvalues of translations demonstrates covariance under the inhomogeneous Lorentz or Poincare group. The long-te…rm psychological impact of sexual assault on adult and child victims has been documented numerous times. The costs incurred by society include a network of medical and psychological services provided to aid victim recovery, the investigation, trial, and incarceration of offenders-often in segregated units or special facilities-and the invisible but tangible blanket of fear that forces potential victims to schedule normal daily activities around issues of safety. Despite the gravity of the problem, there has been a paucity of empirical research directed at the etiology, course, remediation, and management of sexually deviant and coercive behavior. In treating these disorders and in making crucial decisions about how to manage these offenders, clinicians have been forced to rely on their personal experience. Such experience by its nature is unsystematic and lacks the validation that empirical research provides. The lack of sound empirical data addressing the problem is certainly noteworthy, though not surprising.
